Had a creme Brulee milkshake tonight. Shared it with my one year old.. He claps and flaps his arms after every sip.
My daughter is 5 months old and starting to smile every time she sees me. Melts my heart with that big gummy smile every time
My hip is killing me right now but it’s because I’ve ridden over 160 miles so far this month and 100 this week. So it means I’m alive and am still in really good shape. I’ll stretch and use my massage gun I know I’m blessed to be able to move without pain. Most of the pain I deal with is from working out and not from old age. I’m on the last stage of life and have two grandkids and it’s amazing.
A horse pooped on my foot today I’m seeing my beloved Arsenal in a week maybe our most important player is a rapist but good vibes only
In spite of being really disheartened by all of the flails arms wildly and generally having a dim view of most things, I was doing some phone storage cleanup/organizing and realized I've had some wild fun over the last year and a half or so and lived quite frivolously all things considered. There was one stretch of photo/video where I reminded myself after initial skepticism that yes - I had in fact spent all night in SF watching musical heros shred before doing the exact same thing in NYC the very next night - and tbqh that had happened multiple times.
Three years ago I lost a job I loved dearly because the company’s stock price took a dip. Fast forward three years, I’ve tripled my salary, bought a new place, and am in the increasingly small group of Gen Xers that might get to retire before my body turns heel on me.
Had my mom and dad over for her 60th birthday and watched both of them hold my 3 week old tonight. They have been over a bunch already in said time but a special night indeed
That’s fucking amazing. I need to get back into the saddle (have read very little over the last couple of years). Out of curiosity, Is this strictly reading? Reading and audio book mix? Mostly audio books?
All hard books, fiction novels. T-shirts sweatshirts and books make up about 90% of my possessions right now ha
Nice. I know you’re a big Cormac guy because of your name. What other authors are you into? Personally, Vonnegut is my dude when it comes to American fiction.
I really need to read more Vonnegut. Outside Slaughterhouse Five I'm not sure I've actually read anything but short stories back in school Outside McCarthy... Older/established or deceased types Annie Proulx James Salter Carson McCullers John Banville Walker Percy Don DeLillo Contemporary authors who've gotten into my top tier in the past year Sebastian Barry Sally Rooney Jane Smiley Jennifer Egan Jesmyn Ward I'm feeling like Irish authors >>> lately so looking to get into Colum McCann, Anne Enright and Colm Tóibín
FYI: don't lower your egg. Use skim milk powder rather than evaporated milk. After churning, get that product into the coldest freezer you can as quickly as you can. Any ice cream straight out of a churn is going to have the consistency of soft serve, need the COLDCOLDCOLD to finish the job. Also, once you have the product up to 170 degrees on the stove, hold it there for twenty to thirty minutes for best protein denaturing. This is all for the sake of texture and keeping ice crystals to a minimum for longer term storage (a week or two). It will also give you a luxurious dense beast of an ice cream. Or just do what you've been doing.
How do you feel about Doctorow? Ragtime blew me away. Same for McEwan's "Amsterdam". Love Ian McEwan.
Thanks for the recs. Outside of DeLillo I haven’t heard of any of these people. Will have to scope them out. I will, however, posit that Russian authors are the best there is in the medium.
I wasn't really a fan of Welcome to Hard Times and Loon Lake. But then read World's Fair, which was pretty amazing and a clear example of his excellence. I've got Ragtime on a shelf and have never read it. Billy Bathgate too Also really liked Amsterdam and want to check out more McEwan. Booker Prize winners are basically must-reads
You've read more Doctorow than me. The level of detail that he uses is astounding and I can only imagine how much research went into each book. Makes you feel like you're standing in the era that he's writing about. To your point, I keep a spreadsheet of major book award winners and cross them off as I go. Did Wolf Hall last year which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Recently finished Lonesome Dove and Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny which were both excellent. Once you start reading those authors that are/were regularly shortlisted for awards you start to see, in stark terms, the degree of craft relative to pulpier fiction.
Quit my job a little over a month ago. My only plan at the time was to take some time off and figure out what direction I wanted to go. Well about 4 days into being jobless I decided to take a shot and start my own business. Here’s hoping I can be the man instead of working for him.
I'm getting to enjoy the midwest summer thunderstorms after living in the PNW for three years where I heard thunder once.
I have a two year old great niece that laughs every time I’m around. I pick her up and swing her and she just loves it. Makes my day.
The muscle relaxers were because sleeping for 84% of two days on a couch refucked my back. The dab is just how life be sometimes.
Took one of my kids and his best friend to sushi last night to celebrate their 20th birthdays (six days apart). They've been best friends since kindergarten, and it's been fun watching them grow up together. We've become good friends with his parents too, and we all had a good time last night talking about the last 15 years and then embarrassing the boys by having the Shogun waitresses sing Happy Birthday to them
Most days when I come home from work one of my cats will greet me by running to jump on the top of cat tree to roll around getting pets and meowing a bunch. If she is hiding because she is scared of a storm or is baking in the sun in the window she won't though. Other than that, when she sees me she jumps on that tree.
Get to drink good beers with no judgment, fish with my dad and son, pull my kids and extended family on tubes and wake boards, my kids get to play baseball, swim, and fish off the dock with their cousins, and we rarely discuss politics. It’s just super.
Moving Day today, yeah that was the apartment our client’s brother had, but they wouldn’t renew the lease, so we had to scramble with just under two months to find a new place to rent.
Lost my keys on the morning of the 4th. Found them today after the locksmith called to say he was on his way. So I had to cancel his trip and luckily avoid a stupid tax of about $300-$400. Spoiler Been staying at my friend's house where my car is parked. Thankful for WFH and having my backpack. Locksmith was on his way this morning. I took off down the long driveway to meet him at the road. Found them sitting dead center of the gravel driveway 30-50 yards or so down the hill from the house. I must have set them on the bumper of a friend's car before she left. She had just handed me the keys maybe 60-90 seconds prior. I decided I needed something from her car's trunk and lost focus. #stupidshityourboyfrienddoes
