Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers (-165, 5.5)

The Kings have won four in a row, and their top line is a big reason why.

Ryan Smyth, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams have combined for nine goals and 14 assists in Los Angeles' first five games.

The Kings have won the first two games of their six-game raod trip by 2-1 scores, getting strong goaltending from Jonathan Quick. But his job has been made easier by the top line, which has scored the first goal in both games.

The line also has accounted for five of Los Angeles' seven power-play goals.

Kopitar has a goal and two assists in LA's last two meetings with New York.

    Pick: Los Angeles

Pittsburgh Penguins at Carolina Panthers (+111, 6)

When you have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on your roster, you have a lot of options.

While most coaches set their lines and stay with them unless there is an injury or a major slump, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma has been experimenting with multiple players alongside his two stars, something even he did not do last season.

Ten different Penguins skated alongside Crosby in Saturday's triumph at Toronto, including Malkin, who also has been playing a bit with Jordan Staal, who usually skates on the third line.

"It's good to know everyone's game, and I think it can probably make us harder to defend at times," Staal told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Whatever Bylsma is doing, it's working. The Penguins are 3-0 on their four-game road trip, collecting 14 goals.

This is the first meeting between the clubs since the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs, when Pittsburgh swept Carolina, outscoring the Hurricanes, 20-9.

    Pick: Pittsburgh

Hondo, whose double downer with the Rockies and Jets raised the nasty number to a whopping 1,700 delahoussayes, was conducting an exhaustive analysis of the upcoming championship series.

Today, he'll let it ride with the horse racing picks of Anthony Affrunti -- the Post's Puny Pony Picker (the diet finally seems to be working ). Here's what AA has to say: 10 units to win on Mets Magic in the eighth at Delaware Park. World Cup Qualifier
    Ecuador +1.91 over CHILE PINNACLE
The situation is this. If Ecuador wins and there is a loser in Uruguay/Argentina match Ecuador is in while the loser of the aforementioned is out! Obviously Chile is a better side than Ecuador and they are playing this one in Chile, however, there are rumblings that Chile will not boast a strong line-up. They will try new faces and give some youngsters a chance, almost giving Ecuador the victory with an easy type game. Chileans would love to see either Argentina or Uruguay miss out on the World Cup and this is really there chance. Chile has already qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and has nothing to play for at all. Ecuador knows what lies ahead in this one and must win at all cost to have any chance of qualification making this a must play at a great price. Play: Ecuador +1.91 (Risking 2 units).

    World Cup Qualifier
    Argentina +2.10 over URUGUAY PINNACLE
Because I am giving Ecuador as a play, it is only right that I have an opinion on this match as well, as it means so much to both countries. A win or a draw will see Argentina through however; they will be gunning for a victory looking to cement their place in the 2010 World Cup. If Argentina decides to sit back and play for a tie they will find themselves in major trouble as Uruguay has plenty of attacking talent. Diego Maradonna must realize his job at stake here and only a positive result will secure his job as Argentina’s National Team Manager. This game is a really pressure cooker for both teams as they are fully aware of what’s at stake. Argentina has really underachieved thus far in the qualifying stages but given the circumstance they really do have a much better squad and more experienced than Uruguay. Can you imagine a World Cup without Argentina? I certainly cannot. The pressure is on both countries as the world awaits this screamer of a match and as a result of shear quality and skill and at this generous price, Argentina should be considered a must play. Play: Argentina +2.10 (Risking 2 units).

    Wednesdays' Lineup
15 Dime --- BOISE STATE and OVER (2-Team, 6 1/2-point teaser. We're going to tease the side and total down in our favor using a 6 1/2 point teaser selection.)

For the first time in a while, I feel like Vegas is right on the money with it's line and total, meaning it's time to play a teaser to get the value we need. I kick myself because I actually thought about teasing Arkansas State (my 15-dimer) and the UNDER (my free play) last night, but eventually went with Arkansas State on the money line... and had they not committed 14 turnovers and 82 penalties, I might have gotten it right. Nevertheless, I believe the two-team teaser is the right play here because we can get Boise at around -2.5 or -3 and the total will come in somewhere around 46 or 46.5 (at least that's what I got it at).

