Soup bought me an Ernie Banks signed Jersey for secret santa. I have tons of balls signed by cub players and a game used signed kerry wood bat. 3 footballs signed by the 94 ,95 ,97 huskers entire squad. Bunch of iverson stuff as well .

I might have some cards that I didn’t sell at my place. I do know I’ve got some mid 2000s Bowman Chrome boxes at my mom’s. No clue if they are worth much now. Fucked around one summer when I was home from college and bought stuff trying to speculate on rookies. Best card I pulled then was a Teixiera numbered SP (I think) rookie that I then got BGS graded live at a show. Ended up getting a 9.5, was really hoping for a 10. Got shitty offers at the show for it and then sold it on eBay for a decent amount. That bought 15-20 cases of Natty Light that next fall.

Out in my garage is a bat that was game-used (its splintered) by Jose Castillo of the Pittsburgh Pirates who died in a car wreck in Venezuela yesterday.

    I'll listen to all offers.

Thanks to this thread, I’ll be rooting through my parents’ attic next time I’m at their place. I’ve got a lot of late 80s/early 90s stuff. What got me into cards was when i stumbled upon a cardboard box in the back of my parents closet. In it, was my dad’s collection from the late 50s/early 60s..hundreds of baseball and basketball...Mantle, Mays, Banks, the whole 1961 Fleer basketball set w/multiples of Chamberlain, West, Robertson rookies. Many a weekend was spent cataloguing our collections with the help of Beckett magazines. Most valuable cards got put in hard plastic cases. Other stuff was arranged a million different ways in various binders. One Christmas, I got this giant card board box that looked like a trunk or something. In it, it held long cardboard boxes that third and forth tier cards were kept.
One of the cooler cards I got was a 1994 Stadium Club Houston Rockets futures card. Basically, as Houston had more success (Division champs, Conference champs, World Champs) I got progressively better prizes, including special limited edition cards. Eventually, I got a whole set with some special seal on each. It’s probably worth $12 now.

I’m now excited to go to my parents in a few weeks so I can grab all my old binders of cards and bring them home. Haven’t gone through them in years. I know I’ve got some solid basketball stuff, hopefully a few hidden gems.

One of the card shops I went to as a kid is still around. They were a tad pricey and not as cool as the main shop I went to. Main shop’s son was a hockey card guy like me and a few friends. He always had a good selection.

I still remember buying boxes from Charm City Cards out of Maryland as those guys usually had some of best prices on the internet.

This thread really makes me want to drop a couple hundred and buy a bunch of boxes and open them.

Back in the day we used Beckett to price things. What's the method these days to casually check the value of cards? I have a ton starting in mid 70s to early 90s and wouldn't mind checking some value

I have unopened packs of 1985 and 1986 Topps cards, that I bought in those years and did not open because I saw a pack of 1958 cards at a show selling for $50.

My dad has tons of awesome cards —- two Barry Bonds rookie cards, Roberto Clemente rookie card, and one of those Mark McWire rookie cards that was all the rage during the early 2000s

I have some cool stuff. Signed LBJ ball, ‘97 Augusta Chronicle signed by Tiger Woods, tons of signed boxing gloves because they’re so cheap

Also tons of stuff that ended up being bunk — Curtis Enis signed rookie card, Mo Peterson game used Raptors jersey, Trent Richardson signed ball, etc

Have a ton of basketball, baseball, football cards at my parents. Last I remember was having Kobe's rookies when I was about 12-13, then I stopped collecting. Mom and dad would buy me a box of packs to open each Christmas growing up. I'm about to order a box now to open up for nostalgia

You're from socal right? Back in the early nineties they had a ton of free mall card shows in orange county, that my dad took us to. They always had a guy signing free autographs too. Usually they were local guys and weren't big popular guys, but still exciting as a kid. They had Jim Edmonds signing once when he was a rookie and hadn't blown up yet. Chad Curtis too....who is now in prison for being a sexual predator. I remember him asking me about the card he was signing for me because he collected cards too.

1985 was a good year, there wasn't shit in that 1986 set. I use to buy boxes of 1986 Topps at Costco for like $10, doubt they'd even be worth that now.

