Call me crazy but I disagree. The absolute funniest part of Stern's terrestrial radio show was him constantly pushing the limits of what was considered 'decent' on the radio. And the team as a whole (excluding Robin) were masters at it. Those barriers were removed with satellite. Those early satellite shows were funny, don't get me wrong, but something was missing imo.
I 100% agree with this post. Entertainment is best when there are barriers, because it forces creativity. That said, there were times at Sirius before Artie left that were some of my favorite in the show's history. It is, in its current format, terrible by comparison.
There was nothing wrong with '06-'09 Stern, there was a wealth of stories and bits we got that would have never appeared on terrestrial even in a "clean" fashion. No sense pitting them against each other, the satellite years were just an evolution of the show, as good and bad as his terrestrial stuff.
Billy west on the show was the apex of pre Sirius years and the first 3-4 years into Sirius was the height of the current era
"Everything is great. He’s coming back on Monday. He had to take a personal day, that’s all,” Beth Stern told The Post.
his work ethic created the hysteria. he missed so little time over the years that any absence is now taken as a sign of a serious problem. I personally can't shake the feeling that something is up somewhere just because the dude simply never misses work.
Exactly. He feeds into it. He could tweet, or the show could tweet, "Just needed a day. All good. See you Monday." and this would be a non-story.
The other thing that fucked him was announcing Fallon as a guest, which he seldom does. If he doesn't say that, everyone assumes it's one of his million vacation days.
Woke up this morning and saw "A Look Back at the Wildest and Crudest Moments of Howard Stern's Career" in the Daily News. Thought it was all over, but they must've just been capitalizing on the swirling BS.
Howard Stern himself hasn't truly been funny since Jackie Martling stopped feeding him jokes on post-its. He is the king of the 'put down'. Outside of a Stern show there is no place for a one line zinger writer like that. Stern laughing maniacally at Artie Lange laughing at his own stories doesn't make Howard funny and very, very little Stern says on his own is even chuckle worthy these days.
Howard hasn't been funny since being edgy was funny but he's the maestro and that's what he's good at and why the show works.
He and Robin have no idea they aren't funny.. They go on these 5 minute tangents where they make terrible jokes and the other fake laughs. The Seacrest list shit was a recent example. Just really hard to listen to.
Fired up neurotic Howard is funny, and that's not him trying being funny necessarily. Any time he impersonates his parents or televangelists will always be funny to me though.
Let's say you have to spend 72 hours confined to a room with no TV, radio or entertainment of any kind, and that you have to spend it with one of these five people: Medicated Pete, Sour Shoes, Jeff the Drunk, Elephant Boy or High Pitch. Rank them in order of most willing to be with to least willing to be with. My list: Sour, Pete, High Pitch, Jeff, Elephant Boy
2 hours is definitely sour, but I imagine that 72 hours locked in a room with sour would considered torture in all 50 states.
It was as funny as I was hoping it'd be. The interview with Asian Pete was great. They really need to document Asian Pete and Medicated Pete hanging out for a whole day.
