Desantis ignored the ruling and drew his own map which got pretty big coverage bc of getting rid of a black district in north Florida
What are the chances they take their time/argue/appeal/etc and there isn't a new map by the time of the next election. It's also fucking while wild that there are literally unconstitutionally elected representatives serving in our gov't
Slow Burn has been good so far imo. It's interesting that Joel is setting up the argument that Thomas really just thinks that helping people and forcing inclusion sets them up for failure even though he himself benefited from those things. Like, in his head, he thinks he would have gotten into Yale Law all on his own and the fact that affirmative action initiatives existed people assumed he was a beneficiary and therefore discounted his having gone to Yale. So his reaction to that was to that was to become anti any help for people of color or poor people in general. That's so fucked up and evil. He doesn't hate black or poor people, he just thinks helping them is wrong bc they'll be dependent on the help and can't do on their own so he got in bed with white racists and does their bidding for them. Just an incredible set of mental gymnastics for him to make himself feel better about not getting a job straight out of Yale Law. My man, the odds you would have gotten into Yale as a black man, even if you were the most deserving man on the planet, were very slim in the 70's. You benefited from it, and that's great. That's why it was put in place. But you turn around and hate the very thing that got you there? What the fuck? You have to be one egotistical fuck to think you didn't benefit from those programs in the early 70's and instead think they actually harmed you bc you think others viewed you as a charity case. Did some racists fuck view people from those programs that way? Absolutely. But the answer isn't to close the door behind you so others won't have to deal with the horror of not getting the job of their choice after going to fucking Yale Law. Pull yourself up front the bootstraps so everyone knows you did it the hard way when the deck is already stacked against you, I guess.
it's a really smart (evil) playbook to just make your own map, let it get tied up in court until post election, and then control government for a couple of years
Damn forgot it came out today, will listen to half of it on my way home tonight. Thanks for the reminder. Was listening to BTB from yesterday this morning.
Yes sir. I'm a little over halfway through first episode and it's educational. I drive 30 minutes to and from work so I have about an hour for pods a day. I do BTB two days a week, Bomami, and a few sneaker pods mixed in for the most part.
The Vince McMahon series was a lot to take in. Between the docs, I've been watching recently (Best of Enemies, Riotsville USA, and The Reagan Show) and this season of Slow Burn. I've fallen down a rabbit hole of US politics post-1965. I really don't listen to Bomani as much as I used to. It's pretty much Foxworth Friday during the summer. Lions led by Donkeys cures my Military history fix. It would have been interesting if Joel could interview Emma Mae or even Clarence's son Jamal. All of this is very interesting. But it also further proves that Clarence has always been a person motivated by self-gain and has very rarely shown that he wanted to better his community around him. The toxic workplace comments don't surprise me, even for the hill. Specifically since he targeted black female subordinates. Then it becomes his word vs her word contest.
I try my best to not be overly critical of the views on society of people of other race/culture bc they have gone through some shit that I haven't. Knowing that people that share the same skin tone as Clarence almost universally hate him makes me feel better about thinking he's a piece of shit.
He grew up in that area, has personal knowledge of those issues. Like a true conservative - zero empathy unless you or someone you care about have been personally affected.
I think we get opinions tomorrow too. That feels like the perfect time to announce they killed the student loan deal.
IvanTheTerrible I finished up the new Clarence episode this morning. My biggest takeaway was that Thurgood could have stayed for 15 months and then been replaced by a Clinton pick instead of a Bush pick. Zero chance that happens today. Hell we had one DIE and we didn't hold a vote for a year bc the Senate wouldn't even vote bc the Potus wasn't from their party. The whole court has become so politicized that's it's a fucking game now.
IMO aligns with his originalism, whether you like it or not (since lots of Indian laws are on the books). Weird dude.
well they've been taking so long on such few cases, they eventually had to release a bulk amount of them
If that’s the only way to get him there, I’ll do it. I just don’t like that he’s going to enjoy himself so much on the way.
This is a good read https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/06/clarence-thomas-indian-law-originalism-history.html