I have one if the Fleers, but not the greatest condition (including a small wrinkle in one of the corners), would probably be like around a 6 if I ever got it graded, so not even sure if it’s worth getting it graded.

Speaking of grading, did anybody else buy some graded cards from non PSA or BGS on the cheap and break them open to get the good ones regraded by PSA or BGS?

That whole grading thing was a total fucking scam, right from jump street.

I had a solid 1971 Topps Roberto Clemente. The set is notorious for poor grades because its literally an all black background and the slightest imperfection will stick out like a sore thumb.

So I take this card to a show near Philadelphia and there's several grading companies there. BGS, PSA, I think SGC was there too. So I go to the BGS people and this fat old man is there working for them and he's coming off as a total douche but it was whatever. He looks at me with a straight face and says something like "the grading fee is $40, I think its a solid 7.5, but for $60 cash it may be an 8.5". I said thanks and walked away.

These are the dickheads that ruined the hobby.

I have a couple signed baseballs and basketballs, but best thing I personally have is a warmup jersey signed by all the 2000-2001 Lakers. My Dad has a great collection though. Grew up in New York a big Yankee fan so he has Mantle and Maris signed game used bats, a yogi berra signed home plate, but the gem is a game used Babe Ruth bat from 1926 that you can pull out and swing. Its amazing how heavy it is. The story is at the time guys would only get a handful of bats for the year and had to make them last so there’s a piece of the bat that broke and is literally nailed back into place so it could be reused. Also has a signed check from Ruth to the bat company.

Never really been much of a collector, but I have a few different random autographs. I went to A&M and have some random A&M autographs like John David Crow (A&M's only Heisman winner until Johnny), Von Miller, Mike Evans. My dad is from Chicago and gifted me some of his old autographs like William Perry, Richard Dent, Mike Singletary, and Gale Sayers. He played basketball at JUCO in the 70s and was a huge Bob Knight fan, so I have a few of those too.

Two weeks ago I'm over at my girlfriend's parents house watching some games. Her dad has two daughters and no sons, so he and I watch football games together most saturdays and sundays. He asks me to come downstairs to his basement and tells me to take whatever I want. Trying to explain just how much stuff he has, but the entire basement is floor to ceiling autographed memorabilia. Jerseys, helmets, basketballs, footballs, baseballs, hockey pucks, posters. Again, not knowing much about collecting I'm not sure on the value, but I have to imagine it's an easy 6 figure collection. They are converting the basement into a bedroom for his mom because she has alzheimers and can't live on her own any more.

Didn't really know how to handle the situation and felt uncomfortable just taking things. After a while we worked through some of the items and I now own the following autographed pieces. Everything has a COA too.

    Phil Jackson/Michael Jordan floor board
Ken Griffey Jr Sports Illustrated cover of The Natural
Michael Jordan Tiger Woods golf picture
Barry Sanders Lions Jersey with Lions Helment and Oklahoma State Helmet
    Thuman Thomas Oklahoma State Helmet
    Jerry Rice Jersey and Football
Ladainian Tomlinson jersey and helmet from Chargers
    Charles Barkley Suns Jersey
    Kobe Bryant (#24) jersey
    Shaq Lakers jersey
    Julius Ervning jersey
    Marshall Faulk jersey and helmet
    David Robinson dream team jersey

He gifted me all that and we still didn't put a dent in the collection. His hockey/baseball collection is probably the largest percentage of all the memorabilia and i'm not big into either of those sports. I'm going back over there soon to paint the basement and he said he has more fore me. Very cool of him to share this with me.

PSA is definitely the most reputable and highest regarded in the hobby industry. Beckett has become so gimmicky with their "black label" Pristine 10 grade and inconsistent grades as a whole. I have some BGS 9.5 cards that look like 8's and 8.5's.

Box breaks are a great, cheaper way to get the cards of the players you actually want. Player/team break auctions on eBay can often times go overlooked and you can get spots for dirt cheap.

My grandfather would go to Red Sox spring training every season and would come back with signed balls for my brother and I. There were some real duds like Paul Quantrill, Phil Plantier, Ellis Burks, but there were also Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs and Dwight Evans.

The most notable is, of course, the signed Ted Williams ball. There's also Yaz & Pesky floating around our family as well.
