Last long run done for Richmond yesterday, 15 Where is everyone staying for the official RunLyfe race in two weeks?
If you guys want a post-race ridiculous meal, hit up Hogshead Café. Deep fried bacon wrapped hot dog with pulled pork on top(have another that you can get ribs on top), so good. All their stuff I've tried there is fabulous.
I’ve wore the tread off my hoka’s, need to get another pair soon. Looking to starve myself under 195 lbs and start working towards some sprint tri’s next spring/summer. It’ll be a lot of lap swimming and stationary bike this winter.
Swimming is my best/ favorite part of it but takes the longest to master IMO. With any other cardio you breath when you want with swimming you have to wait to breath and think about it.
Yeah, I think something is horribly wrong with my form/breathing. I can run long distances no problem but get winded swimming literally 50m. Some of my friends who swim have offered to help me with my form so I'll probably take them up on that this winter.
I would if you’re serious into wanting to do a tri. Maybe get on YouTube and check out some freestyle vids, I’ve used it to tweak my form.
I probably will. I have a few races in January/February I want to train a lot for but I want to mix in some swimming instead of lifting on my off days.
I haven't been following this thread recently, but congrats! My wife and I did the MCM last year. Such a great race.
https://vimeo.com/user22570191 This page has a lot of swimming drills you can use to improve your form. It helped me tremendously when I was training for my HIM.
Question for a beginner runner, started running about 2-3 miles a day 3 times a week. I have been having issues with tight calves. Do compression socks work?
I can’t answer this but nip this thing in the bud, tight calves will lead to all kinds of foot issues if you let it go on.
I wear compression pants and they help but your issue might be stretching. Do you stretch enough (before and after)? Also foam rolling really helps.
I do stretch about ten minutes and do some foam rolling at the CrossFit gym. I probably don’t do enough of either.
Practice practice practice and work on your form and build up your lungs which can also help you with running. I swam competitively for most my childhood and teen years and now do open water swimming. Still have it but first time I jumped in open water to swim, thought I was gonna drown. It's way different that regular swimming. Consistent kicking, smooth strokes, long follow through under water would be my main tips but first you need a consistent stroke and breathing. Once you get that, can worry about sighting and all the other shit which isn't that hard.
Running a half in Atlanta on Thanksgiving morning. Looking to PR that one considering I’ll be coming from Colorado at altitude Bit the bullet and signed up for a 50k in April just outside Zion National Park in Utah. Have never done any race beyond a half but feeling like I need a challenge Currently at 5’9” and probably 172ish. I spent the summer adding muscle in the gym from around 165, which was where I normally hovered around. Not at all concerned about the half and think I’ll be fine, but I’d now like to shift focus after that to getting leaner and hopefully closer to 160 by April to help me out. Any additional tips for 50k trail race training? I’m planning to really work on legs, back, and core though the winter in the gym while mixing in trail running and maybe throwing in some stationary bike work to give my joints a rest. All while trying to ski most of the winter.
Few friends from my gym just did the rim to rim and we trail run all the time. Nothing close to 50k though I suppose common sense stuff like familiarize yourself with the terrain and do some downhill. I hate it, but can bite you in the ass without training for it
Ankle stability is huge. Obviously running trails will help. Exercises on a balance pad or Bosu ball will also help. Run hills and work on picking up your feet especially when you're fatigued.
I do have a trail running/mountain biking mountain within 15 mins from my house and I plan to use that as my main training area. It’s got some good varied terrain that I’ve used often before. I’m a strong and frequent hiker and this summer I mixed up long ones with hiking/running hybrid. Day hikes that are 10-16 miles (2-4K+ elevation gain) were my norm with a couple 20+ mile days in there. The good news is the Zion race will at least only max out at 5,500 elevation and I already live at that level so altitude won’t be an extra factor. I’m definitely thinking some strategic work in the gym could pay off
Im in the same boat, I really really want to do an Ironman, and I could do the run and bike with relative ease. I dont think I could swim half a mile without drowning though.
How long do you guys take off after a long run? I didn’t properly cool down or stretch after my half on Sunday so I was pretty sore yesterday. Did a short walk but it hurt like a bitch. Trying to figure if I should take one more day off or if it’s to get back out there today.
I only go once a week for long. Depends on the day of my run. If I go Saturday, I’ll still go to the gym on Sunday. If I run Sunday, it’s at the end of my program for the week, so I’ll take Monday off. My runs max out at 7 miles in trails these days
Getting old sucks. In my youth I’d be out playing basketball or running the day after a marathon. Now I might have to take 2-3 days of nothing more than normal walking after a half. I also used to train better. This time my longest run was an 8 mile one. I did do some 30-40 mile rides.
Did 19 Saturday. The chafing in my groin area was fucking awful. Decided I should get something for it. Have 8 tomorrow (last 8 mile midweek run) and will be trying the stuff out then. Amazing how at one point in life 12 would have been awful and this Saturday it's going to feel easy. Ready to get beyond the 20 miler next Saturday because it'll be shorter ones the next couple weekends after + I'll have a lot of energy at the actual marathon.
I’m shocked at how fresh my legs feel after 1 week of a taper. The next 1.5 weeks are going to be tough not pushing it more on runs.
194 miles in October. Highest mileage month ever. 8 weeks in a row of 40-45 miles per week. It's starting to feel like the consistency is paying off. Now to bump to 50!
Thanks! Last leg in an hour. I don't think I've ever been this exhausted in my life. I'm so excited to sleep again
4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. 2 days later I just finished running 48 miles. My legs are so sore right now Sneaking in 2 hour naps as often as possible. Actually getting a full nights sleep last night was amazing.
Just picked up a pair of Pegasus 34s at Nike Outlet for $35. I don't really need them but I figured I'd give them a few runs and see if they were worth for that cheap.
Good luck to the marathoners this weekend in Richmond! Weather forecast looks amazing - hope it plays out that way.
Everybody wanna be a marathoner But don't nobody wanna run these longass miles I DO IT THOUGH!!!!!!!!
Yeah watched it couple nights ago. Good watch. Dude just didn't give a fuck and wanted to be the biggest and baddest, health be damned.
