If you were the manager of your favorite team and had all the resources in the world (Like City or Real Madrid) to run whichever formation and tactics you wanted to which formation would you pick and why? For the longest time I was a fan of the diamond formation that worked so well for Ancelotti and other Italian teams as well as much of South American teams that did not use the 4-4-2. I like the diamond (4-1-2-1-2) for a couple of reasons, but mostly because it features the CAM or old trequartista position which is my favorite. The problem with the diamond is that you need a true CAM and 2 true strikers for it to work perfectly. It also requires both of the outside midfielders to be both great in attack but comeback on defense. I would have a tough time deciding between that an my next one. I think that with the evolution of the winger/attacker and dissapearance of trequartistas and true stikers, the possesion on the midfield has become more and more important, teams like barcelona have taken advantage of this approach and dominated with just one true striker, and when they added Zlatan to Eto'o it did not work out as expected. To counteract that, teams (famously Germany and now Real Madrid) have gone to the 4-2-3-1, which puts emphasis on the midfield but also allows for a CAM and wingers and features a true striker. I think that would be my preferred formation now. It would allow me to have 2 mids in the back that can help out in defense but also create when they steal the ball in their own half and quickly get the ball to the CAM and wingers. The problem is finding those 2 critical players to hold the midfield. Alonso does it perfect for Real Madrid and I would even put somebody like Busquets in that role as well. But my absolute favorite for that position is somebody like Schweinsteiger that can do both and come forward. Also critical is finding the 3 player combination in attack behind the striker. Real Madrid has had trouble doing that (also trouble finding a striker that can stay in form and function well), but I think they are almost there with Ozil and Ronaldo. The most important part to me is having a CAM that can roam and alternate positions. Ozil is the perfect man for that as it was evident in the World Cup. What are your thoughts, comments, etc. Gotta run to work now but I would like to see how some of you guys see the game and tactics.
Also would like to add that I love Nasri and Silva in the attacking mid role and cannot believe that City has both of them. Furthermore it is absolutely sick that Germany has both Gotze and Ozil too and like cas mentioned maybe at some point they will just put 5 attacking mids/wingers on the field and say fuck a striker. I mean who would you bench of Ozil, Gotze, Mueller, Kroos and Schweni?
Depends on personnel. I like a strong midfield though. Not all teams have that out and out playmaker that can play that spot alone. I actually like the 4-4-2 for City because they have 2 players that like to dribble as much as pass and not really guys that are great at completely running the show in Nasri and Silva but both can be playmakers, Silva much more so than Nasri though. If I'm running the DFB I'd go with the 4-2-3-1.Ozil would be the #10 but Gotze would also be able to take on a good amount of playmaking responsibilities and Muller could push high and support Gomez. -----Gomez-- -Gotze--Ozil--Muller --Khedira--Schweinsteiger If I coached Spain I'd do a similar lineup. Xavi and Busquets deep to organize everything and maintain possession, Silva and Iniesta working the wings and also cutting in and Fabregas to be there on the receiving end and also playing the playmaker. -----Villa--- Iniesta---Cesc---Silva ------Xavi----Busquets Also like Man U's lineup where Rooney plays playmaker and forward and they work the wings well with Nani and Young. Not in love with Anderson in the DM spot and they seem to be giving up more chances than they are used to. That's more personnel than a tactical problem to me though. They also have Evans playing instead of Vidic and obviously that makes a huge difference in the chances department.
its gonna be interesting to see how Spain will insert the younger players (Silva, Fabregas and Mata) to their well-oiled machined in the middle with Alonso and Busquets in the back and Xavi and Iniesta in the middle. I still think they will use 2 strikers in Villa and Torres so that leaves an extra spot in the middle. But my question was more to if you had any personnel or if you could pick the players to fit your system, what would you use? Of course it depends on the personnel for individual teams but if you could just buy anybody and plug them on your system what would you run?
