Ran my first half marathon this weekend at the Rock and Roll New Orleans. My longest training run was 7 miles and I wasn’t able to run much leading up to the race so it was pretty miserable. I think I’m hooked though.
Thoughts on running a half without paying? I obviously wouldn’t get the shirt the medal or the timing chip. Just wondering if this would be seen as a big deal.
Your 100% right. Just needed to hear it. Thanks I usually run a half in October but I am not sure I will this year. So I don’t want to pay right now for something I might not run.
I carry a water bottle in my hand. Single key and ID in shorts pocket. LOL at taking my phone to the one activity where I get a break from the electronic world
If you want to do it without paying, just go outside and run 13.1 miles. If you want the extra adrenaline etc of running with a group you prob need to come out the pocket to help support that
Like I said you guys are right and if I run it I’ll pay. I am already sighed up to raise money for St Jude’s Children hospital so I might as well follow through. It was a shitty thought and I feel bad for even entertaining it for a second. I’ll see if they offer the “insurance” which some races do
Last long taper run in the books. Georgia Publix Marathon next weekend It's my first Marathon. Here we go.
have done it before pacing someone I say do it, just cut off the course at the 13 mile marker and dont take refreshments along the way
I haven't run a real race since my freshman year of hs cross country. Have woken up on 2 seperate occasions and said I'm gonna run a half today and gone out and done it. My goal is half ironman but gotta get into biking more. Swimming is a breeze for me, know I can do a half, gotta go get a bike.
Ha. I honestly have no idea where that run came from. Haven’t been feeling good lately, I did a hard 10x800 workout on Wednesday and when I went out for my run on Friday I was just gonna stay in the low 7s...then I let loose and pr’d by almost two minutes. Not so Humble brag for those who aren’t connected with me on Strava I went 39:31 at 6:21 a mile. Felt like I was flying.
Wore the hell out of my Ghost 9's so I went to my local running shop and had a fitting done. Tried 8 different pairs and surprised myself by liking the New Balance 880's the best. Two runs and 10 miles in and I feel like I made a great choice. Great cushioning for hauling my 235 pounds around the neighborhood and good energy return. The only downside so far is that on both runs the balls of my feet went numb like they aren't getting enough circulation despite the fact that I was wearing knee high compression socks. It was something that happened from time to time before (just not as extreme) so not sure if it's only the shoes or my stride or what. On another note, passed 200 miles run for the year yesterday -- more in 10 weeks than I've run in the 22 years since I left high school combined
I got the same fitting from fleet feet. Mine felt similar the first time I wore them. That’s awesome on the 200 miles. Im at 97 which is by far the more than I’ve ever run. Feels great. I just ran my fastest two miles ever.
Well part of the funds of the race go towards the race refreshments And cutting out at 13 so you don’t cross the finish line and they try and give you a medal Plus I’ve been to a race where security grabbed a guy because he didn’t have a bib and tried cross the fines line, but that was a bigger race so prob wouldn’t happen at a smaller one
My thinking was this. Right now I am not running that much so I am thinking of not running. I didn’t want to pay $60 for a race I might not run while not a whole lot i don’t want to throw away $60 for nothing. Then I thought to myself what if I change my mind a day or two before. What’s the edict on running a race without paying. Since so many itt run races I thought I’d ask here. It’s just a kind of what if thing. Hope that makes sense
I would not. Even if you don't take a t shirt, medal, or gatorade, a large portion of the costs goes towards paying the police department to close the roads/direct traffic etc. and you'd be taking advantage of that without contributing to it.
me and the wife are hosting a 5k soon pretty excited but it's expensive, venue/police costs about $1000, then you have to get insurance, a timer ($175) bibs, website, refreshments, tshirts
Ran my first half. Really happy with the result. The adrenaline from running with a bunch of other people and all the crowds was wild.
For me no. The only thing I used on paid was weekly and yearly mileage goal thing. I didn’t really don’t know how to use the advanced analytics so that’s wasted on me. a.tramp uses them and understands them more so he’d probably be a better person to ask about those. I do notice my rides and runs are uploaded a lot slower on the free than they were on the paid. For me free is plenty.
it's nice to see average lap pace since Strava only breaks it up by the mile on the free version but if you have a Garmin, garmin connect app is free and does all of the advanced analytic stuff that strava premium probably has
I have stopped running do to fear of another knee injury but as far as cycling goes, I find the advanved metrics invaluable for customizing my training and seeing the areas I need to improve upon. Since I started using Premium I have been able to really fine tune my performance. This is not a paid advertisement. What platform do you use Connect on? I have found it to be clunky and extremely tedious and frustrating on my devices (iPad, Mac, android phone) at best. I really like all the data they have but I find it infuriating to try to navigate to it without a window being improperly formatted on my screen. Very easily could be user error as I am extremely techtarded.
Iphone and yeah the user experience isn't very good. It use to take me about 3 mins to figure out how to even view my latest activity. but once you get it down its nice, I normally just look at my avg lap paces and then the pace graph with the elevation overlay
Anyone know how to figure out my 5k time for a run longer than 5k without it being a PR (Garmin Connect) or top 3 time (Strava)?
And just use the cumulative time and not worry about the other 0.1? I would still have the same issue of tracking it over time.
How do you all handle nutrition mid-race? I absolutely crashed late race. I took water every mile from 3-8 and Gatorade every mile thereafter except 11 which didn't have a stop. I took half a Gu around mile 7, but almost threw up because chocolate at 55 degrees is way more disgusting than chocolate at 30 degrees.
Shit I think I misunderstood your question. I just stick to whatever I do on my long runs. Water/Gatorade every other mile after about 4 gel packs at at 5 and somewhere between 8-10.
went to FSU Relays last night for the high school 3200m Invitational. 1st was 8:52, 2nd was 8:54, and 3rd was 9:01. hell of a race. the 1st place girl ran 10:22 gonna go back today for the 1600. theres a chance someone goes sub4
Hi, I’m 45 miles into the year’s goal of 1,000. Back at it after a disastrous last year and winter. Feels good.
Planned to run 8 miles this morning, went 10 instead and set a new 10K PR (went from 46:14 to 44:20). I still was bringing up the rear in the group I was running with.
Ran 12 during the Chelsea-Tottenham game on the treadmill then 5 with my brother tonight. Around 10 a mile, didn't push it at all. Feeling pretty good but 17 is a quite a lot, thankfully off work tomorrow and getting piss fucking drunk.
Anybody have tips for running with their dog? I've started trying to take mine with me (he's about a year old) and it's usually a bumpy first 3-5 minutes until he finally figures out what we're doing. I kind of want to get one of those waist leashes but still feel like I'm training him and want to have a little more control.
My dogs are naturally good at running with me, so I don't have any real training recommendations. I will say that you need to be careful about running with puppies while they are still developing or you can cause serious skeletal issues.
Just joined a run club at a local neighborhood bar, and I've shaved about 20 second per mile off my 10k pace after just doing it a couple times Can't tell you how much easier it is to improve your pace when you have someone to chase or someone chasing you. The club I'm in is more social, but still has people of all abilities. I'd been plateaued for a while and this has definitely helped a lot. I live in an area where there are lots of things like this, but not sure if it's as popular elsewhere. If you can do it, it's a lot of fun and really helps enjoy the lifehack
Yeah I read that and didn't take him on a run for the first year because of it. He hasn't gotten much bigger in 2-3 months so I figure it's safe. I'll double check at his vet appointment in a couple weeks, we're only going once a week or so as is.
