Somber, but I have enjoyed this season immensely. Seems since they got the green light to make a ton of content, they've gone to a more anthology approach

Reddit is VERY upset with that episode. It was okay, plot was pretty messy (not a sperm joke), some lines were funny though, the trebuchet/catapult distinction calling back to the trebuchet memes from a few years ago is one that will be overlooked.

It wasn't a top tier episode but it was solid.

Still haven't had any inter-dimensional jumping yet this season, unless I'm misremembering something.

They’re highly concerned about the complete lack of portal gun. And that Rick is not being the smartest being in the universe. Too many of them tie their identities to Rick and think they’re him and such, you know how Reddit is.

The show, by and large, is very smart and savvy, which makes its worst fans (who, and I mean this in the worst possible way, have no lives and have to define their sense of self worth through something as vain and pointless as a TV show) feel like they are smart and savvy, so when an episode is stupid (but fun, imo), their insecurities flare up and they lash out at the thing they love, because they don't want to see it go down, knowing they'll go down with it.

That's basically overzealous fandom in a nutshell; attaching your sense of self worth to a piece of media. Star Wars fans have been riding that surf on and off for twenty years now. Star Trek fans just started a few years back.

Man it's going to be a trip and a half when Marvel inevitably starts to dip.

It was a premise that should have been pivoted away from after the first 2-3 minutes. Fine for a cold open but then it just went nowhere interesting and the jokes just didn't land.

Once they got that multi-season contract they basically admitted they were going to be more focused on quantity over quality.

If S4 is the template though, they will build towards stronger/better episodes by the end of the season.

    from reddit
Warning if you have not seen the season finale yet.

If you're like me, you're probably wondering what just happened.

    Rick's Backstory:

The S3Ep1 backstory Rick claimed was fabricated was real; following the deaths of Diane and Beth, our Rick went on a murder spree, searching the "infinite" universes for the specific Rick who killed Diane and Beth, whom he suspects to be the one who offered him the portal tech in the first place (he does all this while fighting the Galactic Federation, of course). He discovered an early (or at least early from our perspective) version of the Citadel of Ricks, which he eliminated in an unsuccessful attempt to get his revenge. Following this, he spent much of his life after Blood Ridge causing chaos for the Citadel and drunkenly defending himself at his old, destroyed home. Eventually, after pummeling the Ricks of the Citadel enough to gain their near-worship, he reached the status of "God" in his own mind and attempted to rebuild the Citadel in his image; he must have grown tired of it due to either watching it stray from his vision or the realization the Citadel would not fix his problems. He came to some Beth's house to live with her and her family, and that's the end of what we see.

    But that's not all.

    "Evil" Morty:

The main confusion I had and the confusion I saw others having in the live and post-discussion finale threads was the same: what really WAS President Morty's plan? Well, I think something like this: long ago, this Morty discovered that some (if not all) Ricks knew that they were not the smartest man in every reality, and so they found a way to isolate the realities where they were the smartest beings on the Central Finite Curve in order to stay away from their own insecurities (the realities without genius Ricks) and gaslight all other life forms into believing only Ricks can be the smartest. This Morty discovered this, created a stream of Mortys flooding into the Citadel at the end of S1Ep10 to create large enough issues in the Citadel to capitalize off it, successfully did so by becoming President Morty in S3Ep7, which he then used to have Mortys labor under the Citadel on the superweapon that would destroy the "wall" separating the Central Finite Curve from the actual infinite multiverse, the one with realities where Rick is not the smartest man alive. "Evil" Morty happens to catch Rick C-137 and his Morty on the Citadel at the right time to explain he accepts he is evil to them because Ricks have a victim mentality that they believe justifies their mistreatment of Mortys. He needs Rick's plans of the Central Finite Curve to complete his weapon, which he powers with the blood of dead Ricks and Mortys being killed (probably over and over until the pods are destroyed) through rigged Operation Phoenix pods. He allows everyone else on the Citadel to die as he escapes the Central Finite Curve and uses his newly constructed portal gun to access the actual infinite multiverse. He does this to escape the cycle of Ricks abusing Mortys and the God-like mentality of Ricks. Our Rick and Morty have escaped being killed or sucked into this infinite multiverse, but it is seemingly now open to all who have interdimensional portal tech (with some adjustments, maybe). Evil Morty's arc seems over to me, honestly, at least for now; the world (worlds) of Rick and Morty has been flipped on its head and he has achieved his goal. The only witnesses are our Rick and Morty and some probably hella-confused Mortyburg Mortys.

