Do you have a break down of your training to get there? I’m trying to get to 5:30 from 6:15 and have been at it a four months or so.
I've never trained specifically for speed to get my mile or 5k time faster. I've trained for 2 marathons and in the middle of training for 3rd. Pretty much just 3 things: (a) increase weekly mileage slowly and (b) run more consistently and (c) add in weekly "workouts", speed intervals (which I've run at about 60 seconds faster than goal marathon pace), tempo runs (marathon pace), and some hill repeats. See my last marathon training plan/log here. 18 weeks from Jun-Sep 2017. Averaged 5.1 days running per week and 37.2 miles per week. All during that time I never ran faster than about a 6:50/mile pace for speed intervals. 2015 = 70 miles @ 11:48/mile avg pace 2016 = 1016 miles @ 9:07/mile 2017 = 1396 miles @ 8:48/mile. Shooting for 1500!
Interesting, I wonder if my speed work has been too close to 1mile race pace, even well under on my 200s and 400s. Not making much progress. Logging 25-30 miles a week at about 4:50/km which is like 7:50/mile.
Maybe run more and run slower? Do you do any long runs? Like 10+ miles? And still do 1 fast workout a week.
Anyone have a good rec for a cold gear running jacket or vest? Also, what sort of lamp do you recommend? I want one that goes across the chest as opposed to the head, but the ones on Amazon don’t have great reviews. Thanks
Maybe over training? Our PT test in the Army is two miles. So a little longer but still similar to more of a sprint like the one mile. The Army research shows that soldiers who run three days a week for a maximum of 30 minutes do just as good as soldiers that run 5 days a week on the PT test. The soldiers who run 3 days a week are also less likely to be injured.
I think the mileage is fine but too fast a pace. No need for so much moderate paced stuff. Need to do more of my runs as slow easy paces and a little speed work.
19:33 5k Amazing how much is just mental with this running thing. Did I really physically improve enough since Thanksgiving to improve 5k time by 1min11sec? No way *EDIT* Also it was 18 degrees cooler today, which makes a big difference!
On my way to a 10k that was cancelled last week because of the la fires. Hoping to finish between 45-60 min.
They have around a million people who are routinely tested in a two mile run so their data is pretty reliable. We only ran two or more miles two times outside of our PT test during basic training and we all dropped significant time on our two mile run.
I believe you. It just goes against what I read about "if you want to get faster, run more". Literally that is the prescription from all the experts. And it seems to work for me. Everyone is different. Also I'm not training daily in the Army... I sit at a computer job 9-5.
Note to self; wear more clothes when it’s 30s and windy. Thought running hard would warm me up, nope.
Have any of you done any fundraising for races? Thinking of applying for a Boston bib. Would have to raise $5,000 but I think this is the only year I'll live here so may as well?
Went to fleet feet and got measured for my first fitted pair of running shoes. Was cool to see them map the foot. Ended up with the New Balance 880v7s and some super feet inserts. Turns out I have a wide foot and narrow heel with high arches so it explains why I’m miserable in boots.
Finishing up the year with highest mileage week ever this week 51.7 miles. 1517 miles on the year. Hit my 1500 goal. Bring on 2018, 2000 miles! Happy New Year, TMB runners!
Averaged a little over 3 miles a day for the year. Next year is lifting more, running less (sorry running thread).
I somehow reached 750 miles running this year. My goal is 3000 miles combination of running and cycling next year.
Did 10K yesterday with a temperature of 16 and about 2-3 inches of snow underfoot. Conditions held me to about a minute per mile slower than I would have liked.
Pretty sure I have a stress fracture in my leg. Was shooting for a sub 5:40 mile by years end but that’ll have to wait now. Started running about 6 months ago amassed nearly 700 miles over that time running 4ish times per week. Goal for 2018 was going to be a 18:36 5k but I’ll have to play it by ear to see how much volume I can take.
signed up for this with my brother and his wife today. https://runtheedge.com/run-the-year-2018/ I'm currently around at 17-20 miles a week so I should hold my end up pretty well
What's up slackers Odds of actually hitting 54 miles this week as it says on my running plan? First post of 2018. Boom.
Just wanted to comment that I miss contributing to this thread. Haven't been able to do any type of exercise (walk, run, crunches, curls, pull ups...nothing) since July. Finally have back surgery scheduled for next month. Can't wait to get this pain resolved and back to being fit. I feel like a worthless piece of space right now. Doctor said I'll be down 4-6 weeks after the surgery so it's almost gonna be a full 10 months before I'm back to exercising.
Miami Marathon in 5 days. Disappointed about the weather outlook, but whatever, can't control that. Race start is supposed to be 71 F, windy, and raining. Ugh. Training for this was consistent but did not follow plan as written. Averaged running 5.2 days per week and 36 miles per week, when my plan had me averaging over 40. I've consistently completed my strength/speed workouts and tempo runs every week, so hopefully that will pay off. The other thing that is different is I've only completed 3 long runs (16+ miles) in the past 12 weeks. 16, 16, and 18.
Anyone here ever get runner's gut? I run 7 miles and always have a bad case of diarrhea about an hour or 2 after the run.
I had this for the first time yesterday. I’m hoping it’s just because I was a fatty over the weekend. But I shit like 7 times yesterday.