First off, you have to believe Boise is going to win this game. They've come too far this season and are now in prime position to make a run at a major BCS bowl game if they keep this unblemished record, so even though I do expect Tulsa to give them a run for their money early, I believe in the end Boise just has better talent on both sides of the ball, especially when you compare Boise's offense to Tulsa's defense. The only major test Tulsa has had came a few weeks ago at Oklahoma, and the Sooners scored a 45-0 shutout win. Folks, the score could have been worse but Bob Stoops took out many of his starters in the fourth quarter. Let's also keep in mind it was Landry Jones and NOT Sam Bradford running the offense. Although Jones was recruited more heavily than Boise QB Kellen Moore, Moore is further along in his career with a better offensive line in front of him. How in the world can we expect the Golden Hurricane to stop this offense tonight? To put it mildly, they can't.

But the biggest reason for going with the teaser tonight instead of just the points on the side is the fact that I don't completely trust the Broncos defense... and we all know how well Tulsa can score. Let's say Boise gets up by 14 points late in the fourth quarter and kicks the ball back to Tulsa. GJ Kinne and this Hurricane offense is good enough to march right down the field to get the backdoor cover... and with the way my luck has been going the last three days, that's bound to happen. We get a favorable line and total tonight as I'm expecting a score in the neighborhood of a 31-24 or 34-24 type finish. Too close to the spread and total for me, so that's why I'm teasing it up tonight and both should cash in for us.

    double-dime bet 103 Boise St. -9.5 (-110) Bookmaker.com vs 104 Tulsa

Analysis: The Boise State Broncos at 5-0 are a team that many of the power conference would just please lose a game and go away. Most of the big boys look down their nose at the Broncos but when it came down to it would not eâxactly be tripping over each other to get in line to play them. This season Boise State just continues to win and impress and now have another prime time event to showcase the squad and rack up points. Tulsa, 4-1 and at home might seem the smart play to some but I'm not buying into it. Kellen Moore, quarterback for the Broncos has tossed 13 TD's this season and only 2 picks, he has a firm handle on this offense and runs it in a masterful fashion. Tulsa is led by quarterback G.J Kinne who has some potent weapons in wideouts Demaris Johnson and Slick Shelley. When all is said and done I just cannot see the Golden Hurricane keeping pace with the Broncos. Frankly if this game was just another of many on a typical saturday afternoon I would give Tulsa the better shot at the upset, however Boise State needs all the style points they can muster and an impressive victory in a tough, hostile environment such as Chapman Statdium in Tulsa before a national audience is exactly what they need. I know it seems like a heavy load but I do feel Boise State clears this number.

Chris Jordans small pick for today...
Chris Jordan Wednesday's winner ... Lost last night a 100 star play...He is better in Pro than College. As lang is on Boise, going to watch game..Good Luck...

50? BOISE STATE - These weekday decisions sure do become irritating, but we gotta do it, and we have to keep playing and never break the chain. That's how we become successful. Tonight the better choice is undoubtedly with the Broncos.

This might be the most important game to Boise State, and I expect it to show up with destruction on the brain.

The Broncos, who are 5-0 SU and 4-0 ATS, have dominated most of their opponents. They opened the season with an impressive 19-8 win over Oregon on national television and then shut out Miami-Ohio, 48-0. Then they followed up with road wins over Fresno State (51-34) and Bowling Green (49-14).

But two Saturdays ago, the Broncos hosted Cal Davis. And the final - 34-16 - just doesn't seem right. It's almost as if, Boise was, dare I say it - lazy?!?!?! This is a team that is not only vying for a BCS Bowl Berth, but thinks it should be in the National Championship by finishing in the Top 2.

Well, if the Broncos are to pull off such a feat, they're going to need a blowout win over their last non-conference foe of the season. That would be tonight. That would be against Tulsa.

Boise State's remaining seven opponents come in looking like this: one winning team, one team with a .500 record and five teams with a losing record. Collectively, how's a 16-21 record work for you?

You can see why this game is important.

The fifth-best scoring offense in the nation is going to be on display tonight, and this won't be the first time you've heard this, nor the last, but the Broncos are also a defensive stalwart this season, ranking 14th overall and 13th against the scoreboard.

This is going to be a well-balanced effort from the Broncos, who should win this by a minimum of two touchdowns.

The Golden Hurricanes are a perfect 6-0 ATS in their last 6 home games against a team that has a winning record on the road and they are also 9-1 ATS in their last 10 home games. Grab the points with Tulsa as they keep this game very close Wednesday night and make sure you get on my top NFL picks as my 70% NFL run continues.

