So far most of his benefits have come from Affirmative Action. Plus, he’s really a self hater early on and despises women. So many red flags. Edit: I literally just guffawed at his black nationalism
Hello. I listen to about 65-70 hours of podcasts every week and I’ve burned through the backlog of a lot of my favorites. Struggling to find something new so figured I’d ask for help. I like history, hip hop, TV, nerd culture, CFB, MLB, true crime and music in general. Currently subscribed to Timesuck, Fall of Civilizations, Generation Why, Last Podcast on The Left, Ruined!, Talkin’ Baseball, Around The NFL, True Crime Garage, Revolutions, The Ringerverse, Binge Mode, X Ray Vision, Dissect, No Skips, Trial By Content, and a few other Ringer pods along with team specific podcasts I won’t bore you with. Thanks!
Do you listen to the Jared Carrabis pod? Baseball is Dead. It's very similar to Talkin Baseball. They're pretty funny. I posted a few true crime pods in this thread recently. Queen of the Con was a really good con woman pod. Mr.Ballen is a good one if you like your true crime in story format (I didn't think I would, but I do fwiw). I'd suggest starting with "Don't Get in the Water" or "Open Water" Piketon Massacre 3 seasons of deep dive into an ongoing case that left 8 family members dead. Didn't know shit about it going into it, and loved it. I skipped some of the filler episodes, because you can tell they are starting to run out of material at times when there is no new info in the case. You'll know them when you hear them. Murder Sheet about the Delphi murders (It's next on my to listen list, but caveat is that I haven't heard it.) Trojan Horse Affair is apparently podcast of the year according to my wife. Firebug was a fun true crime listen. One Strange Thing has some solid episodes. The first one was really good, so that's a good place to start. This is Actually Happening if you want to suffer from crippling depression.
What’s up with Bomani? Revolutions and Analyze Phish are the two best pods ever created if y’all never worked your way through those.
Lions Led by Donkeys is somewhere between A- and A+ whenever "Liam" isn't involved. "Nick" is #1-5. I'm pretty sure "Nick" is currently enlisted as a cook somewhere, I think they mentioned South Korea. Francis is #6. Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary have a podcast called Video Archives fwiw
the russian revolution one was awesome. taking 50 episodes to get to 1917 is probably going to be a no for most people though
That’s exactly where I’m at. About ep 48. After: British American Three French Spanish American Haitian Mexican It’s about time he goes into some detail.
The "he didn't believe in interracial marriage until he wanted to marry a white woman" part is pretty funny. The part about his sister towards the end of part 2 is pretty infuriating.
pretty much his adult growth can be summarized as "the only moral and ideology he didn't abandon in pursuit of money and power is to always shit on women and people beneath you".
I appreciated the detail and context though. So many of the seeds planted pre-1905 came to fruition in the February and October revolutions. I had a good understanding of 1917 onwards, but I only knew the major beats of 1917, but the context of just how truly inept the Tzar was was really interesting. Plus all the left factionalism is much better understood when you trace there evolution through these periods before hand. I came away from the series with a much understanding than I had before. But my favorite series by far was the Haitian Revolution. Something I knew next to nothing about aside from a vague idea of that a Haitian named Toussaint L’Ouverture existed. Just something that needs to be appreciated by the world at large and it was no accident why Haiti became what it is today. Being robbed blind for nearly a hundred years as a penalty for having the gall to want to be free and rule themselves.
I love the detail of the longer seasons, but I feel like I have better comprehension of the shorter ones. After a while it's hard to keep up with the super long Russian Revolution season. Like Im missing the forest through the trees. Id almost rather just read a book on the topic. Speaking of - he's pitching his Lafayette book as a show. If that gets made in the same style as Turn, that would be awesome.
i think my favorite part was when they marched the czar and his family into the basement to be shot, and on the way down there was pornographic graffiti on the wall that involved the czarina . i had never heard that before
All the stuff about French banks lending the Haitians money at like 10000% interest to pay their French debts. Oh, now I get it.
