I average about 4 miles a day on the days I hit my steps goal. But I’m also looking for something that would be more effective. I have a desk job for 37 hours a week, thus basically all my exercise has to come on my free time. So don’t want to be using up so much of my free time walking to try to reach my goals.
Walk during your workday. I get up and walk across the office to get water every 45 minutes or so and take a 20-30 minute walk around downtown every day (unless it’s raining).
I do go walking on my lunch break, park at the back end of the parking lot, and use the bathroom in the break room which is the furthest bathroom.

I enjoy the running apps by Fitness22. Give 5k Runner a shot. It builds up from couch to a 5k and is pretty reasonable in mixing in the running and the walking during the build ups.
Walk a little faster to get your heart rate up. That's what cardio is. If you walk fast enough to sweat and get a little winded/tired after 30 minutes you'll get there. When you're no longer sweating or winded, try jogging slightly above a fast walk. Running too hard for 10 minutes isn't going to get you anywhere. In the shape you're in, a fast walk is cardio.

Alternative to running is walk uphill / treadmill incline. That’ll get the heartrate up and get a good sweat.
