i tried to move to either the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium or Denmark about 10-15 years ago. People act like this is easy, but for me it was incredibly difficult. (It was also during a global recession, so maybe that was part of the problem) First problem was that nobody would even think about giving me a comparable job in Denmark, Netherlands or Belgium as someone who didn't already speak fluent Danish, Dutch, or French. I can't imagine trying to get a job in somewhere like Japan. For most of the world, you have to really commit to learning a specific language. The UK's visa system, at least back then, was designed to keep out non-EU nationals. There are tiers of nationality, and America is in one of the shit ones. They give preference to people with a PhD, so if you have that, you're in luck. And another major problem was wages/salaries. Nobody pays like America. In my field, wage levels in UK/Ireland/NL/DK are very low. In places like Spain, Italy and Portugal they are incredibly low. Ireland was probably the most realistic choice, but they are small and I had trouble finding employers. I didn't look into Australia, Canada or NZ, but I've heard they are probably more realistic than Europe.
I don’t know what the level is. I have long roots here and are close to family. When my parents are gone and my niece off to college, maybe. I think it’s increasingly likely that I move in retirement. Argentina, France, Portugal and South Korea sound good after surface level research.
No, that would be ridiculous to uproot my family and leave my existing family and friends. If you haven't noticed, family and friends are important to me.
Well guess I’m fucked lol - got an MBA but I’ve done jack shit with it because I hated all but like one or two classes. So effectively I have a worthless piece of paper
I live in a country that in some ways is even more conservative than America. I love the idea of moving to a more liberal place but reality just won't allow it. I have basically two marketable skills (diving lobster, bartending) and one of those two just doesn't work anywhere else. Plus I got a mortgage and a kid and family here so yeah. I just have to be some sanity in a ocean of stupid.
Tons of shit to do outdoors and still have the west side of the state keeping the entire state progressive.
i would move to new zealand and have kicked the tires on it before with recruiters to see what it entails the difficulty in moving with pets is a limiting factor in a big way
Would move to a blue state before leaving the country again. To my mind, there’s a non-zero chance of a bloodless dissolution of the US into multiple blocs within the next 50-100 years anyways, might as well get a jump on the migration.
I've managed to get most of my family on board with the idea of fleeing to Europe. Probably Netherlands or Belgium as they are the easiest to get a visa in. Getting my wife to leave her mom behind if we have kids might be a problem but she definitely isn't getting invited along. Currently in Rome and surprised by how much I like it. I don't have any Italian relatives though so that's probably out. Now I just need to sell my businesses off in the next few years and hope it's enough to do some weird job over here.
Guy I used to work with got asylum in Canada because he is gay and big into drag. It was tough for him because he can't come back for so many years I think but I see pictures of him living his life in Canada in a way he just couldn't here and it makes me happy for him and also sad that so many people are living here feeling like they can't be what makes them happy. I guess what I'm saying is if you're feeling trapped by the laws or mentality of the place you're at, don't be scared to risk it and leave.
you live in one of the least diverse, whitest metros in America, in one of the most talibanized states in America. You need not fret.
Currently in a blue dot in a red sea in a blue state. The GF is Canadian and could find work in any city. We have talked about moving to Victoria or someplace in BC. I have a nice Canadian Citizenship path #bLeSsEd. Problem is Canada isn't as great as Americans think it is. They are pretty backwards in many circles and have an Alt Right movement of their own burgeoning. I'd still pack up and move if the GOP wins 2024 with an improved coup strategy from 2020
Live in liberal (though quite expensive) SoCal, so I’m ok until we get into the late-stage theocratic police state transition. That said, I really enjoyed Germany, Czech Republic and Poland to visit but don’t have the language skills (I can speak limited Spanish) to be of any value there. Doing a two-week trip to England, Belgium, France and Netherlands toward the end of the month, so will be interested to see how that is. My company does have an office in London, but I’ve been WFH since 2011, so that’d be a tough transition to go back to that lifestyle. Tldr version: I’ve thought about it casually but have done no research because my current location and working conditions are highly desirable.
Nashville is pretty diverse and the minority council members are very much pro-police. It’s the pesky white libs that are against them. In all seriousness, crime/council members is one of a few things like regressive marijuana and alcohol rules, and now abortion.
That’s a silly assumption and it’s weird that you mention this whenever I post about crime. There are plenty of white people in East that commit crimes.
