I would but it's way out of my way - that's been on my list for a while. I hit Fox Bros (as I always do) on the way in. Figured I would get some pork to go from Community Q on the way home. I would hit Hattie B's but that's asking for an unpleasant episode at a rest stop somewhere near Covington.
Is the pulled pork at Heirloom good enough to bring a couple lbs home? I'm not a big lunch eater. I was going to pick up some meet to go at Heirloom or Community Q.
The spicy Korean pork at Heirloom is chopped, and yes, it’s worth bringing home. Honestly, everything on the menu is. Sauces and sides are amazing, too. Highly recommend getting a beef rib if they have them.
Do what? By the purist definition, BBQ is pulled or chopped pork with vinegar. Brisket is brisket. Ribs are ribs. And no matter how good Heirloom's brisket and ribs are, I cannot imagine they are better than Lewis BBQ in Charleston...which I have daily access to.
Lewis only does beef ribs on Saturdays...if there is better brisket on this planet I have not had it.
The brisket is worth trying, but isn’t in that purist sense like Lewis or Franklin’s. Their collard greens are great though.
There’s nothing “imitation” about Lewis. You think Aaron invented brisket? With that said, I’ll defer to you as I have not had Franklin’s.
Lewis came from Franklin's restaurant. It is essentially Franklin's in SC. It is very very good, too. Actually has a better atmosphere tho with the outdoor area
Community Q Report: Brisket Sandwich - liked the Texas toast. Didn’t like the brisket much. It was tender and juicy like really good roast beef - it just wasn’t good brisket. No smoke flavor at all. No bark. No smoke ring. Pork - better than the brisket. Not great but good. Liked the KC sauce a lot as a brisket sauce. I should have gone to Heirloom but CQ is listed as one of the top spots in Atlanta consistently. It was nothing special. I know their Mac and cheese is great because I make the same recipe at home. But the meat was average. Fox Bros is much better. I’ve honestly found Atlanta BBQ to be overrated in general. Best meal of the trip was Superica.
Lewis had his own spot in Austin - I ate there. He had established himself in Austin as a go-to spot before he ever came to CHS. It was a permanent food truck of sorts but still an established spot. Maybe he worked with Aaron but that’s been a while.
He never had his own place. He helped Franklin start Franklin's then left and helped another person start La BBQ, then left to start Lewis in Charleston. I think Lewis's is much better than La BBQ. That's literally straight from his website
Which Superica location did you eat at? I think the Optimist consistently has my favorite food in Atlanta. That or Beetle Cat.
Buckhead but have been to Krog as well. I generally didn’t venture too far from the hotel due to traffic.
Point is he was the man behind the barbecue and if you Googled La BBQ his name was the one most prominent in the reviews. When he first opened Lewis here it was very similar to La BBQ but over time he has evolved - especially with his sides.
Lmao, no. The people that own la BBQ are essentially Texas BBQ royalty. It wasn't his place. His first place was Lewis BBQ.
The point - which you seem to be continually missing - is that the BBQ was Lewis’ BBQ and he was the man most often mentioned in reviews, etc. Who owned it was always secondary to who the pit master was. This is not debatable. Here’s one good article but there are many, many more. https://www.texasmonthly.com/list/the-50-best-bbq-joints-in-the-world/la-barbecue/
When Lewis first opened in Charleston, everything down to the sides was identical to La Barbecue. Why? Because it was Lewis’ menu at La Barbecue. He was the man behind the food. He ran the place for all practical purposes. He also became part-owner so you’re wrong twice numb nuts.
https://www.dallasobserver.com/rest...ecue-road-trip-to-austins-la-barbecue-7550853 In this review from 2015 in the Dallas Observer, Lewis is literally the only person mentioned by name when it comes to La Barbecue.
https://austinot.com/la-barbecue-austin Another story on La Barbecue where Lewis is prominently (and solely) highlighted. It was his place for all practical intents and purposes. It’s moronic to say otherwise.
Has anyone been to Fellaship? Cam Newton's restaurant cigar bar he opened? Food looks good, but I'm not trying to smell like a cigar for the remainder of the evening. Trying to find a decent place I haven't been before the ATLUTD game tonight.
It was a Gin Buckets idea so I was a little skeptical, but Daily Tavern across from Parish in Inman Park was a good little sports bar that meant I didn't have to deal with ridiculous Hampton and Hudson on a Saturday.
good to know. Walked by there on Sunday and it looked pretty deserted, but will definitely check it out.
It makes me feel kind of weird and slightly icky that the best BBQ in my home county is called “Ohio Hog” and has Buckeye shit all over the walls. Never had any bbq this good in all the Midwest states I lived.
Going to Athens with a buddy tomorrow to see Jason Isbell. Any recommendations on bars for us to watch football beforehand and also bars for afterward for two 27 year old single guys?
one of the more fun things about Athens is just wandering from bar to bar, they're all walking distance but stay west of Lumpkin and you'll avoid the undergrad crowd. Roadhouse and Nowhere should be good for watching games and they're close to the Theatre. Go to Creature Comforts. no idea about afterwards
So I just ate the best donuts I ever had... 5 Daughters in PCM is incredible. I'm not really a donut guy -- I typically don't even like them -- but was forced to try one tonight and holy shit they are delicious. Sublime was my fav, but not anymore. Highly recommend giving it a try. Vanilla creme is probably the best of the 2 flavors I tried, but maple was incredible as well.
Anyone ever bought tickets directly from the Fox Theatre website, trying to buy tix for the Avett Bros tomorrow night and it's forcing me to buy additional passes to the Marquee Club which i'm not interested in
From what I saw tomorrow is sold out so that’s probably the only way to get in. I bought six the day they went on sale.
