yeah, that's where I'm at. this is an existential threat to not only our democracy but our species. The most powerful country in the world chooses autocracy and illiberalism? Actually, the 3 most powerful countries in the world. All 3 nuclear powers. With us facing a dire climate crisis? Unprecedented. I can't even wager a guess on how this gets sorted. I'm not sure anyone on the planet knows. Maybe it won't.
I have a friend whose always thought the world would end during his lifetime. I've always thought he was crazy because I had faith in society (). The worst part about the apocalypse (other than the cannibalism) will be having to tell him he was right.
The bright side is that you and/or him may be in the nuclear blast zone, so you may never have to actually tell him he was right.
I live in the D.C. metro area, I'm sure I'll be in the nuclear blasts zone, I feel sorry for those that survive the initial blasts.
i'll never forget the pride i felt on november 4, 2008. that was one of my favorite days in american history.
in my lifetime: november 4, 2008 and june 26, 2015, when the ban on same sex marriage was ruled unconstitutional.
I went to a gay bar that night with a few LGBT friends. Everyone was so happy. It was a great time Got toasted out my ass
Saw one of the couples and their attorneys speak before the Supreme Court heard their case. One of the plaintiffs was a professor in UT's veterinary program, and her now wife was a visiting professor from I want to say Colombia. If they didn't get that ruling, the visiting professor wouldn't have been able to stay in the country. She had lined up a job with UT to stay if they were allowed to marry and she got her citizenship. Luckily they did.
Not sure if this was ever posted in this thread or just the Hamilton one... but just go ahead and watch/cry.
I was just out on the bike riding around downtown (and then up to U St). There's tons of cops and concrete barriers and roads blocked off and whatnot, but things are pretty dead to be quite honest. Way less people out than usual on a Thursday night with decent weather. Just weird out.
got married the very next day, so we had the officiant squeeze in a comment about it the ohio portion of the in-laws were, unsurprisingly, not happy about that
It's talked about a lot in here how this presidency isn't normal and using that as a justification for certain action or inaction. But it needs to be remembered that 51.8% of the voting public doesn't see it that way. 70+ million people knew either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump would win the presidency and thought things were normal enough to not vote for her. People who thought things were normal enough to vote third party gave Trump winning margins in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. 43% of people registered to vote thought things were normal enough that they didn't bother voting at all. I say all that to say that I don't think the action/inaction taken to obstruct and delegitimize his presidency will be viewed as some clear "this isn't normal" situation the way it's talked about in here. I think it'll just be viewed as politics as usual, and I'm sure it'll be used as justification for even more significant action/inaction taken to obstruct and delegitimize future presidents.
I sincerely hope you aren't the weird Chinese guy or the white trash guy that live on either side of me.
my fraternity had gorilla zoe play our tailgate the saturday after obama got reelected. somehow me and my buddy were tabbed to control the music leading up to the show and we ended with this song there were a lot of angry white people that day JeremyLambsFace
I am really pleased at how seriously Al Franken takes his post. I was worried it was some Jesse Ventura insanity when he ran, but unless I'm missing something he is principled and dedicated to his job
One of the weirdest things about the right is how much it hates Pope Francis, Michelle Obama, and Beyoncé. I mean that alone should tell you you're gonna be on the wrong side of history.
you're correct. he didn't want to lose his followers. idk what's going to happen to that account though
