Wife and I spend on average $250 - $300 on food and drinks every week, which includes each of us eating one or two lunches out, and maybe a dinner and brunch out, as well. Mostly we eat at home and take our lunches to work. We could probably save money off our grocery bill, but we buy organic and grass-fed stuff which ups the cost a bit, and I think we're willing to eat that cost (literally). When you do the math, it comes out to around $5 per meal, per person. I can live with that.
I really like it so far. I ordered a weeks worth (smallest amount you can order). So far I have been using it to supplement my diet when I don't have time to prepare a meal or a smoothie and as a snack every once in a while. Or will sometimes have a small glass along with a small dinner. The first time order is pretty nice- they send you a nice air tight pitcher and metal measuring cup for free. The taste is not bad at all. Kind of reminds me of a thicker milk kind of thing. It does have a very slight sweet kind of doughy taste. When I have a meal that is only soylent I don't get too full. I am for sure not hungry- but I am not stuffed at all. Just not hungry anymore.
it also mixes easier than any powder I have ever seen. put a scoop in a nalgene, shake for a few seconds, and you are good to go.
What are some people's go-to "I don't feel like making dinner tonight" meals? I live near a whole foods and will hit up the salad bar or the hot bar, but always end up spending more than I plan. Also have a nearby place that sells salads and soups (including chicken salads, tuna salads, etc.) for 1 for $5.50 or 2 for $10. Next to that is a korean place where you can get a bibimbap bowl for $10. I usually go brown rice or no rice/noodles at all. Those are usually my go-to for when I just can't eat another chicken breast but still want to be pretty healthy. Modified-guilty fast food pleasures include Jimmy Johns (order online, gives you the option to scoop bread out and order no mayo so you don't sound like an asshole. I do something similar at Which Wich.) or Chick Fil A (nuggets only unless I feel like indulging in some fries). I've been able to cut out a lot of the McDonalds/Wendy's/Burger King crap. Not only is it horrible for you, it just doesn't taste good. Not worth it.
Chipotle bowl. double chicken, brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies if i want some extra good fats for the day throw on guac
I live right next to a 'natural' burrito/bowl place and that is usually my go to. 600 cals for a burrito/bowl for dinner and it will fill me up. It is also a super easy thing to make on your own, sometimes I do it with steak instead of chicken.
Chipotle, Publix Rotisserie Chicken, Chick Fil A 4 count strip meal, large fry, spicy chicken sandwich for low bodyfat aesthetics
Asian food is pretty cheap and healthy for the most part too. just can't eat the whole thing in one meal because of the ridiculous portions most asian places give you. split it into two even meals and you're doing alright
Chick fil a sandwich (no butter), grilled nuggets (pretty good with the right sauce) chipotle zoes kitchen and jasons deli have some good options. they also have some calorie bombs. trader joe's frozen chili lime chicken burgers -- take 6-7 min to cook in a skillet. eat on a toasted bun w/ tj's salsa of choice. + frozen microwavable veggies frozen salmon filets. cook in oven in foil with either teriyaki/sriracha or combo of 2 parts soy sauce 1 part zatarain's horseradish. + frozen microwavable veggies brinner i keep a good bit of frozen tj stuff around for easy meals. turkey meatballs, bbq chicken pizza, chow mein, and chicken fingers all have mostly reasonable macros and take no effort to cook.
ON Whey does seem to be everyone's go to. If you want the most bang for your buck keep an eye on slickdeals for Myprotein. It has good reviews, mixes well, and is super cheap. Here was one of the recent deals...11 lbs of protein for $23. http://slickdeals.net/f/7805601-11-...hey-protein-unflavored-or-banoffee-25-shipped
People on the slickdeals thread said it was good. They had another deal last month for 11lbs of any flavor for $45.
MTS whey is pretty legit. The cookies and cream is incredibly good mixed with milk. If you use the coupon code "maxx15" I think that gets you 30% off so it's not too pricey.
up until recently I had always thought/heard that refried beans were unhealthy-ish. like not to be consumed if you're a health nut. Found out that was false and have been getting them pretty regularly instead of black beans
Its always hard for me to pass up on the black beans. Love the texture of them. One of my go to easy lunches is leftover chicken breast/steak, basmati or brown rice, black beans and mixed with Aardvark hot sauce. Easy, cheap and delish.
I love blackbeans still and this is probably one of those newfound freedom phases that will pass. just good to know that i can eat them and still be health.
This thread is killer- ordered on whey today,. Haven't tried ground turkey since college but that meal with tomatillo sounds awesome and I'll be buying that tm. Apple pie protein Shane sounds awesome. Now I know what macros are and lastly you reminded me of the cans of black beans I have I'm my pantry. Just when I was getting sick of the same old routine, you guys provided a new one. Thx, BB
Kroger has pre-seasoned Chicken Leg Quarters for so dang cheap. Is the dark meat chicken healthy at all? is there way to possibly make it not taste awful? I was thinking of baking it and then taking the fatty skin off, then maybe mixing the chicken into something....I dunno what to do with my hands...
Dark meat chicken is considered by most to be much tastier. If you trim the fat before hand the macros aren't bad at all, just a decent amount of work to trim it. I have done chicken thighs in the past like that and they are damn tasty.
I have no idea the actual amount I'm getting from food but I do the tablespoon of Benefiber in water for every meal thing.
