Or it sucks if you buy a performance model and the performance doesn’t actually come from superior parts and components, but software updates and how they choose to program their car models.
Clearly there’s no distinction between improving a product and misleading/nickel and diming consumers.
Its like buying a video game nowadays where the initial product is more than likely below standard and you have to wait until patches come out to get what you were looking for
I certainly think there is. But you're complaining about software updates as if Tesla's just had them sitting in the cupboard, waiting to be dusted off. On the face it's a ridiculous complaint. But when you consider that traditional car makers just wait till next year's model to improve performance, it becomes downright moronic. Tesla does a lot of stuff wrong. Releasing free improvements to their cars isn't one of them.
No shit? My complaint is that software programming is the only thing that differentiates certain premium models. If you get a fully loaded AWD LR double battery model 3, the only difference between that and a Performance model is cosmetic and how it’s programmed. The cosmetic “improvements” don’t warrant the premium price, the performance does. And the performance is virtually all software/programming related. That’s a problem as a consumer. What am I paying a premium for? A few keystrokes that unlock true potential/peak performance? If Tesla were magnanimously updating all their vehicles for the benefit of their customers, there’d be a lot of AWD LR owners driving nondescript Performance models right now. But they’re not. So in a way, yeah, the absolute best performance is just sitting on a shelf - unlockable if you pay. My point is, as a consumer, that kind of sucks. Particularly when you consider how sketch Elon is, he arbitrarily/randomly dropped the price of the P model like weeks after it was announced/released. Sucks for the consumer who didn’t wait that fifth week. But it does beg the question, what if they try to monetize updates, sandbag updates to drive sales ala Apple iPhones, etc.? Not a complaint, a concern. And traditional carmakers don’t generally release standard performance upgrades mid model run. I didn’t say it was wrong, I’m saying it leaves a lot of room for fuckery. And as a consumer I’d rather wait and see. Maybe someone jail breaks a Tesla and you get more out of base models for free/cheaper, maybe they do a better job of upgrading Tesla’s software than Tesla does, etc.
But they’re releasing it for free, no? And I’m thinking it didn’t cost them much more (if anything) in R&D to get the improved performance in a Performance model compared to what they have in a LR AWD. At least with traditional carmakers you can see the receipts. We know what a turbo/supercharger costs, we know what improved suspension costs, we know what goes into tuning an engine and all component systems. We don’t really know why a Performance model costs more. It sure isn’t because they painted the calipers, on the same Brembo’s they use on every model, red... or because they have bigger batteries... etc.
That's nonsense. Especially bc you claim you can't see it There is a baseline and every step above or additional performance is added time and cost.
So as far as physical parts that they software limit theres really only two things: -Certain battery pack models (like for instance that new 220 mile standard range vs the 240 mile SR+ or whatever its called is for sure a software limited pack) -It's much debated if the Rear motor in the AWD vs P3D is software limited or its "binned", but for the sake of it say its software limited then its a 9k difference to unleash that performance. The P3D+ version has better brakes, stiffer suspension, larger tires etc than the AWD or P3D- I get the argument over software limiting but it is what it is, and you will see it with other EV manufacturers especially when it comes to the pack. But I don't think thats the same as the firmware update and updates they've done in the past, where they've rolled out a product and gotten data back on how they've performed and allows them to optimize that product. (Similar to the braking distance situation earlier last year) "The CEO said that they have increased the electronic limits on the motors after feeling more comfortable with their capacity after millions of miles of data."
It is a negative of not having true defined model years where you could buy a Model S and in the next 3 weeks they have an upgraded interior. I don't see the sandbagging scenario you are talking about capable of being played out with these, at least not until a possible autonomy stage but thats down the road if ever. The performance price change they did end up refunding customers 5k.
Can’t see what? What differentiates a Performance from a LR AWD? Component wise, not much beyond cosmetic from everything I’ve read/watched. Usually in components though? But the components of these two models are virtually identical, it seems like they are artificially compartmentalizing the performance capabilities to create two distinct classes amongst their model line, even though they’re capable of equal performance without any component upgrades. And I think it’s kind of lame. The best analogy I can come up with is say you’re buying an iPhone that has 1GB of storage, but then you learn that all iPhones actually have 1GB, Apple just restricts access to the those who pay more. So what if someone comes along and jailbreaks iPhones and the guy who paid less for the 256mb model now has access to the entire 1GB that you paid a premium for? That would suck, yeah?
Where is this information? Because I’ve seen 2-3 videos and read a bunch of forum posts where people appear to be/claim they took one of each apart and they’re virtually the same components. Like all they did was paint the calipers on the brakes red, same exact Brembos - one of that I specifically recall.
This is what I found, theres a difference in P3D- and P3D+ or was I believe they only sell the P3D+ now Spoiler: Brakes https://model3ownersclub.com/threads/performance-brakes-or-not.7423/#post-133805 starting at post #15 and really post #16
they're unveiling the model y on march 14 wonder if it's ever produced. i'm guessing not considering the inventory liquidation and wholesale layoffs of staff.
I’m really interested to see how much of an impact this has on charge rates. Rumors that it could cut charge times in half.
Will be interesting to see, I think they might try to add storage packs to try and curb those rates during peak times.
Haha my bad I took your post as charge rates in $ form, as far as time? Rumors on reddit have the 20-80% time cut in half which would be 13-15 minutes if true, we’ll see when they unveil it.
Depends on battery size and how much charge is needed but for a road trip where you’re trying to get max distance before charging you can see 45-55 minute charge times. But the chargers are built around restaurants so you go eat while waiting. For short trips you might have about a 15 minute charge. That’s why these new chargers are so interesting. If they can get the long range models full charges down to 25-30 minutes that would be huge for all the people that say you can’t use an electric vehicle for road trips.
So the current top superchargers vary their rate over the time, in the beginning from 0-50% you will see the highest SOC (strength of charge). From then on it tapers intentionally by Tesla to protect the battery. So starting from a 6% charge with 19 miles 125 mi / 201 km over 15 minutes 176 mi / 283 km over 25 minutes 225 mi / 362 km over 40 minutes 267 mi / 429 km over 60 minutes 286 mi / 460 km over 75 minutes
If it's really 20-25 minutes for near full charge that's about the time it takes to fill the tank, hit the head, grab a snack, walk the pup, stretch the legs etc.
Yea that’s what I’m more excited about than the Model Y. If they can get charge times from 20% to 80% in the 13 to 15 minute range that’s huge.
20-25 minutes isn't awful but come on man I can fill my Grand Cherokee tank and take a piss and be back on the road in about 6-8 minutes.
With all of the news over the last week I couldn’t help myself Bought 7 $275 puts that expire on 4/5 for 15.05 Back in the game baby
