Defense and block weren’t there set 4 and 5. Beason not herself the last however many games when you needed her to be. Landfair…idk man.
Yeah, the defense is what lost them the match. I’m not enough of an expert to know if Penn State was just playing that well offensively or if Nebraska’s defense was playing poorly.
MBs insistence on going off speed literally every other swing was baffling. She flashed her best several times but never trusted it long enough to do damage
Sucks for volleyball. Even though it’s in Louisville, Neb-Pitt would have been higher attended and would have had 2 X’s the ratings. Whatever, pedo rape U with the ex groomer program builder vs a team no one cares about. Hooray.
edit misread Anywho really good season and a final 4. Sucks how it ended but always next year. Losing Lexi will hurt a ton but we’ll see if Mauch or Choboy can step up.
While I agree with this post wholeheartedly, it’s funny when like 2 posts before this you were hating on a woman.
that game took as long as it’s possible for a volleyball game to take so now I am tired and my wife is mad
Double? Probably not quite…the husk regional final had close to 300K more viewers than Louisville. The second match tonight set the Louisville volleyball record and they weren’t playing. Husk volleyball brings more eyes to the game than anyone else and it’s not close.
I think I fell asleep around 1230 and then our 5 year old climbed into bed after a bad dream at 1 am and my alarm for a normal day went off at 550. Too bad we couldn’t have not given them three of their last 4 on hitting errors in set three
Busboom vs Schumacher-Cawley is pretty cool. Very deserving coaches. Hopefully Louisville can give a good effort with the injury to DeBeer. They were able to finish off Pitt without her but a much different thing to that over a whole match.
I was impressed with Penn State's resilience and mental toughness. Usually when a team blows a big lead it's because they choked or melted down. I didn't feel that way about the Husks. Penn State just locked in and played extremely well. Huskers blew the game when they took their foot off the gas and got tentative in the middle of set 3
It’s a very hard shot to hit consistently and she does it effortlessly. Her, Franklin and Rubin are the only ones who do it consistently well. Hudson probably also should be mentioned as well. I thought the color commentator saying Nebraska should “just take it away lul” and block middle was irritating because then it puts Bergan one on one vs Mzurik going seam and cross which is just GG. You want to make anyone go thumb down because it’s way harder to hit accurately and way more likely to make errors on. Plus Harper could have taken a shorter drop to compensate for D as well. It was clearly on the scouting report, but Mzurik is just really hard to gameplan for Mzurik also tools the block better than any non-Franklin player in the country as well.
be glad the rally scoring system was implemented. having to side out would've dragged it out even more.
Probably a dumb question but something I’ve always wondered and Sam’s hot take yesterday brought it to mind again. How much of what we see on the court is called pre-serve and how much of it is on the fly? I assume it’s similar to basketball where it’s a bit of a mix but you’re probably the closest thing to giving me a right answer.
It depends if the first pass let's the offense be "in system". If yes then it's a play that they wanted to run before the serve. If no then it's a play that is up to the discretion of the setter or second contact person who gets it to whoever is ready and able to attack.
You’ll see the setter give hand signals to her hitters pre-serve. That tells them where she wants to put the ball. if the pass is good (in system) they have a #1 route based on what the scouting report says to do. For the Husks, this is often the slide to Andi most of the time when she’s on the floor or often the back row attack to Harper. With the latter, they’ll run Beason and Landfair on outside runs and sometimes send Becca on a fake slide to clear out blockers as much as possible. but to run that level of complexity, you have to have a great pass off the serve. more frequently the plan B is to send a high outside ball to the pins which is way easier to not mess up and let your OH (or less likely RS) swing away. Teams with weaker attacking middles tend to run more “shoots” aka aggressive, fast and lower sets to the pin when in system so your RS/OHs are harder to double block. So yeah, there’s a game plan of what they want to do each rotation, and in timeouts the assistants and HC talk about what’s working or what the other team is taking away, and tell the setter what to be calling/setting. but, if your passing sucks and you are out of system, you end up throwing a lot of high balls to your OH and getting low efficiency offense. Unless you have Olivia Babcock and you just set her 70 times a game no matter the situation and let her swing away because she’s a freak athlete.
The first part of your post is what’s always had me curious about this. I knew they’d give a signal pre-serve but with it all seemingly being so dependent on a good serve or first pass, I was curious how far that goes vs. the “Plan B” side that’s based more on your strengths and game plan for the opponent.
Yeah it sucked bad but the whole let's win for our coach battling breast cancer is pretty cool storyline really
Back line kills are just some of the best aggressive moves in sports. The shots of them from the floor with a player's whole momentum and every muscle group going into them are just majestic. I really like how artful and ruthlessly aggressive volleyball is.
the other aspect is during run of play, the hitters are calling out where they’re going. So middles will call out 3 or 1 depending on where they’re headed. Outsides will call what type of set they want etc. so yeah there’s the pre play call but they can adjust through the play
Iirc that’s actually more of a HS and club thing because at higher levels announcing where you are going leads to defense locking you down, at least from what I’ve been told. I haven’t coached or been affiliated with anything higher than varsity level.
It's also part of the play when someone jumps up and acts like they're going to hit and then doesn't, right? Or is that a little from column a, a little from column b where when it's not intentional they jump up thinking it's for them when it's not?
Has it been announced if Debeer is playing tomorrow? Her and Mzurik both deserve a natty in their careers. Hate Husk losing but there will be a great storyline either way, with either UL getting it done in their home city or PSU being able to win one for Schumacher-Cawley.
I have no inside info but you’d have to think the job is hers if she wants it. There are numerous very qualified former players/former assistants/current assistants.