I did listen to the 1905 and earlier episodes 2x times during his hiatus period. That also might be why I appreciated it more. And at some point I’ll listen to it all in one go again. I have done this a few times with his other series. Sad it is ending, maybe one day he will take a crack at some of the other major 20th century revolutions. But you have to change it up eventually and as it is a one man show I am sure he wants to branch out in some way, I saw the Lafayette table read thing pop up but haven’t listened to it yet. Plan on getting to it today. I’d watch the hell out of that show.
The 9/11 Knowledge Fight episodes are great Alex being convinced within like an hour of the event that all of Europe has started a war on the U.S. is hilarious
i liked rogan seeming reasonable and then being like "well i think the government killed kennedy" also jones just leading off the show with "i told you so!" when he assumed that tens of thousands of people had been killed is a pretty good look into who he is as a person
I tried to listen to Knowledge Fight starting with the 9/11 episode. The hosts came off like a cheesy zoo crew morning show. Plus I just don't care about a podcast dedicated to making fun of Alex Jones. I know he's terrible and he's so ridiculous he's parody imo.
I don't know what I was expecting either. I actually didn't realize it was an Alex Jones commentary going in. But that clip is a perfect example of why it doesn't work for me. Alex Jones IS the parody. I guess I was looking for a Behind The Bastards type podcast that peels back the layers on different topics/people in an entertaining way that's different from how they're presented in a cookie cutter history class.
I like the episodes about his older shows a lot more. Lol he just called Michael Savage an ultra far left liberal
He is the parody but he’s a lot more of a dangerous piece of shit since trump. His thoughts are often fairly mainstream rwnj at this point.
I listened to a lot of episodes of that one on a long road trip. Afterwards I called both of my parents and thanked them for not being pieces of shit while raising me. I felt like 90% of the stories either directly or indirectly stemmed from some sort of fucked up upbringing. Either the parents were physically or psychologically abusive, or they were just neglectful and as a result the child grew up seeking attention to a degree that was unhealthy and put them in a bad position.
99% of this shit doesn't get to me, but the first story on this one was a punch in the balls. I haven't been able to start the 2nd story yet. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-51-vacations-from-hell/id1608813794?i=1000575007550
I did from basically their inception and was a huge fan. Stopped listening when they did the Vince trial episodes. Life got in the way and stopped having the time to listen. Coincided with me stopping watching wrestling too.
I just listened to this as my first episode, then HH Holmes. Is that kind of the idea of the whole series?
It's mostly true crime, but it varies... Not all true crime, but usually not the most positive conclusion, although there are some (at least on his YouTube) that end well. The one I posted today was by far the one I was most disturbed by, I still haven't listened to the second story from that episode because I'm still shook. My favorite 2 of that show are "Don't Get in the Water" and "Open Water" in that order. Don't Get in the Water https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-39-dont-get-in-the-water/id1608813794?i=1000567497698 Open Water https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-43-open-water/id1608813794?i=1000569146311
It has only gotten better. The good thing about TLF is that the shows are mostly timeless so you can come back whenever. If you have ever enjoyed the show then you should come back to at least sample the WBF episodes, Scott Hall tribute, and the deepest of dives into Bash at the Beach 2000.
Oh I have listened to their entire catalog up until I stopped listening about 3-4 times before then. I’ll probably jump back in soon but can’t find them on Stitcher.
The Viktor Bout episode of The Sit Down podcast is pretty good. uhh apparently he was willing to sell surface-to-air missiles to FARC for the explicit purpose of shooting down U.S. DEA helicopters Apparently he is a loose basis for the Nic Cage guy from Lord of War, but irl he is way less cool. His money seems to be from a legitimate international air shipping company
I mean he is an arms dealer, 100%. But the story isn't as good as one might expect. I only mention it because his name has been floated as an exchange for Brittney Griner
Enjoying Mr Ballen, but the weird mean things he says to do to the 5* review button bug me a little. Is it an inside joke?
Cocaine and rhinestones.probably already mentioned. David Allan Coe's kid. Seemingly pretty deep dive into the history, machinery, and tales of early country music. The first few episodes, his delivery is forced and awkward. He's supremely a dork. He gets more comfortable and it smooths out. Any interest or not doesn't matter. Great, great show
