I think if you had any kind of power in the church at his age, it's hard to be untouched by a centuries-long scandal of abusing kids. I'm not justifying it obviously
That’s just simply not true. His name was mentioned in nearly every write up I read for candidates, though always being considered a long shot. I mean the NYT wrote an article simply about his chances last week.
had a lotta fun but wasnt quite able to push opening a bww in the vatican across the finish line. best of luck to bob!
The average person didn't hear about him bc he was such a longshot. "Unknown" maybe wasn't the right word but even the Cardinal Report site didn't have much on his views. He wasn't even on their "Where they stand" page until he was named Pope lol. It was a surprise pick.
I'm not saying it's good. Like I said my immediate family left the church as a kid because the priest had abused one of my dad's brothers. My grandma knitted the priest's garments. I'm just talking about how it was
I mean a nickname for Francis was Junta Jorge because he looked the other way when people were disappearing during Argentina's Dirty War
The Cardinals were offered their report in hard copy before entering conclave so not completely rubbish
I don't know that he viewed the jews as subhuman, so much as he felt betrayed by them, because they didn't convert to evangelical Christianity. That's not to defend his antisemitism, but from what I understand he was actually very moderate compared to most Europeans at the time with regards to Jewish people. Pretty much all of Europe was anti-semitic back then, unfortunately. I guess what I'm saying is, between Martin Luther and the Catholic Church of his day, Martin Luther was probably the less anti-semitic of the two, even in old age when he wrote some really angry shit about Jewish people.
Btw, it was this mishandling of the abuse claims that was the reason he was deemed a long shot. Everything else about him was highly thought of by cardinals. Seems like they found a way to get over that concern.
User Jesus actually having some grasp of religious history and theology is not what I’d expect on here
I haven’t watched a second, I’ve seen their work on the Supreme Court. Hilarious the guy is a registered republican considering they’ve always treated the poor like shit, and minorities, they’re just more in your face about it now.
I mean, the Catholic Church was, of course, horrible towards Jews (and Muslims and everyone else) for almost their entire history, this isn't a contest or something, but Martin Luther wrote one of the most antisemitic treatises in history and you can draw a direct line between Luther's writings on Jews and the Nazis with regard to German Protestant attitudes towards Jewish people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Jews_and_Their_Lies
I like deep dish pizza. I have to take a nap or go to bed early afterwards but it's good. Jeppson's Malort is like a Hot Ones DA Bomb type thing. My friends and I bought it once and it's so bad. I'd rather drink rumple minze, even though it tastes like mouthwash
I must have missed that. Seems unlikely with what we've see from him. Maybe in the 80's before he left for Peru the first time.
I took issue with this I don't think anyone who writes a 65,000 word treatise on a subject is considered a moderate on that issue, let alone one called "On the Jews and Their Lies".
