I've really been wanting to read something by Dostoevsky if we are feeling literary.

John Steinbeck is a favorite of mine. Would definitely love to reread The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden or Cannery Row. All would make for really good discussion imo

I know a bunch of people have been saying World War Z but something about zombies sounds :meh: to me

If we ever do non fiction Guns, Germs and Steel is god tier

    Check out #3.

As far as what we read (genre), it matters not. I'll put up the first five I get every week (barring repeats). Fiction, non-fiction, self-help, biography... whatev.

Are you saying there's no need for this thread? PMing you nominations works but idk, I'd kinda like to have a discussion to hear people's rationale, get ideas, etc :idk:

My original thought was that by suggesting books in an open forum such as this, there would be a 'mob rule' mentality that would permeate the thread making the decision on five difficult and lengthy. Someone would say, "How about 'Game of Thrones'?", and another would say, "Fuck you, I ain't reading that dungeons and dragons faggot shit!", then some douche would suggest like six books all in one post and get pissed if at least one wasn't chosen, forcing someone else to list seven. At the end of the day, a book is a book (some better than others, but even that is subjective). I'm impartial, I take the first five. Seems easier and more fair.

And more than anything, I don't want to seem like a condescending prick with a Napoleon complex. If the group wants a discussion thread for the next books, that's cool.

have you read anything by him?

if not...start with Crime and Punishment, after reading that you'll want to read everything he's written

World War Z was a fantastic book. It was about so much more then the "disaster" side, and really delved deep into how all these different characters coped during and after it. I would definitely recommend reading it even if it isn't selected here. Unfortunately it sounds like the movie is going to destroy the original story.

I'd like to read Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." I have never read Guns, Germs and Steel, but it sounds interesting. If you haven't read them, I would recommend A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, And You Shall Know Our Velocity, A Confederacy of Dunces, and/or The Tender Bar.

Haven't read any of those. I read the graphic novel version of the Zinn book (People's History of American Empire) and it was fucking excellent. Would be down for reading the whole thing. You should def read GGS immediately

I've tried reading it off and on for the past month. There was definitely parts that had me cracking up, but I'm halfway through the book with the feeling that absolutely nothing has happened yet. I kinda feel like that is done on purpose, but I don't like it. I think Toole is a tool.

if we're doing another book, I've heard amazing things about Don't Put Me In Coach, it's a book about Mark Titus' career as a walk on at OSU basketball.

I wouldn't suggest this for the club but if you want a quick weekend read, check out Public Enemy Zero by Andrew Mayne. It's .99 on Amazon. Pretty interesting sci-fi thriller.

Never heard of that place, pretty cool. Thanks. I wonder how they get away with such blatant piracy. I doubt Stephen King allows them to give away his book.

Btw I think if a book from 2 weeks ago doesn't win, the period should double or something so we dont become bogged down by each members book.

this idea could be dumb as fuck seeing as I haven't thought it out

Not to get too complicated, but we could do it like MLB HOF voting. A book that doesn't get selected needs a certain percentage to stay alive for the next rounds. That way if it is a strong week for good suggestions, a good book doesn't get left out. Also prevents books that keep losing from always being suggested.

I didn't really think it out either. Just a thought. Probably too much work.