I'll try to do this without taking Messi/C. Ronaldo/Xavi/Rooney, as you would obviously shift a team to fit them the 4-2-3-1 has become my favorite formation to both use (FIFA) and watch at striker, the key for me would be versatility, I would want a player who is comfortable playing as a lone striker, but is just as likely to pop up and interchange with the other 3 attacking positions. the striker I have in mind for this is obviously Robin Van Persie. It becomes a challenge for the back 4 to keep track of him, and he has the creativity to play the final pass and the ability to finish when presented with opportunities With the three attacking midfielders, you obviously look for players who can be creative and aren't limited to one position. If you have a forward like RVP who will flare out wide or drop into the midfield, you want players who have the ability to push up top and fill into the box. On the right, I would take Thomas Mueller. He has great size, great ability on the ball, and he scores goals. Mueller has had a lot of success crashing into the box from the outside position. He also provides an outlet when the defense is being pressed, as he will generally be favored to win any aerial ball against a lb. At CAM, I would take another german in Ozil. I would argue he is the best pure CAM in the world right now, and he would have the freedom to roam around and find space. He is creative, scores goals, is dynamic in that he can push the team forward with both the dribble and pass. Moving to the left, I would look for a right footed attacking player with pace, as my other options aren't extremely quick. For this, I will take Eden Hazard. With the two holding midfielders, I would want one who is a talented defensive midfielder who can read the game well, who is athletic enough to cover for the fullbacks when they push forward, and break up play. There are a lot of options here, as Alex Song, Lucas, M'Vila, or Vidal could all play this role. Next to him, you want someone who can play box to box, is very good in keeping possession, and can also add a bit of creativity. Options are players such as Wilshere, Kroos, Busquets, Xabi Alonso or Ramires. I'll take the duo of Lucas/Wilshere. The key with these two is finding the right balance. Leaves a lineup of --------------------------RVP-------------------------- Hazard------------------Ozil--------------------Mueller ------------------Wilshere----------------------------- ------------------------------Lucas--------------------- will type up a back 4 later, just realized that I just typed a lot of words that no one will read
it was also really tough to leave out Gotze and Mata, as I really wanted to fit both of them into the lineup, just didn't have room
this is a really nice distraction from reading about security studies if I am city, I would run a 4-2-2-2 ---------Dzeko------Aguero------- --------Nasri-----------Silva------ -----------Toure---de Jong------- ---------------Backline------------
Oh shit. I totally forgot about Alonso, I'd take Busquets out and put Alonso in that position. I'd give Xavi a finale in Euro 2012 and then move on from him and then have Busquets take Xavi's position next to Alonso. I don't agree with the 2 strikers especially how Torres is playing, he's not good enough to be in the team. Think Spain need Cesc for that final ball. Xavi for the great things he does lacks a great final ball, Messi offers that for Barca but Spain lack a great final product when Cesc isn't in there. I honestly could make the case for about 10 formations and really can't pick 1. I like my outside backs good defensively but also work the flanks. Guys like Lahm, Abidal, and Sagna are my ideal outside backs.Maicon when he was on his game 2 years ago. Want a strong defensive mid. Someone like Yaya, Marcos Senna in his day, Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, Claude Makelele. It works for Barca having Sergio there but he's not a defensive mid to me. Want a guy to keep possession next to the defensive mid but will run all day and be a pest. Guys like Wilshere and Busquets. Schweinsteiger or Alonso could play either defensive mid or next to it. Then I want some playmakers in front of that who will run at the defense and obviously need some finishers. If I could build my dream team. Guess the best formation would be 4-4-2, up tempo like shit but strong with some great finishers up top. -------Rooney/RVP------Messi/Ronaldo ---Gotze/Hazard------Ozil/Silva ----Schweini/Wilshere----Yaya/Alonso---- Abidal/Evra---Vidic/Pique---Vermaelen/Hummels---Lahm/Sagna -------------------Casillas/Wojesch
Lord Watson has gotten in your head about Lucas. If I had to take out Messi and Ronaldo I'd put more of a poacher type like Falcao or a Dzeko type and then use Rooney or RVP as a forward/playmaker.Or I could play Rooney and RVP together. ------Rooney-------RVP------- ---Gotze-----------------Silva------ ---------Wilshere------Yaya-------- --Abidal-----Vermaelen---Vidic-----Lahm-- -----------------Casillas--------------------
I read all of ur post tne and i agree with the two holding position being similar but different. I am at work and on the phone will post more later, just reading mostly now.
