no your comment is in line with what i said, the car only folks (or a small subsection of them) can't comprehend the dynamics at play without centering themselves and the other drivers in the discussion
Hence my argument that as a cyclist you’re a fucking moron for exposing yourself to the risk of trusting motorists To be clear, ideally this should not be the case, but in reality it is
I think your post is well-intentioned, but I think this kind of stuff is a bit misleading regarding the reality of cycling infrastructure. I don't know what goes into that 350+ miles number, but it's evident there's limited segregated cycling infrastructure and that much of it isn't connected. The Little Miami trail does seem like a nice option though, if people are able to make it to it.
The little miami trail is just part of that this is the full trails. https://www.miamivalleytrails.org/trail-map And my issue is more with the cyclists out where I live in the rural parts of southwest Ohio not really the inner city itself. I live close to halfway between Columbus and Cinci and pretty much everywhere around here you live about 5-10 minutes from an entry point to that Little Miami trail which connects to all those on that map.
the vast majority of people wont hit someone they see riding a bike even if they're super annoyed or angry. They're much more likely to hit someone they don't see. That's the long and short of a lot of things you see from cyclists, including the stupid outfits. It becomes apparent rather quickly you have to assert yourself at least somewhat when being passed by hurdling cars. Interpretation of what it means to 'take the lane' between people is as different as people are. My move was always a quick look in the peripheral while drifting away from the bike lane after getting passed. I've been lucky to live in cities with at least bike lanes. Sound is huge and you can tell a lot about someone from the sound of their engine. I've never slowed anyone up except for at stop signs, but I made sure everyone who could kill me knew about my presence.
Everyone is talking about speed, I couldn’t care less about how fast I go on a ride. Slowing down to 10-20 miles an hour for 5 minutes on a 15 minute ride isnt shit in the grand scheme of things. What I’m worried about people that are reckless, stupid, don’t see you, or overcorrect in reaction to other stimuli resulting in the death of a cyclist. Naturally in cities with dedicated bike lanes and intermittent barriers between bike lanes and normal lanes this isn’t really an issue, but I’ve been driving many a time where I saw someone cycling on a road that I considered irresponsible from a risk standpoint. Usually these are two lane roads, curvy, and don’t even have a curb or are heavily trafficked by cars going over 40 mph.
You guys must interact with a different breed of cyclists than I do. Most people riding bikes around here are just trying to get somewhere, not trying fo shave 3 minutes off of their tour de france time.
I love cycling and running. It’s fucked up that idiots who can’t share the road keep me from doing those things because they make the streets almost completely unsafe.
I would occasionally bike to work in Montana and would routinely have to take extra safety precautions because drivers are idiots. I was nearly ran over by a truck when I had the audacity to cross an intersection when the green pedestrian walk signal was on. I took sidewalks and neighborhood roads whenever possible and still would almost get ran over. Not to mention when I did organized rides in high school on Kansas rural roads (re: little to no shoulder) and cars would pass by doing 60 at an arms length away when they had ample space and time to honk then swerve around. Sometimes you don’t hear the car coming until a half second before it drives by you. A lot of drivers have a complete hateboner for people on bikes (as evidenced by this thread). I’m not sure if it’s from a place of ignorance or ego.
This is dumb. Risking a 4 point ticket and a $240 fine, not to mention potential increase in insurance, all to save .5 seconds. Is most certainly not a dick move.
I move over as much as I can for cyclists, and I don't trip too hard when I'm stuck behind one going 20 mph. BUT, I see so many of them just blow through red lights and stop signs, rules for me and not for thee I guess.
Was on my way to my first job today. In a 20 mph school zone. There is a parent crossing the street in the crosswalk after dropping kid off. Car in lane next to me going about 35, starts laying on horn 200’ away, never saw it slow down any or its brake lights are out, misses pedestrian by about 1’. Yes, cyclists are clearly the issue making the roads dangerous.
Again, unless you come to a complete stop at a stop sign for like a full second then you're breaking the rules. I'm sure you've also never ran a red light because you got caught too far behind when it was yellow and you didn't want to wait another cycle.
We have very different definitions of bike paths. Around here, bike paths are separated from the shoulder of the road by 20-30 feet. They are 8-12” wide, and have stop signs at each roadway crossing. They are paved with asphalt so no joints. They are crowned so no need for drainage in the middle. Bike lanes are the things within/directly next to the roadways.
That sounds magical. And pretty much non-existent in Dallas. There is somewhat of a trail system in Dallas but it is generally clogged with runners, people with dogs that may or may not be on a leash, and moms with strollers 2-3 abreast. Also ubiquitous is the entire family on wheels, including little red wagons and tricycles.
That's guys a dick and needs a large fine for driving that way. That doesn't change the fact you're a dick when you ride your bike in the middle of the lane, not giving a single fuck who you inconvenience. His wrong doesn't excuse yours. "But what about!?!?!?!"
It is, so I ride a different place I am legally allowed to ride, the street. I don’t try to make other people stop doing things they are legally allowed to do.
He is a dick and can get a ticket but I am just a dick because I can not get a ticket for doing something legal. I hope it is a beautiful weekend and the cyclists are out if full force in Florida this weekend.
Debatable as what's "reasonable" for you to leave the bike lane is up for discussion. Joyriding in the middle of the lane just bc you want to is illegal. Me too! Hope they stay in their lane and enjoy their day.
And you also don't try to justify people mowing them down just for being in a place they're allowed to be.
I just can't fathom having a "Fuck you, I'm doing what I want and don't give a fuck how many people I inconvenience. Fuck you, deal with it! And you better be nice to me while I do it!!!" attitude about anything in life, legal or not. The entitlement is astonishing. Peak privilege.
Just because your development spent some money in paint and signs, that does not mean you have an actual bike lane. There are standards for such, and that is not my opinion. 3.06’ wide does not meet any such minimum established standard. And the minimum requirement increases as the speed of the road increases. You do not have an actual bike lane. I am sorry your “convenience” means more to you than the health and safety of those around you and in your community. Are you anti-vax by chance? Who is actually being the dick here? Is it the guy advocating for safe cycling or is it the guy who said basically “cyclists shouldn’t be standing there” and has no regard for the health and safety of their fellow citizens?
You can come up with whatever reasoning you want and try to justify it but it does change my post. And lol at asking about vax in an attempt to deflect. That's hilarious.
You’re doing too much. There are suggestions/ rules/ laws in some places pushing for a 3 foot cushion for cyclists on roads (with no bike lanes) for cars. Having a bike lane for us is wonderful. 3 feet is plenty in my opinion and would hug the gutter and say thank you. DBL hyperbole aside, use the bike lane assholes.
a 3’ cushion is different than what is being described here. There is no cushion. There is a 3’ “bike lane” adjacent to a normal lane. Dividid by a 6” stripe. If there was a 3’ cushion between the normal lane and the 3’ bike lane, I would no have issue with what dbl is saying and would say yeah, you have some jerks in your neighborhood, t’s & p’s. But as is, cars will and do pass witthout moving over any. Because they are uneducated about cycling and look at cyclists as a menace.
Yes, the people begging you not to take your own life ransom for “muh freedoms” are like the anti vaxxers, not the people saying “fuck you im allowed to, and you can’t stop me.”
Is this another “quote me, say why did you respond to me, and then say you will not respond to me anymore” thing? Because by your own word, you were done talking to me about it. Do you have a problem keeping your word on all things or just this topic. Just trying to get an idea of the reliability of the person I am talking with.
