My favorite is the crappy players will become good because they've played. You could give our starting FB from last season a decade. He would never be a legit starter if we had a better player. Same could be said for a lot of positions.

Every time I think about our depth it makes me hate Flood more and more.

So according to Chris paliando on the issues board this is what the statue in front of "the yard" will look like. The new crest with the book and crown and stuff will be on the shield. And the block R will be on the handle.

Former Utah QB Brett Elliott excelling as JMU coordinator
In August 2003, Utah quarterback Brett Elliott led the Utes to a 40-20 victory over Utah State. He opened the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown pass to receiver Larry Miles on a play called Houston. The moment remains notable as it marked the first touchdown of Urban Meyer's coaching career at Utah.

Twelve years later, Elliott mentioned the touchdown pass as a fitting mile marker on his circuitous route to becoming one of the hot coordinators in college football. Elliott, 32, is in his first season as co-offensive coordinator at FCS James Madison, which pulled off a 48-45 upset of SMU on Saturday night.

If you've never heard of Elliott, that's because he got hurt a week after that victory at Utah State. An under-recruited back-up named Alex Smith took over the starting job, and in 2004 led Utah to an undefeated season and became the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. Realizing he'd have a hard time beating out Smith, Elliott transferred to Division III Linfield for the 2004 season.

Elliott laughs as he acknowledges his fleeting affiliation to Meyer's coaching tree. "I'm the dead leaf hanging on for dear life," Elliott told The Inside Read.

After transferring, things turned out well for Elliott. He went on to lead Division III Linfield to a national title in 2004. In 2005, he won the D-III Heisman, known as the Gagliardi Trophy and Melberger Award. He got a cup of coffee in the NFL with the Chargers in 2006 and played minor league ball for a few years before getting into coaching. He hooked back up with his old quarterback coach at Utah, Dan Mullen, and spent the last three years in Starkville in quality control helping with the quarterbacks. He worked closely with Dak Prescott and Bulldogs quarterback coach Brian Johnson, who replaced Smith at Utah. "He's a very sharp and up-and-coming coach," Mullen said on Sunday night. "He will be a hot name in coaching soon. He paid his dues the right way, worked hard and is taking advantage of his opportunity."

Elliott's big break came when JMU offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer left for Houston last year. JMU head coach Everett Withers is a former defensive coordinator under Meyer at Ohio State. He wanted someone with experience in Meyer's offense. Elliott walked into an ideal situation, as JMU quarterback Vad Lee, a Georgia Tech transfer, may be the best QB in the FCS. Lee ranks No. 5 in the FCS in passing yards and No. 5 in the FCS in rushing yards.

He reminds Elliott of the quarterback he left behind in Starkville. "There are so many similarities between Vad and Dak," Elliott said. "From everything on the field to what they're like off the field. They are like clones."

Elliott downplays his impact on JMU this season. He credits Mehringer and co-offensive coordinator Zak Kuhr, who brought the system with Withers over from Columbus and tweaked it to jack up the tempo. It showed in JMU's signature victory on Saturday, as Lee led the Dukes (4-0) on an eight-play, 75-yard drive for the winning touchdown with 27 seconds left to beat SMU. That leaves JMU as No. 1 in total offense (671.3), No. 2 in scoring offense (50.3) and No. 1 in rushing offense (356.3).

Elliott is the play caller, but says he walked into a loaded roster and great staff dynamic. "It's crazy how perfect of a situation it is and how seamless its been," Elliott said. "The great thing about the offensive staff is that we're all young and really get along."

Elliott jokes that he "wasn't the golden child at Utah," but it's undeniable his time there under Meyer has indelibly shaped his coaching career. And if he needs a reminder from his cameo role in Meyer's coaching ascent, he doesn't need to look further than his call sheet. JMU's base passing play is called Houston.

When Bielema was hired as Arkansas' head coach in 2013 he said Henry was one of the first people he asked to join him. Henry initially took a job in academic support until an on-field coaching position opened. Henry has spent the past two years as a graduate assistant, working mostly with the cornerbacks.

"He's relentless," Bielema said. "I'll go in there in the morning and he'll be in there. He just lives it. He's a very dedicated young man."

Henry, who was raised in Immokalee, Fla., by his grandmother, was known for his gregarious personality as a player. Bielema has seen how Henry's personality translates to the recruiting trail during the past two years.

"I put him on the road when I lost a couple of coaches," Bielema said. "Every home I sent him into, the moms and the coaches and everybody was bragging about how good of a job he does. Obviously he lived my program firsthand so he could really sell it. He's very well-rounded. Aaron's faith is very important to him. He's very special, very gifted. Grandma raised one hell of a kid."

not as excited about this hire as the other hires (he probably wont be as good as a recruiter unless he fills that fatherly-type role compared to the other staff members)

but if ash wants to bring his mentor in so that he can fully trust him to call the right plays, i can live with it. N illinois did reach a BCS bowl in 2013

We need LBs in the worst possible way. Even the guys we are bringing in I'm not high on. I'm hopeful that next year ends the cycle where I try to legit evaluate our guys on NSD and stop having to write "low ceiling" "won't play here" for so many guys. I feel like I'm losing my marbles again as I've started to look at some of the 2016 class.

This is that safety that decommitted from Temple after getting some big offers

WINT SAYS RUTGERS VISIT MAY BE NECESSARY
Although he decided on Christmas day to re-open his commitment, a move that many presumed would lead to a quick commitment to Ohio State for Brooklyn, New York 2016 defensive back Jahsen Wint. Wint says that may not be the case and he wants to make sure he's taking a good look at another school that's recently offered: Rutgers.

"I probably will visit Rutgers," Wint told 11W. "Before I make any other decision."

With a 247Sports crystal ball that reads 100-percent to Ohio State, it would be a surprise to see Wint end up anywhere else, but if there's a school that could throw a wrench in the plans, it is Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights new head coach, soon-to-be-former Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash, has been one of the driving forces in Wint's recruitment by the Buckeyes, and he's made it clear that he'd like to continue those efforts in Piscataway. Remember the general rule: nothing is more important in recruiting than relationships.

Rutgers certainly can offer a quicker path to meaningful playing time than Ohio State and, importantly, can do that in a Big Ten environment that is 45 minutes away from home.

A visit to New Jersey would have to happen after January 13th, when the recruiting dead period ends. I'm not changing my crystal ball, but I do think it's worth paying close attention to Wint's timeline for a decision.

NIU went to a BCS bowl a few years ago. I doubt he'd be as bad as some of the recent DCs we've had. I fully expect Ash to lay out the defense and Niemann to just execute it.

Aside from the RB coach & DL coach, do we have any other coaching hires remaining? It sounds like Barthel's being retained for the next year. Good move - it'll give Ash + staff some time to acclimatize to the area and re-evaluate after a year.
