I think it was Shelvey that hinted at some new formations. It should be interesting. Just a little over a week away. It would be amazing to start off like last season.

The National Swansea Preview. Not too bad, I'd say fair.
    Football [IMG]
    Richard Jolly Jul 26, 2015

With the 2015/16 English Premier Leagueseason a matter of weeks away, Richard Jolly provides his thoughts on each of the 20 teams and predicts their final league finish. Here he looks at Swansea City.

If Swansea’s heads hurt, it may be because they are banging them against a glass ceiling. It will be hard for Garry Monk’s side to improve upon their eighth-place finish.

The sole criticism last season may be that too many points escaped their grasp because of the concession of late goals.

Yet their strong finish was all the more laudable after the January sale of top scorer Wilfried Bony.

Swansea have long had a deserved reputation for transfer-market prowess and they are likely to maintain it.

Monk has bolstered his forward line with the additions of Portugal international Eder and the Ghanaian Andre Ayew.

A former centre-back has also prioritised adding solidity at the back so the French left-back Franck Tabanou represents another pertinent signing.

The rookie manager has shown he has the toughness to phase out former teammates, whether Leon Britton or Angel Rangel, so perhaps Neil Taylor will be next, and Monk has flourished so far at allying Swansea’s trademark silk with more style.

Jonjo Shelvey offers both and his new contract is a sign of Monk’s long-term planning. But if he is to surpass his achievements last season, he may have to look to the cup competitions.

Key Man: Gylfi Sigurdsson — Only Cesc Fabregas and Santi Cazorla recorded more assists last season. Sigurdsson made Bony a more potent force. Now the Icelander’s task is to establish a similar relationship with Ayew or Eder.

Pivotal Signing: Andre Ayew — Swansea have tended to benefit from pace and skill in wide positions. Ayew offers both as well as the probability of more goals than Nathan Dyer or Wayne Routledge offer. Getting him on a free transfer (from Marseille) looks a great bit of business.

Crucial Factor: The big games. Monk felt Michael Laudrup’s team were too timid against the top teams. His side changed that by beating both Arsenal and Manchester United home and away. Such landmark wins are a huge boost to morale.

    Prediction: 9th

Well preseason is over and we are less than a week from Chelsea. This should be a long week of waiting.

Yeah no chance Dyer is in the starting 11.
I'm optimistic for a good year, but I'm not sure we push for Eurpope like it seems everyone is starting to expect. I do believe we will be in the 9-13 range but this is going to be a hell of a year with the impending tv money.

I don't think we win the first three to start, but in the first month I see no reason to not expect points from Sunderland and Newcastle.

Nervous about this season. I think we struggle early on, but then Ayew and Bafé figure out how to work together and we end up 10th or 11th at the end of the season.

Also, apparently a Five Guys is opening up in Swansea. Congratulations, Taffy.

My heart tells me we will be around 6-8 but my brain says 10-13.

However Ayew is certainly class and a huge signing for us adding the strength we did, without major losses is a big deal.

Think we can upset Chelsea with the current preason form they are in. However I could also see us lose 0-5 again. Basically I don't know, but excited as can be to see us Saturday.

    16. Swansea City
    Last championship: Never
    Years in Premier League: 5/24
    Nickname: The Swans, The Jacks
    Location: Wales
    American players: None
    Biggest rivals: Cardiff City

    PST’s Premier League season preview

A big time rugby area, Swansea is also indicative of the a travelers dream: friends have told me it’s a gorgeous place to visit. They’ve played a good deal of free-wheeling football and I certainly wouldn’t mind supporting the Swans under Garry Monk, a longtime club man who kept the team alive as a first-year boss two years ago before turning them into a fun contender last season. With the addition of Andre Ayew, Swans are a candidate — along with Stoke — to become a perennial top-half contender. If I were coming along now, I’d be tempted to adopt the Welsh side.

Gylfi, Shelvey, Montero, Ki, Ayew all starting in the midfield.

I hate no Cork but we know he will come on. I'm really excited about that midfield.

I know a lot of Swans fans online are expecting us to play defensive and stay back but I think Monk is going to play to win and see what our side has in them since its so early.

We may be down a goal but holy fuck great half, top class.

Realistically we could be up away against Chelsea. Gomis doesn't hesitate and knocks in the first one, and no own goal its 2-1 Swans. Hope to see it continue in the second half because we aren't out of grabbing an away point.

Good performance I think we have to be happy with the result. Can't tell what to take from this but we certainly look talented and improved from last year.

I'll take the point but it is somewhat of a let down after the red card. Losing Montero did sap a bit of the offense. Ayew should be impressive once he gets on the same page with everybody

I had been waiting to see Montero opposite Ayew all preseason. It really is a great set up. Gylfi and Shelvey in the same midfield makes me happy.

Gomis...Oh Gomis I'm just not sure he s the right type of striker but he played well second half of last year, not going to get crazy over one match.

Also weak link Taylor played pretty well, the entire back line played great honestly.

Taylor was fine. He was getting forward more today than he was last season. He was very close to getting an assist on that barely offside Gomis go ahead.

Hazard was amazing and our boys looked a little spent at the end

The life of a Swansea City fan - the joy of the weekend's positive result is quickly tempered by people writing articles about how Montero will be a target of the bigger clubs before the end of the transfer window.

I am sure he will, but just like Garry said this year about others unless it is one of Arsenal/Liverpool/Man City/Man Utd/Chelsea what can he accomplish at another club he cant at Swansea right now. We have a strong side, with depth and he is going to play a lot of minutes for us.

If he wants to leave, he should do it in the winter or next summer rather than now imo

Obviously I think he's going to see more playing time for the swans than he will at the bigger/better clubs, but he may not feel that way. I thought the same thing about Bony, too. You may be right that he will be able to at least maximize his financial compensation if he waits until the January window. Somebody is going to be desperate for improved scoring chances when that rolls around.

My thoughts as well and the three months lines up with the winter window to be sure.

I think Montero would be silly to leave now unless he's guaranteed to get the type of minutes he will here at a top club.

I think it's good to point out that the front line when both game winners were scored against Arenal last year was: Montero - Gomis - Barrow. I think that could be a very threatening lineup if they want to give Gylfi a rest and move Ayew to that position some games.

Great half played. Really look great and the improvements from last year are actually evident early.

Back line playing much more organized early. Ayew is a great addition and Shelvey wow what a difference a summer made for him.
