It’s convos like this that remind me I’m American af in the sense that I’m largely ignorant to cultures outside our own
“A report from NerdWallet this month said 31% of sports bettors perceive gambling as an investment. This is up from 14% in last year’s survey.”
LOL at 40% claiming they're overall winners, those big buildings in the desert wouldn't be there if that was reality.
I mean the perception of it when it was legalized just doesn't compare to its current state. I admit I had no idea it would develop into something that consumes entire pregame shows among other things. I'll certainly take the L there.
I think you could guess that sports gambling would be a net negative at the start of this but I'm not sure anyone could have guessed sports "journalists" would be pushing it every minute of every broadcast. That is certifiably insane and of course the path we took as a country
I still think there is an argument that sports betting being legalized is a good thing. IMO the current form is an extreme example (due to gambling being uniquely addictive) of what you get when you combine novel activities and our current state of unrestrained capitalism.
I dunno it seemed kinda obvious we’d end up in this situation because when does the USA ever handle things responsibly
Generally, yes. Bc a civilized country would have accompanied regulation with legalization. But in America, unfettered free markets? Stain on society. We like to point to the UK on this subject and they are still imposing tighter regulations on gambling promotions. Whereas America in 2025 would not be banning Joe Camel, we'd put him in charge of the ASPCA.
Seeing LeBron James’ DraftKings ad the other day had me agreeing with one of the people I hate most in this world. Laura Ingraham. He should have listened to her sage advice and shut up & dribble. Any celebrity whose financial future is so secure they can live out their days in hedonistic fashion that endorses this sort of gambling will not be on my prayer list if they ever get Luigi’d.