    But why?

    Rick and Morty:

President Morty wants to drive his point home to Rick C-137 because our Rick is an important figure to the Citadel and most likely an important figure or at least a participant in various Morty-oppression ventures (namely, the Morty Market, Free Morty Vouchers, and the general mockery of Mortys throughout the Central Finite Curve). As far as we know, Evil Morty is not a previous partner of our Rick.

    Our main characters.

    Morty's Choice:

Morty chooses to stay as Rick's partner despite all of the other revelations in this episode, refusing to consider himself as Rick's enemy. He's made this choice before when prompted by Birdperson in S1Ep11, again by Birdperson in S2Ep5, and through the whole finale he was the one depending on Rick, not the other way around. It looks like this Morty is as good a one as the "Rickest Rick" is going to get. I hope this is the last time Rick and Morty are teased to break up, considering this is the umpteenth time Morty has chosen to stay Rick's partner and at this point Rick seems to need this Morty's loyalty.

    One more thing.

    Morty Market:

Basically, Ricks set up Beths and Jerrys in order to create Mortys, which they sometimes kidnap, clone, brainwash, and deliver to (most likely high-paying) Ricks. Only very few realities naturally had Beth and Jerry falling in love and having Morty, who Ricks found to be the perfect partner. So most Jerry-Beth marriages are built on a fleeting attraction meant to create Morty, which creates Summer as a by-product and dooms these marriages to fall apart because of a lack of genuine love. This would explain the terrible marriage Beth and Jerry have in early seasons, as well as why Rick hates Jerry- not just for his mediocrity, but also because he knows Beth does not love Jerry but thinks she does because of Rick tampering. It's also nice in a way, since our Beth and Jerry have chosen to love each other despite the high probability their marriage was founded on the interference of Cupid Ricks.

EDITS: A thing I forgot to add originally but one I believe is essential to understanding the main characters of the finale.

Evil Morty is not totally evil. He's not good; he killed Ricks and Mortys alike and selfishly brought the Central Finite Curve and the rest of the multiverse together regardless of the consequences of either side. But not evil.

Evil Morty knows his place in the story is the villain. Rick is not a hero; he's the protagonist. We root for him because we think we're supposed to, and Evil Morty is aware that he's alone in his resolve, because no other Morty has made it this far. Evil Morty is the antagonist; opposed to Rick, so we're supposed to root against him, but his motives (escaping Rick's multiverse) can be argued to be more justifiable than Ricks' (isolating themselves in their multiverse as the Gods in order to maintain power above others). Evil Morty is selfish, uncaring, sadistic, manipulative, unloving; but he is that way because it's what he needs to do to escape Rick's prison, one that we can at least partially attribute to our Rick.

Credit to u/curiousmind111 for explaining the fact that Evil Morty tainted the supply of portal fluid being used to refill Ricks' portal guns on the Citadel and that Rick wanted the pure portal supply under the Citadel because it had not been tainted.

Credit to u/jp_1896 for offering a better explanation as to why Evil Morty focuses on our Rick; Evil Morty wants our Rick because our Rick knows something about the concept of using a superweapon to break the wall between the Central Finite Curve and everything else, implying our Rick has some sort (most likely the most direct sort) of responsibility in isolating the Central Finite Curve or at least maintaining the isolation.

It's important to note that a symbol related to that of the Citadel exists as our Rick goes on his revenge spree; I think some early version of the Citadel existed, but Rick nearly destroyed it, leading to a bunch of Ricks rebuilding it with a main goal being to kill our Rick. He responds by just killing them instead, leaving the ones worshipping him alive and leading to his taking over the Citadel. I assume he uses the Citadel to search for a way to save Diane and Beth or at least get his revenge, and upon a rewatch, it's clear that Rick is responsible for the Central Finite Curve; the entire structure of the Citadel is supported by the Central Finite Curve (so he'd know it exists as Citadel leader), Rick has it in his memories, and as several users have pointed out (u/ImAbetastico, u/Mdgt_Pope, u/FleeRancer), Rick would have had motivation to create it not just to keep being the smartest but also to get rid of realities Dick-Rick (the one who killed Diane and Beth) could not be from, assuming Dick-Rick is the smartest person in his own reality.

Those are probably the major things, although there might be more details I'm forgetting.

Feel free to correct any of my details if they're wrong, and add anything you feel is important for people to know to understand the finale.
