    THE SPORTS ADVISORS

    MONDAY, AUGUST 17

    NFL PRESEASON

    Jacksonville at Miami

The Dolphins and Jaguars meet in August for the seventh consecutive year, this time in the preseason opener for both squads at Landshark Stadium.

Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said No. 1 quarterback David Garrard will play the first quarter and “maybe a little more.” He added that the other two QBs on the roster – second-stringer Todd Bouman and rookie Paul Smith – will also see action.

Tony Sparano, entering his second season as Miami’s coach, said veteran Chad Pennington will start under center tonight with second-year pro Chad Henne slated to play the middle two quarters. Rookie Pat White will take over after Henne departs.

The Jags went 3-1 SU in the preseason for the fourth straight year in 2008 and the fifth time in Del Rio’s six years with the team. Jacksonville split its four preseason contests against the number in 2008, but is still 8-4 ATS over the past three summers, including 5-1 SU and ATS on the road. Also, the Jags have been a profitable preseason pup since 2002, going 9-3 ATS.

Like the Jags, Miami won three of its four exhibition contests a year ago (3-1 ATS) and has split its two preseason home games each of the last six years (5-8-1 ATS). The Dolphins are just 2-4-1 ATS in their last seven as a preseason chalk.

Jacksonville is 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS in its last four preseason openers, the only loss being an 18-17 setback at Miami as a 1½-point road favorite in 2007. Meanwhile, that was the Dolphins’ only Week 1 victory over the past four summers (1-2-1 ATS). Miami also defeated Jacksonville 19-14 as a 3½-point road underdog last year and is 3-1 SU and ATS in the last four August meetings with the Jags.

Miami has stayed under the total in five straight preseason games, including all four last year. Conversely, the Jags have topped the total in 11 of 16 preseason games since 2005.

    ATS ADVANTAGE: JACKSONVILLE

    Carolina at N.Y. Giants

The Panthers look to open the preseason with a victory for the ninth straight year when they head to the Meadowlands to battle the Giants.

Carolina coach John Fox said QB Jake Delhomme and the rest of his starters will play “about a quarter.” Josh McCown will replace Delhomme, followed by third-stringer Matt Moore and possibly Hunter Cantwell.

New York coach Tom Coughlin said he expects his starters, including QB Eli Manning to be on the field for 12 to 15 plays, perhaps even the entire first quarter. Coughlin added that he hopes his other three QBs see action, but expect at least David Carr and second-year pro Andre Woodson to get work, with Rhett Bomar being fourth off the bench if time permits.

The Panthers are 17-7 in preseason action since 2003 (14-10 ATS) and a perfect 8-0 SU in exhibition openers going back to 2001 (5-2-1 ATS). On the downside, Carolina dropped both of its preseason roadies last year (1-1 ATS), and they’re 3-5 ATS on the highway the last three summers.

The Giants, like Carolina, split their four exhibition games last year (2-1-1 ATS), but they went 2-0 SU and ATS in the Meadowlands. In fact, New York is 6-2 SU and ATS in designated preseason home games since Coughlin took over in 2004, and it has also cashed in five straight August games as a favorite. However, the Giants have dropped consecutive preseason openers, including a 24-21 loss to the Panthers as a one-point home favorite in 2007.

The under is 8-4 in New York’s last 12 summer affairs.

    ATS ADVANTAGE: CAROLINA and UNDER

    NATIONAL LEAGUE

    St. Louis (67-52) at L.A. Dodgers (70-48)

The red-hot Cardinals open a seven-game road trip by sending ace Chris Carpenter (12-3, 2.27 ERA) to the hill in Los Angeles against the Dodgers’ Charlie Haeger (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who will be making just the second start of his career.

St. Louis, currently atop the N.L. Central by 4½ games, has won eight of its last nine and wrapped up a 5-1 homestand with Sunday’s 7-5, walk-off win over the Padres. The Cardinals have won 12 of their last 13 series openers, seven of eight against the N.L. West, four of five on the road and six of seven when a right-handed starter is on the mound.

