FWIW being irrational and prone to conspiracy theories doesn't have a lot to do with general intelligence. Someone can be very rational and also of below average intelligence and someone can also be extremely intelligent and also prone to irrational ideas. There doesn't seem to be much link between the two.

It really just comes down to how likely you are to sit down and actually think something through in a methodical way as opposed to defaulting to intuition, which is of course prone to bias and logical errors.

yeah, going to go with you have no actual data to back this up. if i had to guess, the less intelligent, educated, well read, etc. you are, the less likely you are to be prone to conspiracy bullshit (refuse to call them theories). There are always exceptions and sure "someone can be" but on a population scale, my assumption would be there is a large link between the two.

Educated/well read and intelligent aren't necessarily the same thing. You're probably right that if someone is thoughtful enough to read a lot of books they are probably less likely to subscribe to nonsense. But a lot of intelligent people in an IQ sense are also very uncurious and don't think much about anything.

I would still suggest that higher IQ is correlated with believing in fewer conspiracy bullshit. Again, on a population scale. Anyways, you asserted it first, so if you have data backing you up I’d love to see it.

I don't and I'll admit it's just my theory I've seen in suggested in a book or two. To be honest, it may just be something that my brain thinks makes sense because it helps explain why guys that clearly are intelligent (lawyers, doctors, ect) that believe all sorts of conspiracy nonsense. It may be a bias on my part in not wanting to say so many people are just stupid.

I’d venture that attorneys and IQ are less correlated than IQ and not believing in conspiracy

edit: too add, I fully believe that many people are just stupid

I'm sure there's some philosopher or academic somewhere that is able to draw a functional distinction between being inherently stupid and being an otherwise intelligent person who wholeheartedly embraces stupid ideas. I, however, have not met that person.

I think conspiracy theories have more to do with fear, anxiety and having some screws loose than intelligence, although being stupid probably doesn't help.

I know some relatively smart, educated people who have gone done those rabbit holes.

Myers-Briggs personality tests are basically astrology for people that don't believe in astrology. I think there's some useful information to be gleaned from it but it's mostly just stereotypical putting people in a box when it's way more complex than that.

I got a professional one done just because it was free and I find it interesting. But it's probably not something you want to put a ton of stock in.

Whenever I see someone use a Meyer-Briggs label on themselves I feel like I should warn them that they should avoid any contact with Scientology. The offer of a free personality test as the first stage in their recruitment process has served them well. Skepticism of Pop Psychology in the USA is sorely lacking.

I was going through old emails last week and I came across two tests that I had to take for personality traits for an old job. I was INTJ and then whatever this one means. I have the 32 page pdf, but I’m not sure how much I believe in this science.

edit: I looked through it and it explains. Sounds true, but it could be like astrology where it’s vague enough to always be right.

I agree with this mostly but I think as with most things there are degrees which people are into something that require increasing levels of craziness or stupidity.

I’m sure there are a lot of Q people who just like the idea that someone in the government is working in the shadows to take down people they think are bad. I can see the appeal in something like this, especially for the uninformed and uneducated it fits their world view and makes things feel right.

The extremely pilled people that think people they don’t like are pedophiles who drink the magical blood of children, etc are a whole other kind of crazy.

They’re both shitty groups of people, but one is waaaaay shittier imo.

I was watching a YouTube video on all the secret areas in monuments.

It auto played some video on Obelisks and how they are evil.

it then went back to explaining how the Washington Monument in DC is an obelisk and 666’ tall.

it was fun to think about all the crazy conspiracies, but in the end idk if I just think it’s made up or I’m just too lazy to care. It is fun to pretend you’re a sleuth though, so I can see how these idiots get sucked in.

I don’t think anyone of power really gives a damn about anyone other than themselves. So I can’t see them being involved in some takedown of anyone.

Using a sports example for the election, there are people who think their team lost because the other team cheated, and then there are people who think their team secretly won, but are not telling anybody because it needs to be kept a secret to save children from pedophiles.

One is a conspiracy theory, the other is batshit crazy.

IQ isn’t even correlated with IQ. It’s a bullshit measure. Maybe you mean cognitive ability or g but this is sort of worth noting. We have a general sense especially among “science” people that there’s some endocrine like intelligence system and there... isn’t.

Some peoples brains can think of answers to questions really quick. I think most of it is based on training, kind of like in sports. Everyone can jump higher and run faster if we train. Will we ever jump as high as an NBA player or run as fast as Bolt? No.

When I used to play poker 24/7 I could do the math involved almost instantly. I drank for several years (not alcoholic level, but I think drinking does affect my brain) and didn't really push my brain and now it takes me a few extra seconds to recall basic things.

I mean, cognitive ability exists. g is reliable and predictive. It isn't as good as like tolerance for ambiguity at predicting things like politics, but it exists. IQ doesn't.

What I was saying is that some people are inherently smarter naturally. And some train really hard and can be smart. But if the smart person also trained as hard, they'd crush the hard worker w bad genetics.

I understood IQ as someone's inherent mental capabilities. I (think) understand that's not really how it is used though.

that’s the concept for sure but i haven’t seen a valid measure yet. It’s really hard to even conceptualize intelligence, as you said.

IQ was a grift from the beginning IMO. People being told they’re smart is a great way to reduce skepticism. And anyone that gets a low score and is skeptical of the entire practice can just be dismissed with a simple “Of course you say that, you’re an idiot with a low IQ”. Incredibly clever. Whoever thought of it must’ve had a really high IQ.

The base level for intelligence should be answering "no" to a question like: do you believe any part of the idea that Democrats are secretly running a worldwide pedophile ring where they also harvest adenochrome from children to retain their youth?

Answering yes to that means you're an idiot, regardless of how well you sum or spell.
