Is there any benefit to this over using an emulator on a laptop or pc? I've always been interested in pi, but I don't quite understand its application.

Well Pi's come with an HDMI output - so you can just put this small box by your TV, hook up, and go. Much more fun than playing on my laptop or PC monitor or having to hook/unhook my computer to my TV. The Pi basically becomes it's own console. And since it's cheap, I don't mind if that is it's only application.

By the way, I did the project in the OP and it works great. So now I have all the SNES and NES games loaded.

Super easy. I can help you out when you get everything in. I've set up 6-8 of them.

Nice. I already got it loaded with all SNES/NES games. I just cant get N64 to run smooth on the Pi2. I went into the retropie own overclock settings to set it to "Pi2 preset" hoping that would do it, but still not really.

That said, the SNES/NES games (the roms that arent corrupt) run awesome.

I just want to get MAME on there too.

N64 won't reliably run. There are a few games that kind of work but not really.

damn. I figured that might be the case but also hoped there might be enough there. Thankfully N64 was more of a 'nice to have'...i still have my actual system.

i've always had problems with my 64 emulators. whether on the psp, or my computer. which sucks because i really wanted to play those more than nes and snes.

no doubt. i've tried to use a ds4 and an xbox360 controller on the old games, and it doesn't feel right at all.

Yea no idea with the preloaded stuff. I would buy a new memory card and start with the OP and do it from scratch and see if it works that way. Although I used a Pi2, which is slightly better. But yours should run the old systems just fine i would think.