The struggling Dodgers have seen their lead in the N.L. West close to five games over the Rockies as they have dropped six of nine overall. They did beat the Diamondbacks 9-3 on Sunday to finish a six-game road trip at 3-3. Los Angeles is also on slides of 2-5 against the N.L. Central and 1-4 at home.

The Redbirds are on a 37-17 roll against Los Angeles, including taking eight of the last 11 meetings at Dodger Stadium.

Carpenter has been outstanding lately for the Cardinals, winning seven straight decisions and going seven or more innings in six straight starts. On Wednesday at home, he held the Reds to two runs in seven innings of a 5-2 victory. Carpenter has won three of his last four road starts where he’s 5-2 with a 2.69 ERA for the season. He is also 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA in five career starts against the Dodgers, including a seven-inning effort on July 27 when he allowed just one run in seven innings of a 6-1 victory.

Haeger started 22 games for Triple-A Albuquerque earlier this season, but this is just his second in the major leagues, with his first coming in 2006 as a member of the White Sox. The last time he pitched in the majors was in 2008 with the Padres when he appeared in four games and allowed 10 runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief work.

St. Louis is on several “under” runs, including 7-3 in series openers, 9-3 on Mondays, 8-4 against the N.L. West and 5-3-2 against right-handed starters. Los Angeles has topped the total in nine of its last 13 at home and four of five at home against winning teams. Finally, the “under” is on a 4-1 run in this series.

    ATS ADVANTAGE: ST. LOUIS

Game: Jacksonville at Miami (Monday 8/17 7:30 PM Eastern)
    Pick: 3 units on Jacksonville +3 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

One of the most successful coaches in terms of playing to win in the NFL-X has been Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio. Del Rio has posted a 17-7 mark over the last six preseasons, and has not had a losing year with five of the six seasons finishing at 3-1! This year he has no reason to change that. In fact, his job is on the line this year so if anything, there's more reason for him to put a gloss on things. Tony Sparano lost his opener a year ago then won the next three. But he may have a different agenda this season as he needed to instill a winning culture at Miami in his initial season at the helm. The Dolphins are off an 11-5 season, and this one will be used to do more evaluating than winning. Getting a field goal on a strong preseason coach like Del Rio is a gift. I'll go with Jacksonville here.

Monday's play 10 Dime -- BRAVES (Hanson) -1 1/2 runs over Diamondbacks (Scherzer)

    BRAVES
NOTE: List only Hanson as Atlanta's starting pitcher

Atlanta had won five straight before falling 4-1 to Philadelphia on Sunday night, and has been playing extremely well since the All-Star break. While Arizona has been playing good ball lately also, the Braves catch the Diamondbacks at a good time today.

Arizona had to travel to Atlanta from Los Angeles, where they played a weekend series against the Dodgers, and then has to travel to Philadelphia after today's game, which is being played due to a May 17 rainout.

I don't expect the Diamondbacks to be sharp in their one-game layover, especially facing Braves rookie Tommy Hanson (7-2, 3.05 ERA), who has posted a 2.53 ERA in his last 11 starts.

The 22-year-old right-hander allowed one run and seven hits with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday against Washington, and is 4-1 in six home starts. He has allowed no more than two earned runs in three of his past four outings.

The Diamondbacks will start Max Scherzer (7-6, 3.94), who bounced back from two poor outings to beat the Mets in his last game Tuesday, allowing two runs and eight hits with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Scherzer is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in four games (two starts) against Atlanta. He allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings on May 31 in his last outing vs. the Braves.

Atlanta again will be without center fielder and leadoff man Nate McLouth, who is nursing a sore left hamstring, but that shouldn't keep the Braves from jumping all over the Diamondbacks today. Take Atlanta on the run line.

