A car with a five star crash rating which in 2018 means it has crash alert/avoidance systems will have a significantly lower premium than a car without it

For example my wife traded in a base model Ford Focus for a Ford Edge SEL with blind spot alert and 911 assist and her premium went down despite the Edge being 2x more expensive than the Focus. As the tech becomes more universal, which again I think is a long ways out, you’ll see more premium decreases. It is somewhat offset by the fact that more advanced cars are costing more to repair than before, but in the long run you’ll see decreases.

For further premium comparison, and I admit this is anecdotal, but I have a 2017 GMC Canyon SLT and my premium is higher than my wife’s Edge as it does not have a five star crash rating or any crash alert/avoidance systems

Her lease is up in June and I’m hoping to get her a Titanium Edge with lane keeping and adaptive cruise if I can make the price right (I’m cheap)

Wife had a 2005 trailblazer and moved up to a 2018 traverse with blind spot notification and a 5 star safety rating. Despite it being like 10 times more valuable the premiums are only ~$150 more a year and that's going from liability to full coverage.

What ever happened to the third brake light that blinked when it was activated? I remember them saying that having that would lower premiums.

It’s extraordinary what’s happened with cars in the eight years I’ve been in the business. The industry changes rapidly and cars have become so much smarter and more efficient. It’s actually a lot of fun to follow/keep up with and one of the things I enjoy most about what I do

Like aside from all this tech being discussed, engine and transmission tech is wild now. The V6 in my truck gets 300+ HP and can tow 7000+ pounds. Those were V8 numbers 10-15 years ago. It has an 8 speed transmission which was unheard of back in the day. It gets 26 mpg. Ford has a full size truck that gets damn near 30. It’s crazy. CAFE standards did a lot to shove driverrain tech forward the last decade

Just like to add my $.02 that some of the new technologies like lane assist, and auto braking are a little ahead of themselves. I rarely use lane assist, find it cumbersome. Auto-braking has more false alarms than real triggers.

If you are buying a new car I wouldn't suggest paying more for those features until they are improved.

At the end of Q1 tesla had a goal of 2,500 cars a week. They came up short and produced 2,020 cars last week.

That's not bad and pretty close.

They plan to hit 5,000 at the end of Q2

As someone that drives in the cold and snow/ice for half the year, I'm interested in seeing a. how tesla (and others) develop ways to increase battery function at cold temps and b. how cruise control/lane assist works on self driving cars when there is snow or ice on the roads.

Because yes, a Tesla Model S is almost exactly like the Toyota Corolla. Same size has to mean same car. My trade in value of my 2006 Jeep Commander with 289,000 miles just sky rocketed since its basically now the same thing as aaLand Rover. Sweet!

thread sure has been quiet recently i wonder why

    https://www.consumerreports.org/hyb...lls-short-of-consumer-reports-recommendation/

Musk said that Tesla engineers were attributing the Model 3’s poor braking performance in CR's tests to calibration issues with the car’s braking control system. In a followup email, Musk said his engineering team was validating changes to the braking system this week and “assuming that goes well, plan to deploy via OTA to Model 3 fleet this weekend,” referring to the automaker's ability to deploy software updates to its vehicles over the air.

CR will retest the brakes of the Model 3 once our vehicle receives the update.

During the call, Musk also said that Tesla had already deployed several improvements to later-production Model 3s that could address some of the ride quality and wind noise concerns CR raised with the car, and that he was considering additional improvements to the vehicle’s controls based on CR's feedback.

i don't believe any of the bolded quoted above.

Theres clearly a braking inconsistency, but the physical components on the car have shown it is capable of doing it in the 130 ft range that CR's looking for. Really its just a wait and see if they can do something about it OTA. Clearly a lot of owners have shown they love the car.

Same with production, just going to have to wait and see what the numbers are at the end of June.

agree but skeptical they can make the brakes work better with a software update?

Basically it comes down to the ABS system and how it compresses multiple times without locking up fully, so that’s where the software update would focus on.

Like I said prior the car is physically capable of doing a stop in the range CR is looking for. It’s still a wait and see though.

Elon took this CR criticism better than usual,
links to a YouTube video where CR talks about the hour long conversation Musk had with them.