I just got 53.5 on this game tonight but as I am typing the line has climbed to what I have posted and even beyond at some books. Combined these two teams average 73 points per game. The Hurricane have 33 of that even though they were shutout by at very good Oklahoma D earlier this year. Over the years Tulsa has been an offensive machine here at home and they have certainly been involved with lot's high scoring affairs with WAC Teams going 11-3-1 OVER their last 15. We know what Boise can do offensively so I will not go into that. Both D's have been relatively good stopping the opposition but I think we have way too much firepower on the field to hold down this number. We will see two very good QB's for this contest and Big Plays are very likely. Take the OVER.

    Today's Pick: TULSA CFB
    Boise State vs. Tulsa
    8:00 EST

For a number of different reasons I feel the value in this game is on the home side: The challenge tonight for Tulsa will be to stop Broncos QB Kellen Moore; however, I feel that Tulsa’s defense, which is ranked No. 1 in Conference USA and has allowed an average of 204 yards per game passing and eight TD's through the air in six games, will be up to the task. The Golden Hurricane have not allowed a rushing TD all season, and in two games, the opposing offense has been held out of the end zone. The offensive line is continuing to improve, which has led to an improved rushing attack. G.J Kinne has passed for 1,142 yards and 10 TD's this year; Jamad Williams, Kinne, and Charles Opeseyitan have combined for 495 yards and 4 TD's on the season. Keep in mind; dating back to last year, not only is Tulas 5-1 SU its last six overall, its also an awesome 13-1 SU its last 14 in front of the hometown crowd.

On the other side of the field: Boise State is perfect thus far, but is off a lackluster effort its last time out vs. UC Davis; one area the Broncos have struggled in this season is in the red zone; out of 27 trips inside the red zone, they have only converted 16 drives into TD's. And their rushing attack has been off and on all year. Boise States defense has been good in first quarters, but then falters down the stretch allowing teams to get back into games and I'm expecting this pattern to continue this evening.

Bottom line: In its four victories this season, teams have averaged only nine points against Tulsa’s 3-3-5 defense, a scheme that has given Boise State headaches in recent years. I said that the key to this game for Tulsa will be to slow down Kellen Moore and the offense; the Hurricanes have shown they are capable of accomplishing this and have recorded 16 sacks to date. They also have 43 tackles for a loss. I believe this line is too high and feel we're getting great value on the large home dog; look for the Broncos to fall to 1-1 ATS as a road favorite of 7 1/2 to 10 points this season as TULSA moves to 2-1 ATS in non-conference games! *10* Tulsa.

When the Golden Hurricane play host to the Broncos in a non-conference clash of non-conference leaders they will do so knowing they are 12-1 SU at home under head coach Todd Graham, including 11 wins in a row. On the flip side, Boise State is just 1-10 ATS as a road favorite off a non-conference win. With that, look for the Hurricane to improve to 8-2 SU and 9-1 ATS at home against a .500 or greater opponent off a win here tonight. Grab the points in this upset maker here tonight. We recommend a 3-unit play on Tulsa.

    Today's Pick: BOISE STATE

    CFB
    Boise State vs. Tulsa
    8:00 EST

It’s not the fact that Tulsa lost to Oklahoma without QB Sam Bradford, it’s how badly they lost (45-0). The Golden Hurricane has an offense very similar to that of Oregon, who put up all of eight points against the Broncos defense. BSU has held three teams to 31 yards rushing or less this season, which will force Tulsa QB Bower to put the ball in the air against an opportunistic defense that forced multiple turnovers in its first four games. Boise State has been a covering machine the past two seasons, recording ATS wins in 12 of its last 14 games. They are 6-0 ATS in the road favorite role and have covered seven straight games off the home blue turf. The Broncos are 15-2 SU all-time vs. C-USA teams, scoring an average of 40 PPG. Simply put, they are the far superior team. Don’t think for a second that the Broncos won’t be taking this game seriously. A win here and its clear sailing to an unbeaten season and BCS bowl berth (possible BCS Title game?). Boise State is our 15* Non-Conference Game of the Week.

OK...Boise St. is everyones play tonight, Vegas just does not give cash away, this is a contrarian play. Look at the numbers and while they favor Boise State, they stats are pretty close. Tulsa was beaten badly by Oklahoma on the road, their only loss. Look at the last 2 years here, and this game has beena tight one, a 3 point game last year in Boise. Tulsa has a capable QB in Kinne and they are 10-1 ATS their last 11 at home. This is Boises States final real test in conference action and simply put, I do not think they walk out of Tulsa withiout a fight. Boise State has RB issues. Although they are the better team, these mid week games are always tough. Tulsa defense is tough against the run and allows just 16 ppg, and Boise St allows just 12. Both teams have explosive offensesw. With an offense that can trade punches and a more than decent defense, and at home, I am grabbing the points.

