Anyone defending jones or using him as an example of free speech needs to be immediately recognized as irredeemable. The latter has some leeway if they're genuine, but that's a slight chance. Mainly, fuck him, fuck anyone on his train, in his swath, or remotely moved by the wind. I hope he fucking chokes to death
Hunter s. Thompson had a great like about Nixon ~ the only thing redeemable about him is that a hammerhead shark might shit him out some day
10 years now. Still remember vividly where I was when this thread got started as the news was breaking
I would have quite literally been at work at an elementary school. But don't remember any vivid details about the day. I think 9/11 is really the only thing that sticks with me to the point where I can replay that entire day in my mind.
Yep. I can't even feel outrage anymore when shootings happen because I know nothing is going to be done about it. Sadness & anger, absolutely. But nothing that sustains to the point of a call to action.
yeah it was the one that made me sell my guns. Just a dumb break action shotgun and bolt action deer rifle, but just couldn't stand to own any sort of that shit anymore. I don't know how anyone with kids can stand to own one of those things anymore.
Just a profoundly awful event that has to be the worst mass shooting in the unfortunately large amount of mass shootings we've had. I'm still in awe that absolutely nothing was done about it.
Same. I was at one of the gyms on campus at PSU and saw the news breaking when they hadn't said where it was in CT yet but I had the worst feeling it was going to be Newtown (I grew up there). Absolutely awful.
It wouldn’t bring back a single life, but Adam Lanza not having to spend years in dark solitude before living in fear every second until eventually being brutally murdered by an inmate doesn’t sit right with me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
weirdly Lanza is one of the few I have sympathy for because it seems like he had legit mental health stuff he was tortured by.
A guy who works with some of my people adjacently had a child that made it out that day. The stuff he’s shared about what his son saw is heartbreaking.
Ugh tried to go back and read the wiki page just as a reminder. Got to here and had to stop. I just can't. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Hook_Elementary_School_shooting Lanza entered Room 8, a first-grade classroom where Lauren Rousseau, a substitute teacher, had herded her first grade students to the back of the room, and was trying to hide them in a bathroom, when Lanza forced his way into the classroom.[55] Rousseau, Rachel D'Avino (a behavioral therapist who had been employed for a week at the school to work with a special needs student), and fifteen students in Rousseau's class were killed. Fourteen of the children were dead at the scene; one injured child was taken to a hospital for treatment, but was later declared dead.[52] Most of the teachers and students were found crowded together in the bathroom.[61] A six-year-old girl, the sole survivor, was found by police in the classroom following the shooting.[52] She hid in a corner of the classroom's bathroom during the shooting.[62] Her family's pastor said she survived by playing dead. When she reached her mother, she said, "Mommy, I'm okay, but all my friends are dead." The child described the shooter as "a very angry man."[63][64] A girl hiding in a bathroom with two teachers told police that she heard a boy in the classroom screaming, "Help me! I don't want to be here!" to which Lanza responded, "Well, you're here," followed by "hammering" sounds.[65]
I remember texting my wife that she prob should avoid the news as this was happening. That's the only time I remember doing that.
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/03/17/the-reckoning I’m sure it’s been posted along the way in here but this was such an interesting read. I have sympathy for him but I can’t subscribe to the mental health part of this. His condition resulted in him not being socialised but fundamentally he planned something so heinous that he knew it would elicit the kinds of emotion and empathy that he apparently didn’t have. There’s something very evil in that imo.
the last paragraph doesn’t make sense. This was a kid with either severe OCD, anxiety, autism or a combination of such. His case is actually kind of unusual in that regard. He had no criminal history or known conduct related issues. He isn’t Nikolas Cruz. We don’t know the “why” but I think it’s probably fair to say that he was in a lot of emotional pain and had been for awhile.
The point I’m making is that it is talked about how he lacked things like empathy because of his condition, but he clearly carefully planned this for maximum emotional impact. What the piece talks about is resenting being over parented and it very clearly separates the acts he performed into three segments (his own suicide, the murder of his mother and his school shooting). I can understand the mental health point for 1 and 2 and also for certain murders. For example often times when a parent murders a partner or their child as part of a murder suicide, they will have a logic to it (“they can’t go on without me”).
Not that there haven’t been other ‘wtf’ moments in this country. But I truly think this might have been the final ‘fork’ in the road. Some considered their guns more important than children and this ‘fear’ of losing them was followed by electing Trump and a huge awakening of racism, bigotry, misogyny, etc. When a sect of the crowd realized that certain people they vote in won’t protect children…well, they won’t protect anybody else. Money and evil have a path in this world if you prop up those that are evil, greedy, or narcissistic. Alas, here we are.
It seems like tragedies around Christmas stick with me. Not that this one needed any help. The Lockerbie bombing was like that for me as one of the very first things I can squint and remember as a very young child. Idk my point and I'm rambling but these things around the holidays create some kind of really dark bizzaro world negative of the idea of Christmas where you're supposed to be making good lasting memories and these families are just thrown into deep despair.
Being a teacher, with a 5 year old at the time, I saw the news breaking and my attention was rapt the rest of class. I am thankful to God the next period was my planning period bc when the bell ring I bawled like a newborn. this country is irredeemable
This is probably the least surprising development of this process. It's next to impossible for rich and influential people to be held accountable in this country.
This country is so goddam soft for half of its citizens to think we put boots in people's asses. This clown has tormented victims families and still hasn't paid a fucking dime. Look in the goddam mirror folks!
There are legal options in bankruptcy for things like that. It just takes time/money/effort. Not saying it’ll be easy but their representation is about as good as it could possibly be to make Jones do what he has to do.
It’s incredibly frustrating that Infowars is still in operation. And rather than just some astronomical figure that nobody actually believes will ever be paid in full, I wish they could do some kind of swift forensic audit on him, liquidate a high percentage of his assets and inevitably imprison him for attempting to hide the true amount of his assets from the court.
The ultimate FAFO would be to fraudulent transfer assets in bankruptcy then lie to the court then be held in contempt, not respond to the contempt order, then get sent to actual jail when he gets pulled over because of some a speeding ticket or something.
He actually started a new show called The Alex Jones Show and (I think) is trying to position it as completely unrelated to InfoWars or its holding company(s). Just blatant bullshit.
