I like rain above a certain temperature. Tonight was not quite there. So five mind-numbingly boring miles on a treadmill. I just went to the gym because I needed to, but had gone pretty hard on the weights yesterday. Decided to not let the rain keep me from logging some miles. Bleh. There is no music good enough to make miles on a treadmill fun.
Funnest run of my life was a 10 miler in freezing rain. Eyebrows and beard had icicles along with me weighing 10 pounds more when the run was over. That's all I have, still not able to run :(
I used to do my cardio at the gym. I would remember drudging through 30 min of cardio and constantly looking at my watch and the timer on the machine. I finally said fuck that I'll go run it cycle afterwards. I've never gone back. Fuck any type of cardio at a gym.
Good long form interview with Martin Gabala who studies HIIT, and describes a lot of the science behind why interval training works. I figured some in this thread may be interested. http://tim.blog/2017/01/23/the-one-minute-workout-designed-by-scientists-dr-martin-gibala/
Decided to really ramp up my training and actually try to hit my goal of a sub 20 5K. Tempo run yesterday morning, 1.5 warm up at 9 min/mi, 2 at 7:45 min/mi, and another 1.5 at 9 min/mi. 3 mile recovery run at 9 min/mi today. Long run (9 min/mi with some quicker miles mixed in) coming up this weekend.
I don't have a specific time frame, I'm actually training for some longer distance races and a sub 20 5K should be a byproduct of that (fingers crossed). What's your plan???
Pretty much the same thing here. I haven't really done any targeted training. I just run and run more and faster times have been the byproduct of that. My goal is to get that sub-20 5k this year though.
1:40 in the Miami half marathon yesterday. 57 F and raining. Pretty happy with that. Primary goal was to beat my previous best of 1:43. Tougher goal was to go sub-1:40, missed it by a few seconds. Next time! Running more works! 02/14/16 2:28 time, 11:19 pace 11/06/16 1:50 time, 8:24 pace 11/19/16 1:43 time, 7:55 pace 01/29/17 1:40 time, 7:41 pace
been averaging about 30 miles the past few weeks and got a 12 miler on trails this past weekend feels going to get some longer runs in
Kinda funny, as everyone knows ive been putting in a bunch of miles lately and my body is getting used to it. Last weekend I ran 18 and wasnt even sore....this past Saturday I went and threw the football around with my buddy for an hour, we were doing routes and stuff and making sharp cuts, but really nothing that taxing. Two days later I'm still sore as shit, my back hurts, my core hurts, my groin hurts and just in general it hurts to walk. Just goes to show you how specifically running trains your body for just that.
Ran last week (3 runs about 10 total miles) for the first time since November. Just got lazy after Thanksgiving. Then tried to run in the afternoons after work which didn't happen and then kept fighting off a cold. Hills are killing me. Really need to get my strength back up and planning on running another Half in June. Feels good to be back.
Oh yeah? I did a 5:42 mile today ....ok not really but now I do want to test my mile time. may be closer to 6:00! one day seeing sub-6 will be cool.
Holy hell, if I ever break 8, my fat old ass will be moving. Just registered for the flying pig half May 7. I considered the full, but the time to train for a full would not be conducive to family stuff. I may seek one out in the fall. We'll see.
Been playing pick-up basketball the past couple weeks. Completely different type of cardio. Hopefully it helps my speed a bit when I get back running outside consistently again.

Oh I know, just wanted to like and admire it. Same, just wanted to like and admire. You guy's times are my white whale. And no to a duel, I probably couldn't even keep up with you for a quarter.
So apparently my knee problems are part of a larger problem caused by growing too fast during puberty. Because I grew faster than my muscles could stretch, they turned my legs and spine to "minimum stretch" position, which is why I've always walked kinda funny. So now I get to stretch said muscles out and relearn how to walk and stand. Yaaaaaay
Ugh. Tell me about it. I was able to get out for four miles Tuesday. It was supposed to be a strength day following 5 treadmill miles on Monday, but the weather tempted me outside and it felt great.
I've been going to the gym around 7 every night and only allowing myself to check the time/distance at the TV timeouts of whatever college basketball game is on at the time. Helps a little.
I get it. It's funny, I enjoy podcasts when walking, cutting grass, driving, doing housework, etc. I can't do them when running. I like the rhythm and motivation of music. Then along came the treadmill runs this winter. I've found the need to entertain my brain overpowers the need for motivation and I prefer podcasts when stuck inside.
Leaving work this afternoon for a much needed greenway run. Love this time year as it's not crowded, and the temps right now in Atlanta are in the 50's-60's.
Yep, I've been doing podcasts as well. What I like about them is that I'm not subconsciously counting the time in my head (1 song of about 3 minutes, 2 songs so its been about 7 minutes, etc.) allows me to get lost in it for longer periods of time. When I run outside I like the music because there's plenty to look at and get lost in and I don't need to rely on the audio as much.
So Ive been trying to correct my over pronation when I run due to developing a bunion on my left big toe joint. My hip joint has been sore as shit on my longer runs days. All this in addition to tendentious in my patellar tendon. I don't like all these problems that come with ramping up miles
Nothing like some good old stomach distress to interrupt what was supposed to be a 10 mile run this morning. Still got 9 done but it sucked.
Look at pages 3-4 of that 50 mile course map/elevation here: http://s7d1.scene7.com/is/content/TheNorthFaceBrand/Site/ECS/CA/50MileCA161012.pdf 7:10/mile pace for the winner Zach Miller
4 weeks until my half marathon. Running 10 miles every Saturday morning as part of my training. Last 3 weeks' paces: 1/21 - 8:48 per mile 1/28 - 8:36 per mile 2/04 - 8:26 per mile An 8 minute pace on race day would be awesome for me and way beyond my initial goal. I'm thinking it's doable now.
Just wanted to say that some of you guys amaze me. Trying to get back into shape and run some 5ks this year. 2 years ago I had myself running them in around 30 minutes. Had some back issues come up and had to stop running, put on a little weight and trying now to get back into shape. Doing the couch to 5k thing and my best is around a 13 Minute mile so far. Fastest I can run without pain is about 5.4-5.5 mph.
Just finished a half marathon at 1:54. My son of a whore Fitbit apparently underestimates the distance by 1.5 miles, so the last 1.5 miles following what I thought was my final push sucked.
Awesome work yes you'll definitely hit that goal. Make it 7:59 just to say you ran a sub 8 min half! How hard are you running those 10 milers?
Ending them with a little gas left in the tank for sure. So I'm optimistic. Getting easier to recover afterwards every time too.
10 miles is a decent "maintain" long run day right? I don't see point in running longer than that right now. Marathon training doesn't start till May. IT'S 5:30 TIME TO RUN
