Turkish pet culture is very different from American pet culture. They have some serious issues with people setting dogs free once they're no longer puppies and because of it there is a serious stray dog problem in some of the larger cities. There are organizations in the USA that rescue dogs from Turkey, fly them here, and re-home them in the United States. Golden retrievers are one of the most common breeds for that to happen to.
I watched a documentary called "Kedi" last year about the relationship people have formed with the huge stray cat population in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkmenistan.