Play 1 Unit on Tulsa. Thanks and good luck.

6* Widow Wiseguy Boise State/Tulsa ESPN ATS BLOOD BATH on Boise State -9.5(-103 at 5dimes)

The Broncos have been a covering machine this decade, and the odds makers continue to fail to adjust their lines properly. They are 12-2 ATS in all games over the last 2 seasons alone. Boise State is not favored by enough points tonight as they'll crush Tulsa on the road. The Broncos need style points for any chance to be in the National Championship game, and a blowout win over a decent Golden Hurricane team will give them those style points they need. Boise is 7-0 ATS (+7.0 Units) in road games after a win by 17 or more points over the last 2 seasons. Boise is 6-0 ATS (+6.0 Units) in road games after allowing 125 or less rushing yards in 2 straight games over the last 3 seasons. The Broncos are 6-0 ATS (+6.0 Units) after a game where they committed 1 or less turnovers over the last 2 seasons. THe Broncos are 7-0 ATS (+7.0 Units) in road games after 3 consecutive game where they committed 1 or less turnovers since 1992. Boise is 7-0 ATS (+7.0 Units) in road games over the last 2 seasons. That's a 33-0 ATS Angle backing the Broncos tonight. This team just plays the game the right way. They are outscoring opponents by 26 points/game behind a balanced attack on offense that rushes for 192 yards/game and throws for 248 yards/game. Tulsa has played a very easy shedule, with the exception of a road game at Oklahoma where they lost 45-0. Boise is the same caliber team as the Sooners with a defense that can shut down this Tulsa offense. It's inevitable that the Broncos run away with this one by game's end. Take Boise State and lay the points.

These teams are struggling, and the reason is obvious: defense. Minnesota is off two straight losses, giving up 10 goals. Anaheim has given up 14 goals in 5 games. The defense collapsed the last game, giving up 3 goals in the 3rd period of a loss at the Rangers. Look for an offensive show in southern California,

Boise State is known for their high scoring offense, but the Broncos are a great team because they have a very good defense. That unit started the season by shutting down a good Oregon attack and the Broncos have allowed just 4.5 yards per play in 5 games to a schedule of teams that would combine to average 5.2 yppl against an average team. That unit should control an overrated Tulsa offense that has scored a lot of points on bad defensive teams but was shutout by Oklahoma - the only good defensive team that they've faced. Boise isn't as good as Oklahoma defensively, but Tulsa actually rates as a worse than average offense after adjusting for opposing defenses faced. The Hurricanes have averaged only 5.4 yppl in 4 games against Division 1A teams that would combine to allow 5.8 yppl to an average team. Boise State has allowed 4.4 yppl or less in 4 of their 5 games (only a potent Fresno State team had more) and my math model projects just 4.3 yppl for Tulsa in this game.

Tulsa, while not as good as perceived offensively, is better than most people think defensively. the Hurricanes have allowed just 4.6 yppl in their 4 D-1A games to teams that would average 4.9 yppl against an average defense. That unit will defend Boise's rushing attack well, as the Broncos rate as just average running the ball without D.J. Harper in the lineup (he's missed the last two games and is out for the season). Jeremy Avery is still a good back, but new #2 back Doug Martin is a big step down from Harper. While Boise's rushing attack may stall against a good Tulsa run defense (3.6 yprp allowed to teams that would average 4.6 yprp against an average team) the Broncos' Kellen Moore (8.7 yards per pass play against teams that would allow 5.9 yppp to an average QB) should have his usual strong outing against a mediocre Tulsa pass defense that's allowed just 5.4 yppp but to quarterbacks that would combine to average just 5.2 yppp against an average defense.

Boise has pretty big edges regardless of which team has the ball and my math model gives the Broncos a very good 57% chance of covering the spread in this game. However, Tulsa applies to a very strong 49-10-2 ATS home underdog momentum situation that is 9-0 ATS since I discovered it. Boise, meanwhile, applies to a negative 34-86-4 ATS road letdown situation and Tulsa has a 59% chance of covering a fair line based on the situations. Overall, Tulsa is about a 52% play and the under looks like a pretty good play.
