That GCU doesn't? I really don't get why Toledo and Northern Illinois would do that. Is the money in the new MWC really going to be so much greater than the MAC that you're willing to geographically debase yourselves and have to find a different home for all of your other sports?
I think you guys are over-estimating GCU just a bit. My understanding is that they don't want to invest what it would take to sustain a D1 football program and would rather funnel that money into other sports.
One of my first bosses played football a the University of Tampa back in the day. They had a bunch of NFL guys and were D1 and playing FSU,UF, Miami before dropping football right before the population boom in Florida. Who knows what they would look like if they kept going. He and a bunch of his teammates were trying to bring it back even if non scholarship fcs and they got nowhere with it.
I think there are challenges beyond it being capital-intensive that will prevent it from happening. The weather here is awful for attending football games for at least half, if not more, of the season; at night it's still miserably hot even once the sun is down. Unless you build a dome like NAU there isn't a way around that and it is only going to get worse. Phoenix is a large metro full of transplants. This is a huge problem for ASU, let alone a start up program. We would all rather sit in our air conditioned homes watching our alma maters rather than baking in a stadium to watch a school we don't care about. Dillingham has alluded to wanting to broaden support from this group. Other than alumni and students, no one cares about GCU. That works fine to pack a 7K basketball arena but you're going to be hard-pressed to fill even a modestly sized FBS stadium routinely. Unlike ASU, it's located in a undesirable part of the city that is pretty much devoid of bars, restaurants, etc. Mill Ave and whatever GCU's main drag is couldn't be more different.
shout out to espn, fox, sec and big ten for killing college athletics great job, you pieces of diseased shit
You also have to think about how many penn state fans are watching together in prison. Not sure how those numbers get accounted.
Nobody gives a shit about psu. They’re a non factor especially after they lose their one big game per year. They never play in big season opening games. The cfb world loves to hate watch fsu. Especially during the cfp era.
I’m new to the B1G but how wide is the Penn State fanbase? They seem more regional to me, especially in the post-kid diddling era. Never seen a Penn State hat in Times Square or the Vegas Strip.
I’m pretty sure we have the largest living alumni base in the country. Outside of that, there’s a pretty large portion in all the east coast cities/ NJ.
PSU fans aren't as invasive as Ohioans, but more of them actually attended the school so they arent as obnoxious with the yard flags.
PSU is #6. Their game wasn’t even on tv last week. Give me a break. Kids are saying the program has no rizz.
I think we definitely juice the ratings by playing in a lot of stand alone early season games (ND in 21, LSU in 22 and 23, GT and BC this year were the only games on). Make sure your ACC Network Xtra subs are up and running for our big clash with Charleston Southern (also 1-9) next week.
I would love to know the models the networks would use to determine a teams value given all the variables of 1) who you are playing 2) when you are playing (stand alone vs prime time parallel to other top tier teams/games, etc) 3) how good your team is in any given year it seems like it could be a complex model to account for all the factors and boil it down to one score per team that would be applicable for an average season of that team/school
LA is the #2 media market in the country. Granted everyone isn't cfb obsessed there but it's not hard to imagine them drawing more viewers than a team from ...State College, Pennsylvania.
The link I posted above proves my point. Penn State is the flagship university in the 5th largest state in the union. It’s not rocket science to see why they’re one of the most watched programs.
Lol I don't do this stuff to make money, it's just a hobby for me; and I share in hopes others find it interesting
Back in May he reported he was about to go into hospice care. I’m not sure what illness he had. Hodgkins Lymphoma has been suggested.
