Pamela's for breakfast. A little touristy but legit good. Do the Strip District one. Buy a knock off Stillers t from a street vendor. Head up to Troy Hill and hit Scratch & Co. Owner is a really cool dude trying the whole concept of paying people real salaries and actually supporting the farms from the region. Also all the Carnegie Museums are really great. Mineo's pizza in Squirrel Hill is just non-stop cheese that needs to congeal to be eaten but worth it.
Pittsburgh steak salads with some nice crispy fries on them are delicious. Please respect my decision.
Going to check this place out -- really close to my parents' house. Thanks for the tip. and Mineo's is an institution. Pizza in general is pretty good in Pgh. You realize this when you live in a city like DC for a while and then go back.
Related story: I have a buddy who grew up in Moon and refuses to use any ketchup that isn’t Heinz. Keeps a bottle in his vehicle for emergency purposes.
One of my favorite restaurants in the country is in Pittsburgh, The Butcher and the Rye, downtown near the Renaissance hotel. Unfortunately I just looked it up online and it’s temporarily closed.
Yeah the Scratch spot used to be a bar/restaurant next to where my grandma worked so she ate there all the time. Now my sister is the event manager for the restaurant that took over. Hoping to get up there soon and get my hands on that dry aged burger.
Pittsburgh is a cool city. PNC Park is a top five ballpark. Eat some pierogis and have a beer at the local elk lodge.
Carnegie is an excellent museum, especially for a city outside of NY/LA/Chicago. The permanent collection has works by Monet, Van Gogh, Giacometti’s walking man, and a lot of great stuff from the post-WWII abstract era.
Fiori’s>>>>>>> Mineos (truth is they are very similar. Fioris sauce is sweeter that’s the only real difference. Long time rumor was that when fiori left mineos and took the sauce recipe he wrote down sugar instead of salt and so the sauce is sweeter… might be BS). you can’t go wrong with fioris or mineos though. Fioris is easier to get to if you’re downtown and mineos is easier if you are East of the city. Fioris is take out only I think still because of covid, so beware of that.
I mean, if someone wanted to use a time machine and drink beer and eat pizza in 1972 in Millvale they could have eaten Amato's, at least, since it's been around since the 1950's. Not some johnny-come-lately place, no sir.
All nepotism aside, the beers are pretty fantastic and it’s a really great spot. There’s a cool vinyl shop down the street. There’s also an ax throwing place down that way if I recall.
I like ordering a quarter pounder with cheese and a small fry and making my own homemade primanti bros sandwich
Sorry I was in a hurry when I posted my recipe. Yes I normally stop by chick fil a for that final ingredient
No idea. I don’t think it’s great as it is but if you take home in a box the cheese melts on the ride and it’s better
went to Pittsburgh for the first time about a month ago, only had a day and a half there though. Really enjoyed downtown, Gaucho is great, had some of the best cocktails of my life at Con Alma with some live jazz. Drank some PA beers at spots around town. Would return.
I was going to point out that Di Carlos in Steubenville is the original, but figured I couldn’t hold up to the withering series of rape jokes that would follow.
It’s basically a crisp focaccia style crust, with the sauce baked on it to prevent it from drying in the oven. As soon as it comes out, the cheese goes on it and begins to melt. You always should eat it hot, and it’s delicious.
Di Carlo's is fantastic. Gotta eat it in the car because the location I go to is takeout only. Double cheese double pepperoni.
We should probably just give Taques a list of things to do in Steubenville/Weirton and send him there.
