chisos mountains and santa elena canyon are must see/hike. Juniper Canyon Trail gets you to the south rim of the chisos. Hike the boquillas canyon trail too.
Ive never hiked it. Ive canoed it 3 or 4 times but its not a super outdoorsy trip, more everyone getting really drunk/high and laughing at everyone who tumps over while all their stuff floats away.
it felt bad to even joke about. he is probably reading this. mickey if you roll through houston and im still alive, i will buy you a beer and some oysters. its been a pleasure posting with you gentlemen.
Ditto everything The42Yardstick said. In the Chisos Mountains I'd specifically recommend the Lost Mines trail. Not an overly taxing hike, can be done in a few hours, and the view at the top is http://www.texashiking.com/Locations/ShowLocation.aspx?LocationID=1403
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfa,_Texas Things that make West Texas awesome: -Big Bend -Marfa -Balmorhea -Davis Mountains/McDonald Observatory
Marfa. Weird little art community not far from Big Bend that has developed over the years. There's literally a Prada store there in the middle of the West Texas desert. http://www.kvia.com/news/Indie-band...Paso/-/391068/18399006/-/a43jo1z/-/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfa_lights Lots of people move there from NYC, and you know, do stuff.
Marfa used to be a tiny ranching town out in the middle of nowhere. At some point in the 60s/70s a bunch of hippies from Austin migrated out there and turned it into an artist colony of sorts. Donald Judd, a major figure in the American minimalist art/sculpture/architecture scene came out there and legitimized Marfa as an artist haven. It's now kind of an eclectic mix of crusty West Texans and hippie artisans. Lots of shops, art galleries, awesome restaurants, neat hotels, and a farmer's market. It has a certain appeal, and even if it doesn't strike your fancy, it's worth a stop if your'e already out that way.
Need some recommendations for Packs (50L probably) and pack tents that will do 2 plus a dog and gear comfortably.
