how significant is this language barrier for players? it seems like a tough task for international players to mesh with players who speak different languages coached by coaches who do the same. hell, even arguing with the referee would be hard

    idk

Maybe there is a secret language that all professional soccer players speak? :idk:

they take classes to learn new languages if they move to a team that doesn't speak there language. also players usually can translate what is being said to the player while he is still learning the language

I use to wonder this as well but i think they just learn it when they get to their new teams.

I know some players now and days know about 3 different languages...Thierry Henry knows French, English & Spanish.

I think that most teams would have some sort of course to help them at least understand the soccer terms and also some sort of translator like the had for Yao whne he first got to the USA. I also think that there is a definite barrier though and that is why a lot of the South American players go to either Spain or Italy.

From my experiences in Europe. Dutch and German teams would have a basic understanding of most european languages. English players are probably english only. The Spanish and Italian clubs would speak nothing but their home languages and the french would pretend they don't know what you are saying regardless of their knowledge in said language they will respond in French until you are forced to speak rudimentary french to them. At that point they will acknowledge you in whatever language you were speaking before. And nobody has a clue what the Scottish are saying.

watch the way players "talk" to refs who speak random languages, a lot of it is body language/hand signs/pointing/recreating with hands etc. with players, most of them pick up the language and its diction (crissy walks around saying "lads" all day long) if they don't completely pick it up, someone translates.

for some reason, Patrice Evra, Carlos Tevez, and Ji Sung Park are/were all best friends. all speak English as a 2nd language, but its weird because they are from completely different parts of the globe.

btw tevez was in the EPL for 3 years, and made virtually zero progress on learning English.
