Just started Us. Haven't seen it yet. I haven't done a good job picking new horror movies to watch this season so hopefully the streak ends. Might just have to figure out a way to do a random pick.
Has anyone here gone to see any of Crispin Glover’s surrealist trilogy? You can only see them in theaters when he’s touring them, he refuses to stream or release physical copies I believe.
It’s worth checking out if you’re into surrealist films or subversive strange films in general: from wiki “Glover made his directorial debut with 2005's What Is It?, a surreal film featuring a cast of actors with Down syndrome. It premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. With a budget of only $150,000, it took almost a decade to complete, and was originally intended to be a short film. Most of the primary footage was shot in 12 days, stretched over a two-and-a-half-year period. Production was mostly funded by Glover's roles in Willard and the Charlie's Angels films. Glover's second film, It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine., was written by Utah writer and actor Steven C. Stewart. Stewart was born with severe cerebral palsy and had been confined to a nursing home for about 10 years. The film is a fantastical psychosexual retelling of life from Stewart's point of view. It premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.[16][17]” Spoiler
Just watched “The Mist” from 2007, based off a Steven King story. Excellent. Not what I expected, so good though.
Just finished Host. Only 59 minutes on Shudder 9.0 - Host - adding it to my rewatch rotation. 8.0 - Us 7.0 - Censor 6.5 - A Town Full of Ghosts 10.0 - Hell House LLC (rewatch) 5.0 - Sator 8.0 - Deadstream 8.0 - As Above, So Below (rewatch) 8.0 - The Poughkeepsie Tapes (rewatch) 7.0 - You Won't Be Alone 6.0 - The Phoenix Tapes '97 6.0 - We Are Still Here 10.0 - Creep (rewatch) 6.0 - Where's Rose
His House was really well done. Meant to watch it when it came out and totally forgot about it. Glad it got recommended to me on Netflix with all the horror stuff I have been watching recently
I love The Mist, fantastic movie. I assume you typo’d 2007. They also have it in black and white which I think is great.
Yup, that's my jam when it comes to movies this time of year. I don't need slasher flicks, I really want movies that fuck with your emotions. The Mist was 100% that. Similarly, We Need To Talk About Kevin. Believe Hereditary is in that vein too, have that in the queue for the weekend.
I know it’s not horror. But I figured it’s movie-specific thread, prob a movie we’ve all seen, and an actor that did a solid job playing an iconic horror character.. The original prob gets more credit than it deserves, but after such a long wait and multiple stop-and-starts, I’ll def watch it. Plus, replacing Jason Mamoa with BS is definitely a good choice.
Some great psych horror that aren’t necessarily the heavy hitters if anyone is interested — Repulsion Funny Games/White Ribbon/Caché (director) Mother! The Lighthouse The Tale Tell Heart 1922 Possession (1981) Killing of a Sacred Deer Possum Hagazussa Diabolique (1955) Cape Fear (1991) I feel like some 90’s gems get overlooked as true psych horror/thrillers like The Crying Game, Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction
I hate that I procrastinated too long with Killing of a Sacred Deer and now it's not available with Prime anymore, maybe I'll just rent it
Started watching The Unkind. This movie fucking sucks. A lot. This feels like The Room or something. Dialog is like a Tommy Wiseau joint. Audio mixing is super weird. Incredible piece of dogshit thus far.
Just started The Taking of Deborah Logan, and I can't remember if I've seen it or if I've just seen the trailer. It just feels very familiar so far.
Hell House LLC 2 is not a great movie but I still enjoyed it. Not nearly as good as the original though.
No, but I saw a live show he put on once. If this is remotely helpful, it was worth the ticket price. He's odd. But entertaining. It was probably close to 20 years ago. Stan brahkage is probably the closest known filmmaker I'd attribute to him but it wasn't film centric
Sorry I'm super late on this thread, but how do yall feel about the multiple Mike Flanagan limited series on Netflix? I'm currently finishing up Midnight Club, here's howd I'd rank it as of now: 1) Midnight Mass 2) Haunting of Hill House 3) Midnight Club 4) Haunting of Bly Manor I need to give his movies a shot. Only seen Hush so far
Haven’t seen Midnight Club yet (I was scared by some reviews itt) but I’d rate the other 3 as you have them.
If you think it’s slow you probably won’t enjoy it. I found it to have some of the best character interactions and story arcs in horror television in awhile. It’s a gawd damn work of art.
I absolutely loved the pacing in Midnight Mass. I rewatched it a second time really recently and just loved re-watching the progression of Father Paul's character.
