Anybody gotten certified to do this? Been thinking about it for a while and think I might this summer. How long is the class you have to go through and how much does it cost?

taking a 6 week course here at usc in the fall semester. if you do one this summer they usually cost around 400 or so, takes about a week if you get private lessons. gonna be fucking sweet...a couple of my fraternity brothers are certified and go to charleston all the time to dive. one of my buddies brought home a 14 lb javascript:void(0);lobster last time...his profile pic is him sitting on the bottom of the ocean with a shark swimming right overhead and them circling all around. it looks cool as hell

Nice. After you get certified, how much does the gear cost? I'm not trying to dive a mile or anything, just enough to see some cool shit. I figure I'd need a tank and mask. Anything else? Maybe a spear to catch dinner?

I remember when that kid died in the scuba incident at Bama. Thats a bad ass sig of the wolf guitar BH33. Thanks for not completely leaving me out to dry on the cooler. Icanbeatali can suck it. Yall are right I do take stuff too seriously but I'm just overworked, can't sleep, and stressed out about law school. I guess life is easier when your parents buy you a house and a nice flat screen tv and don't expect you to ever do anything. But I don't have any problems that a little mary j can't handle.

Don't buy a tank unless you're gonna go A LOT every year. Seriously. my buddies go prob 15 times a year at least, and they dont have their own tanks. you can rent them for real f'n cheap, i think they get them for like 8 bucks a tank when they go. youll want a wet suit, a mask and fins obviously, a knife, some other stuff. i know google isnt your strong suit, but google "so you wanna learn to scuba dive", shit ilke that. i read stuff on about.com for about 2 hours and learned a ton...expect to spend around 400-500$ in gear total id say

You can probably find a 3 day course over a long holiday weekend. They will teach you the basics in a classroom one day and then take you to a pool for the other 2 days. The one I took cost only around $150 but then you had to buy equipment. (fins and snorkle) The thing with these type of courses are they dont fully certify you but the company I used had frequent discounted trips to places like Grand Cayman (some of the best diving on earth) where you can go get your complete certification. So I ended up dropping a few hundred for the class and equipment and then waiting a few months and taking one of the company sponsored trips to the Caribbean for another long weekend. All in all, I probably spent between $700 & $800 and ended up with a Caribbean trip, scuba certification and scuba gear.

yeah it all depends on the route you wanna go...the week long courses i was talking about will fully certify you. i think you need 3 (might be 5) open water dives to get certified, but those are covered in the course. i know here in columbia they certify you in lake murray for your dives.

For me nothing was super difficult but during your 1st open water dive you will probably be pretty nervous. Learning to clear your mask and learning to share your regulator will probably be the most challenging and I think realizing you are tens of feet underwater instead of in the deep end of the pool adds to the nervousness.

No, not at all. As long as you can breath and swim you are good.

really speaks to the quality of something if it can be considered both new and original at the same time.

Apparently I've got to completely chill my act out or I'm permabanned for eternity.

stay away from the quick courses, or getting certified through patty( or however they spell it) they teach you the basics but don't get into everything deeply. kind of like here is enough so we can't get sued, but um not enough to keep you from dieing if you get in the situation.

I got certified when I was 14 and I loved it. Haven't been on a dive in a few years but its one of the most fun things I've ever done in my life. Was in an underwater cave 120 feet down at Morrison Springs in Florida (crystal clear water, absolutely beautiful but cold as fuck!) and there was an air pocket at the top of the cave where you could breath without your regulator. It was sweet.

Cayman Islands are the best diving on this side of the world. Unbelievable visibility and wildlife diversity. I'd also recommend doing a night dive on one of the Bond film ship wrecks if you make it down there.

I got certified a few years ago when I was at auburn. Did our dives at vortex springs and Panama City. I've been diving once since in Jamaica at a resort. The water up here is way too cold and murky. I'm looking to make a trip to the caribbean next year and hopefully get some diving in.

Do y'all own any gear or just rent every time? To me it seems impractical to buy because I probably won't dive enough and bringing gear on a plane would be a huge pain.

I rent because I usually only go once a year or so. Would rather have gear I know has been checked consistently by a professional.
