Makes it seem like they had/have a cap to limit hp to have better mileage between charges.

It was an electronic limit on the motors max RPM, cars mileage efficiency is still the same, but peoples driving habits post update might affect their personal mileage.

This wouldn’t increase acceleration. They might have changed that based on some validation testing (which is a little worrisome), but that would only affect top speed with a single speed gearbox.

I’d guess they had a current limit in place for the motors and only increased it after monitoring the temperature of the motors and power electronics under various conditions with max power applied.

    lol

never mind last year's hardcore cost cutting.

    or the layoffs.

or not needing to touch the cash they just raised.

(or never mind having internal controls and a functioning organization where the CFO and CEO aren't personally reviewing expenses.)

Little update on my journey to purchase a E vehicle.

Took the I-Pace for a spin at a local dealer. It’s smaller than I expected. Really nice interior and has all the bells and whistles. And it’s amazingly fun to drive. The 0-60 is legit. 500+ torque was crazy. Pushed it on the highway to 100 and it didn’t stress or struggle. Needless to say it was silent. Didn’t get to use the one peddle feature but the driving experience was fantastic. They had 6 maxed out I-Pace on the lot in different trims. That surprised me as I thought there would be a wait on them.

Tuesday I’ll be going to the Audi dealership to test drive the e-tron. I went to the Audi dealership on the same day as the Jaguar test run and it just happened to be the day the Audi dealership got its dealer model. It still hadn’t had its software upgraded or inspection done so I couldn’t take it for a spin. The one on site was fully loaded and just sexy as hell. It looked like a SUV and it had lots of room. Essentially it’s a Q8. Anyways looking forward to Tuesday. If it rides on par or close to the I-Pace I’ll likely start to wheel and deal on the E-Tron. Only downside is there is apparently a 4 month wait on a 2019 model. So I’m not sure if it’s in my best interest to wait on the 2020 since I have a wait regardless

You fucking morons. Both of you.

The article is about autopilot and a crash in Fla. It has nothing to do with the "gamed routes" of autonomy day.

Congrats on continuing to be a fucking moron, Dbl.

I'd love to see some stats on Autopilot crashes per hour of driving vs human crashes per hour of interstate driving.

So far we have 2 total Tesla autopilot crashes? No computer system is ever going to be perfect, but I'd imagine it'll eventually be safer than human driven cars

It's nice they can make a car/truck that looks somewhat normal.

I think these are going be like 80-90k tho, right?

ah. I'm guessing that's with the lowest settings and a battery that doesn't exist? My boss doesn't think it's kosher either.

Atm let's say Rivian uses Tesla chargers. (I don't know if that's possible) without having that capability it would be hard for me to drive in and out of the city without losing time going out of my way to charge it. My 2018 Tahoe costs so much in fuel it would be a no brainer.

Nah definitely more than that, I can at least think of 3 where people have died, 2 in the same scenario. Autopilot is a driver assist feature, more of a lane keep than anything, you should still be paying attention to the roadway.

The biggest fault I find in Tesla with this is they talked about remedying this same situation after the first one happened (slow big rig pulling out in front of highway speed traffic). So what happened on this one?

As for the former NTSB guy, we don't hear about other driver assist systems like Super cruise because no one cares about other manufacturers (that and Supercruise is in like 1 model). It's Tesla, so every event, just like car fires gets wall to wall media coverage.

Think it has more to do with Tesla basically marketing the technology as self driving then whispering that you should still pay attention to the road.

Rivian went traditional looks so aerodynamics suffer, meaning in order to compensate they will have to put a large battery underneath, say 200 Kwh (just adds alot of weight). Unless theres a battery tech breakthrough, which could happen as its slated for 2021 production.

For reference a Model X 100Kwh with the new motors gets a 325 mile range, but it also gets that due to its aerodynamics (which is why it looks the way it does).

TLDR: Every new EV thats come out lately: Audi, Mercedes, and Jag have all underwhelmed on range so I've become skeptical of peoples powertrain stats until I see them tested.

Did Tesla also control all the traffic and cars on this gamed/preset route?

    It's a stupid critique.

my daughter had a playdate with a friend the other day, and the mom pulled up in a new Model 3. Both the mom and the car were very nice.

Wasn't there still concerns of lags in delivery time?? She claimed they ordered theirs about a month ago and got it in 2 weeks.

100% on the they should have marketed the product better, Autopilot in planes is a lot different than what people think in their heads.

Going forward I'd like Tesla to state what Autopilot does and does not do more clearly, unfortunately for most companies it takes public mistakes to correct things. Edit: and they may never do what I'd like to see happen.

    To be very honest depends.

