I really enjoyed the one in the below spoiler. Do not open if you have not seen the final episode, song title gives away the final arc of the story Spoiler
Really enjoyed the show- but I have some mixed feelings on it. I'll preface by saying, it was a great show on so many levels - but some of the characters and story arcs I just don't care about at all. The world that was build for them to live in is just amazing. The stories of how everyone got to the current time was amazing. The acting was great, the scenes, costumes, all amazing. The traveling symphony characters - didn't care for them at all.
The middle of the season current timeline was my least favorite part for sure. But I do think the third act/final few eps overcame that, for me at least.
I'm not sure that we really are supposed to care about them. I think the symphony was just a way to carry the three different post flu worlds - one decided what was worth keeping was music, literature, art -one decided they wanted to hold onto as much of what was normal before the flu. With a museum, schools, power, running water etc. If you noticed, they even built houses that looked like they would be on a street in a neighborhood out of the airport stands/stores -the third was the prophet's fantasy world. Clark's "what the fuck" line in the last episode was probably his most honest and true thought/line of the show. Think there is more that's meant to be pulled from Kirsten and Tyler being kids during the collapse and growing up in the post world and how they in turn raised Alex and Tyler the undersea, but I don't think it's necessary to go.that deep
My only issue was how unresolved the child suicide bomber plot line was. I get that Kiersten could have killed Tyler for that and chose not to, but still.
Same. Read the book and they changed it a lot, for the better imo. I have zero complaints other than what you mentioned.
When he asked why she was helping him, she said "stabbing you didn't work" The only way to get him away from the symphony/the symphony free was to do the play It wasn't not resolved. Like I said above, Clark saying "what the fuck" when he led what was basically a cult a way was a great line
i think i've digested the finale and show a bit more. i went into the show blind (knew it was about a pandemic, didn't know the acting troupe thing) - the characters were so incredible. the set design and the costuming was g e n i u s. i didn't even really like the plot (insofar as i don't care much to watch a show about an acting troupe) and i found it completely captivating and engaging. this show felt richer than just about any other miniseries/single season show i've watched. - the intertwining stories were so beautifully conducted. imo, stories that do this often shrink the universe (think like star wars where everyone important is related) but there was logic to all of the reductions here and the universe was already deliberately small. - the kids hugging Gil at the conclusion of whatever episode that was (starting with Kirsten seeing the girl and chasing her) was deeply affecting to me. i turned off my computer and phone. i had trouble sleeping. i can't remember anything like that. - kirsten and jeeven with frank was incredible. their separation was tragic. the finale was incredible. - i think every role was casted perfectly. i especially enjoyed gael garcia bernal because his role was somewhat similar to his character in mozart in the jungle. especially loved the actors for Frank (guy from Informer), young kirsten, and the two logistics people. just really special tv. i think unlike others in this thread, i actually don't have an immediate desire to rewatch this show. it's heavy for me (in a good way) and not something i just want to casually jump into. i need to take a break from serious tv for a bit and depressurize.
I think the way Tyler's mom just wanders off into the woods with that literal army of culty kids did warrant a little more exposition in retrospect... I know she's reuniting with her son but you gotta address the rest of that madness somehow.
He says that the girl follower did that of her own accord while he was hurt after kiersten stabbed him. He also says that if she kills him he won’t be able to control the group and presumably something like that would happen again.
Just heard about this on a random, unrelated to TV podcast called Stuff You Should Know and one of the guys mentioned this and said it was good. Can’t wait to check it out.
I could be wrong but I believe the inference we're supposed to make is Tyler realized that not everything from the before is bad and is I guess de-programming these kids now? It both made sense and didn't at the same time to me.
I agree that he's definitely been de-radicalized, but they're still marching off into the woods with hundreds of brainwashed kids, so I would like there have to been more there.
I really enjoyed the show overall. I could have done with a little less Shakespeare and a lot more Miranda. She was the most interesting character on the show.
Show was a masterpiece. Loved every second of it. Spoiler Not sure of the rules of this so i will put this in spoiler tags but the scene where Kiersten is performing Hamlet while flashbacking to learning her parents had just died was beautiful and moved me quite a bit, 'I dont even know how many days until Christmas' :(
I’m only on episode seven, so I’m not reading more, but this is a classic example of character driven content. They fucking nailed it. I don’t care what happens. They just created amazing characters and that’s all that matters.
Done with episode eight (rewatched 1-5 because I tend to drift away when watching new things). Show is phenomenal. Ep seven was fire. Surprised it isn’t getting more traction. Shoutout to Johnny Utah’s boo for holding it down. Excited to finish tonight.
I have so much to watch right now, but I feel like I need to go back and do a rewatch. This was one of those shows like Leftovers or Lost that just brought on other level feels.
Jumping in now because I just heard about the show last week and then finished it in three days. Didn’t read the book but I prob will now. Just an amazing show, my fav TV show since Severance (I know it came out first, but I only just got to it). It’s weird because I definitely have some bones to pick about the plot that are the same as others in here but at the same time it was so beautiful, emotional, and riveting that even with those shakey plot points I still think it’s a top 5 show all time for me.
Just finished this show tonight. It was fantastic and I was going to be devastated if we didn’t get a Jeevan/Kirsten reunion. The end hit me in the feels. Young Kirsten actress was amazing.
Finally started a rewatch. I kept putting it off because of how much I loved it and kept thinking I’d some how diminish the initial viewing. Really thought it just felt differently because it came out in 2021, basically 2 years after Covid, but Covid was still fresh. First episode is so fucking good. The plane crash, them leaving to bob Dylan song, then future kirsten, then the space station - so good
Finished the rewatch. Just as good the second time through. -I didn’t make the connection the first time that the St Debra By the Water town and statue (where the pregnant lady in the symphony has her baby at the beginning) is named after the doctor who was in the department store baby clinic. Also, Kirsten says “what if a wolf eats your baby?” In that town. She thought for almost 20 years that a wolf ate jeevan nearby. The water slide where they first meet Tyler is the same one jeevan sees in the frozen pond outside the cabin. -the baby whose mom dies during childbirth(the one Tyler comes and asks if it will survive with him) is Alex. Can’t believe I missed that the first time - the weird guy who wears the bike helmet and keeps inviting them to the museum was Elizabeth’s assistant. He’s the guy with the weird hair (think it was a wig) and Italian accent on the plane and left with the fake homeland security guy and the soccer team -jeevan became both his brother (cane) and sister (doctor) -Kirsten gave up the book the first time to raise Alex after losing her in the golf club. She gave it up the second time when the girl with the mines ran away with it. That is why she ended up reuniting with jeevan. She decided to let it go
Beautiful show with m some incredible performances. Super weird ofc but just beautiful. Didn’t piece together Alex was Rose’s baby, idk why/how I missed that. The countertop story from Miranda, ooh boy hit me in the feels. What a character.
