Ross didn't give us much trouble, but OU's offense is a completely different monster than that Washington team.

We tried our hardest to give Washington a chance. Sincerely hope we don’t implore that strategy against OU

We didn’t have an offensive gameplan, which I don’t think we’ll be an issue this go-round. My biggest fear is our issues getting people lined up defensively, especially with the speed and efficiency the OU offense will work at. We need to make them work for their points.

Texas did a decent job of that last week by cutting out the chunk plays in the run game. All of the explosive plays came in the passing game.
Oklahoma ran the ball quite effectively last year on Georgia so I am curious if they can do it on Alabama. They don’t have a running back as good as Rodney Anderson but Trey Sermon should be healthy again and Kyler’s running ability opens it up.

OU, why has your defense been so bad? It is personnel? Scheme? I haven't followed recruiting, but I would assume you have 4/5* on your whole roster like most top-end schools.

Kyler and Co. will get theirs. I just don't see how we don't score 50+ absent some flukey shit.

We have two total 5 stars.

One 5 star and he's a True Freshman, Brendan 'Bookie' Radley-Hiles. Started every game except the Big XII championship bc he seemed to be regressing.
The other is a 4th year LB who has improved our run D over the last few games (He didn't really play this season until after the first texas game).

    DL: (2) 4 stars, (1) 3 star
    LB: (1) 5 star, (1) 4 star, (1) 3 star
    DB: (1) 3 star, (4) 4 stars

Our main issue on D is the lack of tackling ability. Freak athlete at MLB is a weak tackler. DB's, outside of Tre Brown, are scared of tackling as well.

On top of the tackling, we tend to align our DB's 10 yards off the LOS so routine quick throws turn to big plays.

Edit: Forgot to mention that we have our DL on gap assignment only. They're not trying to get to the QB most of the time. Just trying to hold their ground. Occasionally we'll play 4 down lineman and actually try to move the QB off his spot. Good things usually happen when we do this, but it is rare.

We switched to a 4-3 base from a 3-4 for Texas and pulled Bookie and put Norwoods little ass at safety. That's the first time we've done any of that this year and i think everyone can agree the D looked better against Texas. I'm assuming that's what we're taking into the playoffs too.

So some issues were probably Mike Stoops scheme but tackling for whatever reason has been our biggest issues and bad angles in secondary

I would think it would become a pretty tricky situation to accept a job from OU while you are gameplanning to play them. The rumors say talks never progressed very far with OU, but I'm not ruling out that they didn't progress because he said "I can't talk with you right now, but get back to me after January 7th." I hope not, but we will see.

No one knows anything until after the game IMO.

I think Pete is smart enough to realize staying at Alabama, getting a raise every year, and taking over for Tosh in the next couple of years is a much better career path.

Not sure I agree with this. What's he getting paid now? 500-600?

He'd more than double his salary immediately and he knows he'd be calling defense along side the best offensive coach in the game.

OU doesn't need an elite defense. Just a good one.

Pete is going to get bumped to 1-1.2 with the understanding he's DC after Tosh within the next 2 years and tosh gets bumped to 1.5. Just my opinion but I think Golding stays

Tosh was making a million last year as a position coach with Pruitt at 1.3 as DC. Golding is the new Tosh.

I heard the Lincoln pulled back on the negotiation when we got matched up with Bama. He knew if he waited another month, his offense would expose Bama's defense so badly that he'd be able to get Golding on discount.

Our current staff salary is actually relatively low for what you would expect at Bama. Largely because we hired 9 new assistants out of our 10 total last offseason.

7th in the country in total assistant salary behind Ohio State, Auburn, Clemson, A&M, LSU and UGA.

That 10th assistant provides for a nice little rotation of fired coaches on the cheap for us. Move Freeze, RichRod, Butch in there next.

Or he could go to OU, continue to have shit defenses because the lack of importance placed on it goes all the way to the high school level out there and have his rep take a hit.

The reality is Oklahoma only needs a top 40 defense. So it's not like it's a hard job.
Better than that would be great but honestly we just need those 5 or 6 stops a game and we can almost do that with what we have now.

Since 2009 OU average national rank
    Total D - 54.9
    Scoring D - 44.8

Take away 2009 when they were ranked 8 and 7
    60.1
    50.1

I'm sure a hot name in defensive coaching is chomping at the bit to jump into that. Add in that he would be leaving the tutelage of one of the best defensive coaches in the country.

With as fast paced as the offenses are, even good defenses don't look good on paper. That's the point.

  40. M3

M3 I have a dossier on all of you

It's a different scheme though. OU needs someone to run a pace defense to compliment the O.

There's not a lot of DC's that can say they successfully defend these power spread offenses consistently or can run the kind of defense those offenses need to compliment them.

It comes down to if he feels OU's style of play is going to become a new normal in CFB I guess.

It'll come down to "I can go to OU and have top 40 D's and never get looked at for a HC gig bc my D doesn't look great on paper but make $1.5m a year for it or I can sit here for a year or 2 max and then become DC of a top 3 D and become a HC in a year or 2."

People keep throwing around this top 15 statistic for OU and I don't really get where it comes from. The best objective metric for measuring CFB stats is S&P+ and according to that OU has played 2 top 15 offenses (OSU and WVU) and 3 top 25 offenses (TT). Alabama has played 3 top 15 offenses (Mizzou, OM, UGA) and 4 top 25 offenses (A&M).

Sorry to bring this post up again. Just a stupid stat that keeps getting floated out there that means jack shit

That's just silly. He can be a rare breed of coach that has experience succesfully slowing the high powered offenses no one likes to scheme against. Like Venables.

There's not a major program in the country who would mind having something like that. Including Alabama.

You guys are acting like these big time coaches are betas and would be too afraid of failing so they'll turn down jobs at a blueblood college football program that has appeared in 4 of the 5 CFPs.

Y'all may very well be right about Golding, but I don't think he turns it down because he's afraid of tarnishing his brand.
