  1. It's actually called the Burj Khalifa in honor of the UAE president for bailing out Dubai during the crash.

    Haha classic.

dabutracing/bayou: What do you guys do that you get to travel so much? I was thinking military or some shit, no?

  3. Don't know about bayou but I'm a contractor. Don't really travel that much just through Dubai every few months either on my way home or way back to Iraq. Guess I could travel more on my breaks but I just always end up coming home.

Very nice. I get to get to SE Asia once a year, but have never been able to get to Dubai. Definitely want to get there though.

  6. It's definitely worth a visit. We've had a few guys spend their breaks there and they come back broke as shit (mainly from the hookers). Last time we took a cab from the mall back to our hotel and it was a damn big body brand new lexus and was the same price as a regular old toyota cab.

Tribune Tower in Chicago is pretty fucking cool and the collected bricks embedded in the lower levels are very fascinating.

I have been leading the implementation of a new application in our company for the past couple of years so that's why I have traveled so much domestically and to Germany (where our global HDQ are). Plus my wife and I travel all over the world on vacations. This India thing is new because now that the project is coming to an end we're outsourcing the data maintenance. Going to have to spend a couple of multi-week stints in Mumbai over this summer, and then I'll have to go a couple of times a year after that. Dubai was just a throw in because I flew Emirates last week and had a short layover. BTW if you ever get a chance to fly Business or First Class on Emirates I highly recommend it. It is so choice. Everything but the mini-giraffe.

So, i'm sure you all remember the rotating tower in Dubia. Construction was supposed to be completed in late 2010 and they haven't even started...

Also, the architect is full of shit "Fisher distributed a biography which said he received an honorary doctorate from "The Prodeo Institute at Columbia University in New York". No such institution exists, however, and Columbia said it had never awarded Fisher an honorary degree. Fisher acknowledges that he is not well known, has never built a skyscraper before and hasn't practiced architecture regularly in decades."

So its possible it will never be built

  12. I used to want to visit India until that website about much of a shit hole it is. I would never go there after reading it.

I work with a bunch of guys from Nepal and I'm definitely going to visit there. It's so freaking cheap to go there and they told me a brick of smoke is like $100 US lol.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakheel_Tower

It got approved, but seems to be killed as of now. Would have been the tallest in the world pretty easily from the sounds (although the architect wouldn't ever disclose height so others wouldn't overtake it, or they could extend the height).

    3 ) Aerium – Brandenburg, Germany

Floor Area: 70,000 m² (753,000 sq ft)

Volume: 5.2 million m³ (184 million cu ft)

A hangar originally intended to the construction of a giant airship, this building now an indoor, artificial tropical resort. Though it’s third on the list by volume, Aerium is the largest single hall without supporting pillars in the world. The Aerium is a €78 million freestanding steel-dome “barrel-bowl” structure built to house the construction of a giant airship—the CL160. Though a considerable amount of design and development work was undertaken, the airship was never built. The Aerium is now called Tropical Islands Resort, an artificial tropical resort which houses the said to be world’s largest tropical indoor pool and the world’s largest indoor waterpark. It was bought by a Malaysian company for €17.5 million and turned into a resort with man-made tropical habitat complete with rain forest, beach, artificial sun and clouds and even bird soundtrack.

This thing does have some legs and is a "serious" proposal. Will it ever be built, who knows.

Amazing part is the flying-buttress towers on the side of the building that help anchor the design.....are as tall as the Eiffel Tower.

  43. I would definitely do Nepal. Supposedly you can do a visit there for as little as $10 a day US if you stay at local hotels and eat local food. That and the pictures I've see make it seem absolutely beautiful.

And yes, Dubai is a fucked up social situation. This dude I work with knows a girl there that lives ina 3 bedroom apartment with 5 other girls (two per room) in not a nice area of town. They all have day time retail jobs, and are all hookers at night just to make ends meet.