I just didnt want to have a midfield featuring two Arsenal players, and Lucas is a top 3 cdm in the EPL and thats good enough for me If I am playing for the future, I would take M'Vila over any other CDM, but for this season I would take Lucas or Song
tne is my tactical soul mate. I'm on my phone but he hit on what I believe works the best and I when I get home I'll post my thoughts especially where I believe defenses are heading, or at least how to combat barca. I really like the 4-2-2-2 as well and agree it would be perfect for city
my backline would be Evra------Pique------Hummels------Lahm outside backs are strong at both defending and going forward, which is important as they will be counted on to provide the width and as players to help keep possession, as they will often be the unmarked players when the team would have the ball Pique is probably the best CB in the world when on the ball, his passing and distribution from the back is outstanding, and Hummels is no slouch at this either, when defending, Hummels would act as the destroyer while Pique would slide behind him for cover
possible different look for Arsenal this year -----------------------------Walcott------------------------ -----------------------RVP---------------------------------- Gervinho-----------------------------------------------Yossi --------------------Wilshere-----Song--------------------- Gibbs---------------Kos----------Per (tv5)-----------Sagna ------------------------------Szcz---------------------------- I think Walcott has peaked in terms of wing play, he still seems lost in his decision making, lacks any ability to cross, and seems to fade in and out of the match. He has looked ok over the past two years once he gets inside the box, and playing him centrally will give him this opportunity. It also puts RVP in a more creative role and closer to Wilshere, which is key as they are our only two really creative players left () when Diaby is healthy (assuming it happens before Wilshere), I think we will see him starting next to Song with Arteta moving forward
i wish i could contribute but working in sales has sapped me of all and any profound, original or interesting thought
Here's a question for the future. Who would you take for the next 6-8 years Xavi-Silva-Cesc-Iniesta-Alonso-Busquets-Mata-Cazorla-Martinez vs Ozil-Gotze-Schweini-Khedira-Muller-Kroos- Bender- Grobkreutz-Reus Honestly can say I've never seen 2 sides with this much young midfield talent. I'd go with the Germans just because I couldn't think more of Gotze and Ozil to me right now is the best playmaker in the world.
I agree with most of what TNE said and I would try to take the same approach. I would first focus on getting those 2 players to hold the midfield, the combinations are endless but I will go with Vidal and Schweni. Vidal could stay back more and Schweni can be the attacking deep mid.
Obviously wasn't invited to play in this thread, but Ancelotti's 4-3-2-1 and the traditional 4-3-1-2 are my favorites. His Christmas tree with Seedorf and Kaka playing behind a striker was amazing to watch in the 2007 CL. It requires a true #10 and the other player needs to be more of an SS, but it's amazing when it works. --Rooney Silva-Gotze Boom
Forgot to add Thiago. Haven't seen enough from Leon or Callejon to put them on the list. Muniain is another if you consider him a midfielder.
will be interesting to see what Germany does in the central midfield in 2014 because I dont think Schweni and Khedira will still be good enough then Gotze-------Ozil------Mueller --------Kroos---Bender------- will Bender be good enough to go against Spain and Brazil by then? does Kroos/Bender offer enough defensively? will another cdm emerge?
I agree with the author in that the game is moving away from the target forward. Even bigger forwards like RVP and Torres no longer pose Aerial threats. But, I think the issue is that there are very few people Carroll's size that are as athletic as he is. I believe Carroll can be very effective if used the right way because defenses are no longer being built to stop people like him. Instead they're built to contain the smaller, quicker, and less physical forwards. To be honest I think the reason Carroll hasn't played well is because Dalglish really isn't that great of a tactical manager. And this article isn't written if Carroll turns that header in the last minute in against Norwich Saturday.
I thought that Liverpool would line up in something like ------------------Carroll------------------ ------------------Suarez------------------ Downing------------------------------Kuyt --------------Lucas----Gerrard----------- Suarez roams throughout the formation to find space, let Downing stay wide to cross the ball to Carroll, let Kuyt crash the back post, give Gerrard the freedom to make runs to join the attack but Carroll's play hasnt been deserving of a starting spot at this point
That's my preferred lineup as well. unfortunately dalglish has been trying to line us up in a 4-4-2 too much and our midfield is getting destroyed which makes it impossible for Carroll to play well. When he's been in the game we've just hoofed the ball to him and not given him any support. I don't think he's been put in a position where he can succeed.
Bastian is 27 and don't see him leaving the lineup any time soon. Admittedly haven't watched a lot of Bayern this year but don't see Bender in his league yet. Can definitely see Khedira being overtaken, think Sahin is gonna take away a lot of his time at Real.
17 year old emre can, the captain of the u17 world cup team that tried to fight his own team and mexico when they lost
He better for the amount of money they threw at him. Really wanted that kid to stay in the Bundesliga.