Tesla does batch production of certain models/interiors and then ships them out to inventory to match with a buyer. Some are made frequently: like SR+ black but if you wanted red AWD with white interior I've seen it take close to a 1.5-2 months.

On the crashes, in the scenario where a large truck slowly pulls in front of fast-moving traffic, the cameras do not "see" the truck, right? This is a flaw in the camewras and/or processing of the info, obviously.

Has Tesla said why they do not use both camera and radar/lidar/whatever technology?? Doesn't it stand to reason that using both simultaneously and processing that data would be better than using just one of those technologies?

1.5-2 months does not sound like the awful extended waiting times I've heard about. That seems fairly reasonable for a "custom" version of a car, doesn't it?

Tesla uses radar in conjunction with camera to detect objects in the front. On the 1st crash of the big rig pulling out, it was the golden hour aka the sun was obscuring some of the cameras view if I recall correctly so it would have been on the radar to detect an object in front. Tesla stated that the radar signals height they had it set on passed underneath the trailer, so they were going to remedy this as well as the weight or importance they give the radar input. (Dont quote me on this I'm going off memory)

The problem with this is if they put the radar signal angled up to high you get phantom braking around overpasses because it detects the object above. So its kind of like trying to find the sweet spot.

Yea, its just public perception vs reality. People did have long wait times if they wanted certain models/live internationally when production was ramping up but now its typically between 1.5-2.5 months for certain models/interior combos and as little as 2 weeks for others.

Personally if you knew what you wanted I'd go to your closest store and see what was in new inventory locally, would give you a rough idea when you would get one.

Ah yea, I do recall that Tesla uses radar in crash avoidance, I misspoke. I've seen video of a Tesla detecting a crash of the car in front of the car it's following, and auto-braking before the car in front of the Tesla even starts to brake. It bounces the radar signal under the car in front so it can effectively "see' in front of the car it's following.

Seems like something they can figure out and perfect, not that it will ever be perfect.

Also what state do you live in? Tesla has weird restrictions in a majority of the US because it sells its cars directly to the consumer.

So for example if you lived in say Michigan Tesla is not allowed to have a service center and I believe stores.

I think there is definitely something here on this. There is confusion between the products.

Kind of like that old wives tale of a Drive setting the cruise control in a motor home, then left the drivers seat b/c he thought it would do everything. Tesla does need to, if they aren't, make users very aware of the capabilities of the auto pilot vs self driving, which isn't out (I don't think).

Can someone explain why everyone speaks on range for these e-vehicles? Is it because most are under what a traditional tank of gas would give you? I don't do a lot of long distant driving. my 2011 SUV currently has 50K miles on it. So you get a gauge of what i'm driving. I would assume what the Audi, Jag and others do is sufficient for my needs. Especially if I install the home charging kit.

Eh, theres no way to distinguish if this truly happen in Q1. They cut the most popular S/X model the 75Kwh variant and it seems like setting up the new motor line took longer than they expected. Q2 should be roughly 15k-20k as they get production back up to speed for S&X.

Model 3#'s were fine if you include vehicles in-transit overseas.

Several reasons, but mainly people are used to things like mpg and don't understand things like wh/mi and mileage range is the easiest thing for people to understand. That and people have "range anxiety" when it comes to EV's so EV manufacturers like to say how far they can go to try and counter act this.

In reality its like this, lets say you have a gas car that can go 400 miles w/ 20 mpg, for gas cars that mpg goes down in city driving and is more efficient on the highway at 55mph (with diminishing returns the higher you go above that). For EV's your car is more efficient in city driving (regen braking) and less efficient on the highway.

Its flipped from our typical understanding on cars.

because people still like the idea of having that possibility imo, hence the "range anxiety"

i live in a city and would never exceed 200+ mi driven in a day and could easily make alternative car plans if i'm going to the mountain/beach/football game/road trip if necessary. but a lot of people in general have fears about that and it requires more thought than a regular car (which requires zero thought) because you can get gas anywhere.

If you're not taking it on long trips, it's not an issue at all. It's only an issue if you're driving long distances and have to plan where to charge it on the trip. If you're only driving it around town, range doesn't matter. You might have to plug it in every 5 days instead of 6 days or whatever.

For an EV to do the mpg equivalent its something like this: say you you get 240 wh/mi (avg Model 3)= 1/.24= 4.1miles per kwh times 75 (75kwh per pack) gets you around 312 miles.

Thanks gents... My wife is 99% sold on going with a E vehicle but she has some anxiety about re-charging. She fears that she will run out of power and be stuck. But she has less miles per day on her SUV than I do. She barely cracks 25 miles a day.

If you have a home charger set up and another gas car in the house for long trips she will be just fine. I think Audi's use electrify americas EV charging stations, which is not as large as Teslas and I've heard varying reviews on but its there if you want to look into it.
