is this going to be another year of watching rutgers lose on saturdays and the giants lose on sundays? if so, my yard is going to look really good this fall.
The last int was a desperation shot when all was lost..he knew he had to take it since his HC is unable to take any risks whatsoever
The thing that drives me insane is that everyone who wasn't brain dead could see these first four games happening from a mile away. But our genius AD decided to waste another offseason and dig us into a further hole. Whatever just bring back Schiano and end this 8 year long embarrassment
Just my 2 cents, but that would be a mistake. It is the same thing Maryland did bringing back Locksley instead of pursuing a guy like Satterfield. The minimal short term benefits of bringing in someone familiar instead of going for the complete rebuild. Lance Leipold is the guy I would want if I was a Rutgers fan. You are going to have to burn it all to the ground, but it has to be done to build it up right.
I disagree. Schiano is not an elite coach that will win you the big game or outcoach anyone but he's an excellent program builder and a pretty decent recruiter which is exactly what we need right now. And he's really the only one with experience with dealing with all the bullshit nj political intracies. Forget becoming good or decent right now I'd settle for not being embarassing. When you hire someone thats unproven you take the risk that they might be a rockstar or flat out terrible. We can't afford hiring another dud at this point.
I’m not discounting what Schiano accomplished the first time. I would want to know how many years is he willing to invest? He had higher aspirations before, I’d be worried about the next best thing. I guess banking on lightning striking twice doesn’t seem like a safe bet to me. Leipold has done good things in Buffalo. He seems like a hungry up and comer that has had success. By year 4, I think he could have you guys playing solid football. Schiano would likely be more impactful in years 1 & 2. Would he still be there year 5? I guess slow & steady seems more promising to me than some early moral victories that don’t amount to much, but with more uncertainty for the future. Obviously a bunch of speculation on my part. I don’t have much faith in retreads personally.
I would agree with you if recruiting, PR, booster relations etc. wasn't the political cesspool that it is in NJ. Schiano had relative success the first time because he knows NJ and how to be a politician off the field. I think Leipold is a very good coach who could go somewhere else and kill it but I'd be a little worried about him at RU. I just don't see the soft skills that, at this point, I think you need to succeed at RU. I'm also not a fan of retreads and not in love with Schiano coming back either but at least there would be no onboarding when it comes to the soft skills part of the job which is uniquely difficult at RU.
I will defer to the RU fans understanding of the internal workings of the program. My opinion doesn’t factor in any of the politics. The B1G east division may be the most competitive division in CFB. There will be no easy fix. My approach is focused on the guy that could do more with less. Once upon a time, Schiano would have been a shining example, but that was a long time ago is all I’m saying. His personal trajectory, the conference, and the game itself is very different. I’m sure you guys would just settle for some stability at this point. It would probably be refreshing to have the same offensive system/coordinator for more than one season.

Politics aside, the other thing that worries me about Leipold is that he isn't known as a lights-out recruiter which was the biggest problem with Ash. I think he could do more with less than Schiano, but I don't think Leipold is a Chris Peterson/Brian Kelly level coach and the talent gap between RU and most B1G east teams is another level compared to everything he has faced so far other than PSU earlier this year. If he can't recruit in-state, I see a better-coached version of Ash at best. Right now, the two biggest factors for the coaching hire is prior HC experience and string NJ ties which basically means recruiting.
I would like to pat myself on the back for not liking the hire from the get-go Remember when Ash decided to keep coaching at OSU for their bowl game instead of building his staff, getting settled in, recruiting, etc?
i was at the ru-shu bball game when it was announced and i was pissed. felt like such a cheap hire that wouldnt excite anyone. then i found out it wasnt even all that cheap...
Pratyk- "It's dead period in recruiting - it's alright IMO if he coaches at tOSU new years day. I can't believe the front page on SN freeboard is all about Ash coaching tOSU bowl game."
I still don't think it was that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. He was a trash coach If he would have came in december its not like he would have been less trash. We'd still be in the same position
Can we please not overcomplicate this search and just make the obvious right decision for once? Hire fucking Schiano and be done with it
I think this is what ends up happening. Do you guys think they will announce before the season is over?
I am flabbergasted we just paid about $9.5m for two coaches not to coach for us anymore. Never in a million years did I think Rutgers athletics would ever accomplish that. They also wouldn’t have done it unless these same donors were already committed to ponying up for a coach worth half a shit. I couldn’t imagine donating millions of dollars to hire/fire football coaches but bless their solid gold hearts.
God fucking bless people like Amy Towers and Greg Brown. That being said, if they're the ones ponying up then they're also gonna be the ones picking the coach. I'm hoping they do the right thing here.
Brown is close with Schiano from what I remember, right? Just hire him and be done with it. There is no other choice.
Am I dumb for not hating the idea of Butch Jones, I know he’s a weirdo and easy to make fun of but he will recruit and having two 9 win seasons recently at Tennessee seems impossible now based on what was before and after him.