What bettors need to know: Monday's preseason action
    By DAVID JONES

Jacksonville Jaguars at Miami Dolphins (-3, 31.5)

    Starter and injury report

The Jaguars take their first steps towards erasing the memories of a disappointing 2008 campaign on Monday. With some youthful additions to the offensive line and a veteran star on board at wide receiver, Jacksonville is hoping to resemble the squad that defeated the Steelers at Pittsburgh in the 2007 playoffs.

The Jags tabbed a pair of offensive linemen with their initial two picks in April's draft. Unfortunately, first-rounder Eugene Monroe was just inked to a deal earlier this week. He has some catching up to do and is unlikely to play against the Dolphins. Second-rounder Eben Britton of Arizona is already making a push to win the starting right tackle spot.

For the first time since the days of Keenan McCardell and Jimmy Smith, Jacksonville has an elite wide receiver to throw the ball to. Torry Holt's 817 receptions lead the NFL in this decade but there are some questions about how much the 33-year-old has left in the tank.

Head coach Jack Del Rio has indicated that starting QB David Garrard will play the entire first quarter and possibly some of the second against Miami. Garrard will be followed in the contest by veteran Todd Bauman and former Tulsa standout Paul Smith.

The Dolphins will try to quiet skeptics who suggest that Miami will not be able to repeat its success from a year ago. The Fish led the NFL in turnover ratio (+17) in 2009 which helped the club pull out some close calls. In their 9-1 run to end the regular season, the Dolphins recorded only one double-digit victory.

The home fans will get their first look at rookie QB Pat White on Monday. Head coach Tony Sparano said that White and No. 2 quarterback Chad Henne will get significant playing time against the Jags after starter Chad Pennington exits the game.

    Line Movement

The Dolphins opened as a 3-point favorite with a total of 32. The total is now down to 31.5.

    Trends

Del Rio is 17-7 (15-9 against the spread) in the preseason with a 3-3 ATS mark in preseason openers. Sparano went 3-1 (3-1 ATS) in the 2008 preseason but lost in the exhibition opener.

    Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 91 degrees with a 30 percent chance of rain in Miami.

Carolina Panthers at New York Giants (-3, 32.5)

    Starter and injury report

These two clubs were expected to square off at Giants Stadium in the 2008 NFC Championship game, but the top two seeds in the conference were humbled at home in the Divisional round.

Carolina is basically returning the same squad that captured the NFC South. The defense took a hit up front with defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu suffering a season-ending Achilles injury. On offense, WR Steve Smith and RB Jonathan Stewart are questionable for Monday night's matchup with some minor injuries.

Despite a dreadful effort in last year's post-season exit to the Cardinals, veteran Jake Delhomme is the clear No.1 under center. The backup spot is open for competition between journeyman Josh McCown and youngster Matt Moore. Rookie Hunter Cantwell out of Louisville could also get some late game snaps at the QB spot against New York.

The Giants have a mix of good and bad news entering their preseason opener. The good revolves around the return of star defensive end Osi Umenyiora to the fold after missing all of last season with due to injury. The bad involves questions about New York's ability to find a suitable replacement for wideout Plaxico Burress.

New York hopes that first round draft pick Hakeem Nicks can help to fill some of the void at wide receiver this season.

For Monday's exhibition opener, head coach Tom Coughlin has said that this starters will get about 12-15 snaps against Carolina. Rookie signal-callers Andre Woodson and Rhett Bomar are also will play following the exits of Eli Manning and David Carr.

The secondary is a little banged up for New York. Cornerbacks Corey Webster and Aaron Ross will be held out of the game due to some minor injuries.

    Line Movement

The Giants opened as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 33.5. The total has dropped a point down to 32.5.

    Trends

John Fox is 18-10 (15-12-1 ATS) in the preseason with a 5-2 ATS record in his August openers. As head coach of the Giants, Coughlin is 11-9 (11-7-2 ATS) in preseason action with a 1-3-1 ATS mark in exhibition debuts.

    Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 89 degrees in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Travel would seem to point towards the home team, but in reality both of these clubs had rather long trips to get here, and since their game was rained out early and the Padres played late (also du to rain) it is likely that the Cubs were there earlier than the Padres, so actually Chicago in a better travel spot here. Also, Cubbies have gone 11-2 in their last 13 games against losing teams while the Friars are 3-12 in thier last 15 against teams with winning records, and that includes last night's heartbreaking loss. Minnesota Twins vs Texas Rangers

    Pick: Texas -130 (4 units)

After yesterday’s win over Boston the Rangers currently hold a ½ game lead of the AL Wildcard race over the Red Sox. They open a 4 game series tonight versus Minnesota. The Twins have struggled as of late, dropping 11 of their past 15 contests and have a poor road record of 23-34. The Rangers send Tommy Hunter (5-2, 2.26) to the mound. Hunter’s numbers speak for themselves. The Rangers are 4-1 in his last 5 starts and 4-1 in his last 5 starts of a series opener. He will be facing Francisco Liriano (5-11, 5.39) who managed to get his first win since July 4th last Wednesday versus Kansas City. I like the Rangers in this one because they are playing at home where they are 39-22 this season and are in the heat of a playoff race. Additionally, Texas is 13-3 in their last 16 contests as a favorite and 9-0 in their last 9 as a home favorite. Minnesota is 1-5 in their last 6 versus a team with a winning record.

    Lay 4 units on Texas.

MLB: Minnesota Twins at Texas Rangers - Rangers (Liriano/Hunter) -130
    Game Date: 8/17/2009
Note: There are a lot of ways to win at Baseball handicapping and while I certainly do not win every game I play, I always feel that I am putting myself in the best situation to do so. Baseball is a finesse sport and that means that regardless of how good you handicap the result of a contest, shit is going to happen sometimes. We are putting ourselves in the best situation tonight with Texas hosting the Minnesota Twins. First and foremost is the fact that Texas has the second best Home Money Won Stats of all teams in Major League Baseball over the last 12 years, just behind the Rockies. The reason is a simple one. This park at Arlington is quite different than any other in the AL and Texas is Taylormade to suit it. Once again this year, they are showing us why that is true with a 39-22 record here. They also just happen to strike lefties well here with a 20-7 Mark verses these guys in their last 27 played here. Liriano has thrown well verses the Rangers but he is not throwing so well right now save for a nice performance verses the Royals. He has struggled greatly on the road and low and behold the Twins have as well. Minnesota has only a glimmer of hope left for the playoffs and it is showing recently, losing their last two series to the lowly Indians and Royals. Texas is going to be eating at home today, they are going to have plenty of rest, and most will have the comfort of their loved one's waiting on them hand and foot. Twins will not have that and have enjoyed only those complimentary peanuts offered by the airline. Hunter has proven to be a quality Major League Starter, he is throwing well, he is throwing well here and he will have the advantage of throwing at the Twins for the first time. Let's lay this number, which is at bit high, but I think well worth the risk.

St. Louis Cardinals (67-52) at Los Angeles Dodgers (70-48)
    (R) Chris Carpenter (12-3) vs. (R) Charlie Haeger (0-0)

Go with the hot Cardinals with their ace Chris Carpenter on the hill versus the Dodgers. St. Louis has won 19 of the last 25 games against the Dodgers and eight of the last 11 against them at Dodger Stadium. To boot, Carpenter is 7-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his last eight starts and is 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA in five career starts against Los Angeles. The struggling LA Dodgers are 3-6 in their last 9 games, 1-4 its last 5 at home and will counter with Charlie Haeger. The right-hander had a 16.62 ERA in four relief appearances with San Diego in 2008 and went 11-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 22 starts with Triple-A Albuquerque this season. He makes his season debut tonight for Los Angeles.
