Either they messed with his mechanics or college hitters were swinging at everything. Looking at his college numbers, his Walks/9 inn. was right around 4.0 for his career.

In pro ball, he hasn't been below 7.0 and he's been at 13.5 last year and 15.8! this year. You can use small sample size as an excuse but these red flags are huge. I don't have high hopes for his future as a starter.

In their defense, the Hoch draft was really weak and it was either him or Andrew Miller as the top arms. Obviously we chose wrong. Which is tradition. Zimmer was the right pick and he would have been a good pitcher if not for the injuries. Crow was an awful pick from the get-go. Mazzicato is TBD but he was a major reach, draft bonus savings or not.

 

The Royals are notorious for fitting pitchers into their box. This is the answer.
