Planning a Portland trip to get some hiking in. Where would be a good place to get a cabin from airbnb that's within 1-1.5 hours? I assume portland would be too urban?
Not really, Portland sits within 30-45 minutes of some of the best hiking in the country in the Columbia River Gorge. If you're set on a cabin anyplace around Mt. Hood would be nice. It really depends on what kind of hikes you want to take. Waterfalls?, elevation gain, views, plants and animals, etc.?
also check around the town of hood river. awesome little town with fantastic beer. hour away from portland and you can jump over the bridge and go up the white salmon for rafting and mt adams is right there
Thanks, fellas. I think oneorta gorge from page 1 is a must see, but I'm still researching other spots. I'll focus on mount hood and hood river for cabins.
I call it as cool of a town under 10,000 people in the entire country. Good food, great beer, fun bars, wineries, next to fruit loop, and unlimited outdoor activities. Also heard their golf course is great. Really an ideal town for the outdoors.
Anyone know of a good realtor/property management company in the Portland area that can help me find a rental?
Oneonta is incredible when the weather is 100* plus - because the only way to get there is to wade upstream in hip-deep ice cold water! Dog Mountain is excellent right now because the wildflowers are still in bloom - the whole top of the mountain is utterly covered with wildflowers, with pretty amazing views up and down the river. Shady hike, good for hot weather until you get up top, but the wind ALWAYS blows up there so the evaporative effect offsets the blazing heat. Wear sunscreen!
idgaf about the culture part any more. I want to ride my dirt bike, ride my snowmobile, ski, raft, hike.
we are actually trying to find a new rental place here now. its been a pain in the fucking ass but its also because i have two 50+ dogs. keep refreshing CL and get the email notifications for truila and zillow. if you dont call within the first 30 minutes of them being listed youll be 5 deep in line for a place. we got approved through grid property management but ended up not taking the place because it was to expensive but theyve been easy to work with
I'm in an almost identical boat. Have two 50+ lbs dogs. My wife and I are moving back from Phoenix and didn't realize how crazy the market was. I'm driving up on Saturday/Sunday, and we still don't have a place locked down. I'm getting really nervous.
for $500/day, you can stay in my place. i live in the Pearl. i'll stay with a brother or my parents or something. 1000 sq ft condo. if anyone asks, just tell my neighbors you're dog sitting and that your dogs weigh <70 pounds combined. also, i only have one parking spot.
Gents - Still working my way through the thread, but wanted to go ahead and post in case anybody has any recs specific to my trip. Have a wedding in South Oregon on Saturday, so I decided to fly in tomorrow night and hang in Portland for a few days before renting a car and driving down Saturday morning. My folks' friends are letting me stay at their condo in the Pearl District. Will likely be working until around 5 or so Wednesday and Thursday. Not planning to rent a car until I have to drive to the wedding. Would appreciate suggestions for things to do in/walking distance/reasonable uber distance/public transport accessible from the Pearl District. Anything exercise/eating/drinking/girl chasing/sight seeing related would be awesome. Planning to tour Nike's campus Friday afternoon and maybe dinner with a friend of my parents' Friday night. Will buy a beer (or Casa Diablo lap dance (assuming it's significantly less than the $260 on one of the google reviews)) if any Portland TMBers want to meet up. Gracias in advance.
1. I don't care what anyone says, get ice cream and salt and straw. 2. What part of southern Oregon? I can help you out if you need any recommendations down there.
Andina is incredible and super walkable from your spot. Everything is uber-able. Portland is pretty small.
BRomanceTaylor here's the Salt and Straw secret: skip the line (which will undoubtedly be 30+ people)... go inside, buy a pint, and they'll even give you cones.
Looks like I'll be getting down on some ice cream. Thanks guys. Wedding is in Medford. Will pretty much get to town an hour or so before the wedding and then drive back to Portland the next morning. Not in any super hurry to get back (flight Sunday night) so if there are cool things to see on the drive back, that'd be appreciated.
Drive over to the coast and come up highway 101. You will spend all day stopping to take pictures on the way home, bar non the most beautiful highway in America. Go just a bit North of Canon Beach and take highway 26 back to Portland.
