I avoided it for years because I didn’t like the idea of a “serious” remake of the original and all the horror remakes thus far had been so fucking bad… but my wife insisted I watch it because she said it was really good and it’s true. It’s like the only good horror remake from the 00s/early 2010s
The idea for the original was supposed to be serious but, budget wise, it turned into what we all love today. They took it to another level with Evil Dead 2 but Rami swears he was making a “serious” horror film.
I remember reading that before but I guess what I mean by “serious” is the failed aforementioned attempts at remaking and updating old horror films as “gritty”, gore-centric, and “real”; Essentially it just removes a lot of the art and nuance that was in the originals. But I’m so glad the Evil Dead franchise is doing a great job.
I haven’t seen this movie since film class in college. Shit stuck with me for a long time. I remember it was so hard to find our professor gave us an extension to allow us to make bootleg VHS copies to hand out to the class.
Nah you’re absolutely correct. It was during that run of gritty remakes/reboots. Nightmare on Elm St, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre….Evil Dead (2013) is definitely the best of the bunch by far.
This board seems to hate Barbarian for some reason. I just wrapped it up a few hours ago, and I enjoyed it.
I respect Barbarian for keeping me guessing the whole time. I couldn’t predict any of the moves it made. For the folks that didn't like it. Did you like X?
I thought X was whatevs. Decent run of the mill horror comedy. Little ode to 70/80’s slasher movies. I thought Barbs was great. I liked that one a lot.
Felt X was really good, lots of fun referential slasher horror shit going on. My main gripe with Barbarian is that it wasn’t consistent. Act 1 was so much better than the rest of the film.
I’m really excited to rewatch this. I haven’t seen it in probably 20+ years. I almost ponied up the $300 for a VHS copy around Halloween last year but decided against it. I still wouldn’t mind having a physical copy.
Listening to the Yeah, But Still podcast. Zac Efron passed on the role that Justin Long took in Barbarian. Probably for the best that he wasn't in this film.
Have any of y'all heard of this movie? I noticed that it's showing at a nearby Regal tonight and I was already thinking about going there to check out the original Friday the 13th on the big screen. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/skinamarink
Yup, sounds more like a scary art piece than a movie. It may be great but I don’t think I’d go expecting a “movie” in the traditional sense.
It was OK, I guess. It’s the type of horror movie art house snobs will rave about but the vast majority of human beings wouldn’t like it.
Thanks for the feedback in this thread. I listened to a couple youtube reviews and also checked out rotten tomatoes and think I'm going to wait to watch this at home sometime and instead just go see the original Friday the 13th tonight.
Not a horror movie but I assume will appeal to most of us on here... https://ihorror.com/halloween-horror-nights-getting-a-permanent-vegas-residency/ Universal’s highly popular fall amusement park event called Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) is getting a permanent Vegas residency according to Deadline.
Watched Speak No Evil (danish film) last night because it’s been on all the year end horror lists and it popped up on shudder. If you’re into the feeling you get in the first 5 minutes of Midsommar then this is for you. The ending is not gonna be for everyone and it is incredibly difficult to watch
Just watched All Quiet On The Western Front which is basically a horror film. Great film, amazing soundtrack
I feel so bad that “psychological” movies like those 2 don’t do much for me. They don’t make me feel scared or uncomfortable. I guess I either spend to much time on my phone or need the visual horror porn or a combination of the two to get the full effect to be scared.
I’m the complete opposite. The shit that could potentially happen to me is what I find the scariest. Gore is ok if there’s a story that seems like it could have actually happened but if it’s in a supernatural setting I just don’t care
FYI Skinamarink hit Shudder, I'll wait for some reviews in here before checking it out. I'm just not excited about it for some reason.
I have to imagine it's going to be the most polarizing horror movie of the year. I for one found it to be pretty terrible and that whole experimental/arthouse horror nice is one I am particularly into.
closer to come and see in that it’s an endurance test with its sadness and brutality, but not nearly as surreal
It is, it’s a good baseline for comparison. Like The Keep is more of a war film that goes all in on the horror/supernatural/religious/surrealism.
Criterion app was really solid for the free trial I had, I just couldn't warrant paying for it with how infrequently I get in the mood to think.
