Disappointing news. Let a masterpiece breathe for once, but understand Sanada pursuing the opportunity for Japanese actors and culture.
FX does enough good television that i'll give them the benefit of the doubt and will give the sequel a chance but i was very happy with it being a mini-series. and personally, at no point of the show was i wanting to watch a big battle.
I'll give Sanada the benefit of the doubt to make whatever story they try to tell a badass and very authentic one. He's definitely earned it.
Dark still the GOAT foreign language series imo. Also an argument for GOAT series regardless of language.
almost a sweep. best Drama, best actor, best actress, best directing, best guest actor. Tadanobu Asano (Yabushige) didn't win and Moeka Hoshi (Fuji) wasn't nominated but otherwise they cleaned house. hugely important wins for a number of reasons, should open the doors between the US and Japan for more actors/actresses and potential shows. really happy for Sanada, seems like amazing 11th hour career validation. he's been a terrific actor for a long time and finally got put in the right vehicle to be recognized. Anna Sawai was a gift, she was dynamite every single episode. e: 18 Emmy wins, a new record.
Hoshi not even getting a nomination while three people from the same show did blew my mind. she was every bit as good as Sawai. there wasn't a bit of bad acting in that entire show. I had a bad feeling about Asano not winning, though, his nom felt the most vulnerable. btw they tried to play Sanada off after the Best Drama win and he started speaking Japanese and they stopped lmao
Especially with that shit ass show Morning Show getting the W, I love Crudup but there’s no comparison. Insane that that show got so many nominations. Asano was incredible
Haven't read the thread, but very interested in watching. Curious, is there much sex and nudity? Thanks ...
So I just binged this, great show. I will say, the over-arcing storyline of the main 3-4 characters (or who they're based on) followed history almost exactly to a T, obviously with some color and character development worked in there. Wonder how they will continue the show since Torinaga's basis has a pretty clear story arc.
Hopefully they can bring in a teenage Miyamoto Musashi in some way. They will need to take some liberties but he was alive during the Showgun time period.
Just finished last night, thought it was great. The Emmy award winners who played Toranaga and Mariko were very well deserving. The other guy. I thought it was especially great was the guy who played Yabushige or as I referred to him, the comic relief guy ...
Was just thinking about T saying that to Y at the end and how it struck me as callous. T clearly had spies everywhere. Thanks for posting this, helps to make sense of it ...
swept SAG as well. ensemble award, stunt ensemble, outstanding male (Sanada) and outstanding female (Sawai). only loss was Asano but he lost to Sanada as SAG only does supporting actor awards for film and not television. the show is in rarified air as far as popular and critical acclaim goes for one season shows. you can make legitimate arguments for this season against any other single season of television ever.
So where is the source material coming from for this? There's no adapting anymore, someone has to write it.
Shogun is loosely based on real history/people. They just have to continue it. Lots of material of them to mine wrt setting up and solidifying the Shogunate
Based on events and persons but Clavell created the story. I hope it's great but it will depend on the writers imo, and they have a lot larger task than season 1.
it'll certainly involve the raising of Edo castle and see the change of power in Japan go from Kyoto to Edo (Tokyo). he's also the foundation of a new shogunate that will rule Japan for nearly 300 years so a lot of it will undoubtedly be about that and the balancing of power between all the daimyo (feudal lords). he also boots Christianity out because he's concerned about its ulterior motives in being in Japan so the stuff with the Portuguese will play a role. I imagine it will end with him abdicating to give way to his son as the second shogun. if I just had to guess, the main theme will probably be about his later life where he basically had to go around making sure the daimyo would be loyal to him so they will probably invent some rebel daimyo to be the antagonists. Anjin will probably continue to wage his own personal war against the Portuguese and ultimately succeed in their removal, likely because the Portuguese back the rebelling daimyo. idk, something along those lines seems most likely. most of his late life was politicking as opposed to war so they're going to have to get creative to still get some battle scenes here and there.