$260 is "the Golden Ticket" meaning an hour of full contact private lap dance with the performer of your choosing, where the lovely young lady will inform you that "you can touch anything except for my koo-kah". One of my young employees emerged once from the curtain, wild-eyed and smiling, my rep having bought the kid a lap dance. We were all outside gathered around him to ask the young man from Wisconsin how his first lap dance was and he lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper and said "she put her finger in her pussy and then she stuck it in my mouth!!" We all scattered as if he had announced he enjoys snacking on poop from time to time. It was heartbreaking to explain to him that being given the dancer's Twitter handle on a business card (no phone number) was not an invitation to connect socially,
Wife and I are heading to a wedding in Cannon Beach in August. We're staying in Seaside and have a free day to do whatever the fuck we want. Any suggestions?
keep in mind Medford to Portland is a trek by itself you add in a coast jaunt and you're adding multiple hours to said trip I'd almost think of spending a night on the coast on the way back if you wanted to go that route
You're close to medford, you can hop up the road to Crater Lake National Park. The drive back can go a number of ways. Highway 138 is gorgeous. From there you can go up I5 or head over to the coast and do what Lefthook said. Otherwise you can stop at Crater Lake and then get back highway 97 and head up into Bend for some good beers and the best view of the Cascades along the drive. Plenty of snow on top of them yet so they look gorgeous from a distance. So many things to do along either route.
I second what Oz says regarding Crater lake. It's the crown jewel of southern Oregon. If you have time to eat in Ashland which is about 15 minutes south of Medford, there is some fantastic restaurants (that are affordable). Larks has the best fried chicken I've ever had (beats anything I've had in the south) and Sammich is amazing too. If you don't have time to do any of that, there is a trailer in Rice Hill (I think exit 150?) I have been going to for 20 years that's an awesome hole in the wall drive in. They now have a dispensary right across the 5 too, if you're into that kind of thing.
Gotdamn portland housing prices are brutal. It's like double what Dallas is without appearing to come close to our wages (at least in my field).
everyone I know who has got jobs there this summer is just annoyed, most aren't even attempting to buy, going to rent and hope the prices/demand come back to earth over the next few years couple people buying say any half-way decent house gets 3-5 offers within 24-48 hours over list price
That's the way dallas us for us when we sold/bought last year. I was just surprised to see such a big spread in cost of labor vs cost of living, but maybe that's just how it is out there. Still want to live there, be broke, and raise a chicken.
first piece of advice, don't stay in Seaside lol Seaside is a poor man's Coney Island. It's a shitty tourist trap and the whole town is more or less carnies who have settled down. Stay in Canon Beach, go to Ecola State Park, watch the surfers and go down and see Haystack Rock from The Goonies:
My only thing is that Crater Lake is a full-day experience. Not something you swing by and check out on a drive up to Portland. It's a massive park and takes half a day to travel around and check out the sites.
My kids love Seaside so I tolerate it, I prefer Long Beach in WA due to its proximity to Astoria & duc15 and it has 1/3 the tourists
I'm jaded because my fam owns a condo at Inn at Spanish Head in LC. Walk right out of the hotel onto the beach with my dog and there's few people out on the beach at any given time. When we leave the condo to go do shit, it's usually to go for a hike or something. I also hate Newport with the fury of 1000 suns. The only town on the Oregon Coast I despise more than Seaside.
When we take a day trip to the beach, we avoid LC like the plague and hit up the beach just south of the Devil's Punchbowl and a little north of Beverly Beach...the one with the stairs. My fave
Devils Punchbowl is dope really want to hit Crater Lake but finding somewhere to stay around there is impossible and it's a long ass drive from Corvallis
Have to connect in Seattle to get to Portland on Alaska Air. Bought two scotches, flight attendant accidentally spills a cup of coffee on me and freaks out with apologies. I tell him no big deal, he reimburses me my 2 scotches and slips me two more mini bottles. I also got on the flight with a few mini bottles of my own. Going to show up in your fair city three sheets. Have a female co-worker taking the ride from Medford to Portland with me on Sunday, so the spending the night idea and pushing the flight back are unfortunately out the window. Even though (from my limited research) I agree that Crater Lake is more than a quick stop, I think we're going to try to swing an hour or so there depending on when we get out of Medford. The further I dig into Oregon and looking at pictures, the more I wonder what the fuck I'm doing getting roasted in Texas weather. Haven't touched down in the state and already thinking about how fun it would be to road trip the state with a girlfriend or SO and I'm single haha. Partner in my firm is huge on Cannon Beach. Wants me to check it out Thursday, so if he's able to deflect work away from me, I think I may rent a car for Thursday and go spend a few hours out that way. So pumped to hit town. What's a good place to shop if I want a Blazers shirt or hat? Will that kind of stuff be everywhere? (I'm really hoping to find a LaMarcus jersey at a thrift shop or something, but I hate the Spurs FWIW).

I don't disagree, but even stopping by for an hour or two is worth it IMO. I think we found a house (t's and p's appreciated). We're gonna end up paying $2300 for a house in the suburbs that's similar to our house in Phoenix that we pay $950 for. If I would have researched the housing market more, I probably would have taken the job in southern Oregon instead of Portland.
Cannon Beach is pretty cool, I imagine that if I was from Texas it would be mind blowing. Crater lake is just mind blowing to everyone who visits and if you are in the area it's a must see.
