My wife and I’s first date was Rojo. Sitting outside is great if you can get a table.
What’s painful about fast casual Latin and Americana cuisine?
Best bleu cheese I’ve ever had.
assuming he's referring to the location and parking situation
Great compromise restaurant. Parking can be a pain, but a walk through the park(s) before and after can be nice.
Does anyone have insight into Local Taco and bartaco closing down? Was in town visiting some friends and they mentioned it. Both were packed the couple times I went.
Local Taco in Mtn Brook?
Just surprised me with how made-for-instragram they both seemed.
Yeah, I never made it to bar taco but I liked Local Taco
I always thought Bar Taco was a little too ambitious in choosing to set up shop directly across the street from Taco Mama.
the food sucked the one time I went to bartaco
Local Taco was mediocre at best and had consistently bad service.
My wife always wants to go to these “Mexican” restaurants (Taco Bar, Taco Mama, Little Donkey, etc) that ends up costing me $60+ for food i can get at the taco truck for a third of the price.
You're doing some fucking work if you pay $60+ at Taco Mama for two.
Generally have to park very far away. Standing in line blocking the door and the servers. If you live next door and walk I could see it being great, but I live 4 min away and have almost totally written it off.
Speaking of shitty service, the last 3 or 4 times we've been to Little Donkey we've sat around with our thumbs up our ass for 30 minutes before someone even stops by our table to get us drinks.
I long since wrote off La Paz and Taco Mama for date night and just do El Barrio. Food is a lot better than the price isn't much different. Taco Mama taco baskets for 2 and 2 margs each can be 50+.
Sounds like you're talking about my friend's wife, who clued me into the above closings. Couldn't stop laughing when I asked what was good at LD and she said the fried chicken.
Bartaco claims they are re-opening with a new location. I thought the drinks were expensive, parking was bad and location is bad if you don't live in edgewood. Place was overrun with kids. People from downtown/crestline aren't going there regularly. Seemed packed everytime I went though.
Local taco here just flat out sucked. The one's in Nashville were considerably better. They don't pretend to be upscale.
Their fried chicken is actually really good.
2 meals + 2 margaritas each plus tip has gotta be 60+
la paz is the most mtn brook shit ever
its food is exactly the same as like el cazador or los amigos but with jacked up prices because they know that unsuspecting brookies will pay for it
Meals are $10 a piece and a pitcher of margs is $20. It's also pay at the counter, so that's on you if you're tipping 20%.
You’re not wrong
What blows my mind is how many non brookies go to La Paz. A dude I work with who lives in Trussville goes there all the time. I get going there for convenience and because it's kid-friendly. But fuck driving there from anywhere.
Good to know. Was just so funny because we were talking specifically about getting Mexican food.
I go to El Caz at least once a week. Those 5 dollar 32oz drafts are awesome.
I do think some of the food at La Paz is better but overall La Paz isn't really worth going to.
yeah i haven't even been really since high school but i know that little has changed
While we have a stew going in here is anything worth a shit for NYE? I talked to Feizal at Atomic and they said they are out of the stupid bus thing along with the Collins and Carrigans, but I still feel like that whole scene will be a shitshow. They talked about $10 cover but if you have been to another one of the bars already its only 5.
Last year we did Iron City all you can eat/drink that was pretty good, though it looks like that isn't happening this year.
Iron City used to do a dueling piano's thing that was a lot of fun. We went to dinner somewhere beforehand and got a table with three other couples and had an awesome time. That was years ago, though. Now we typically go to a friend's house for dinner and then slide over to Otey's around 11.
La Paz coasts on their cheese dip (which truly is the best in Birmingham). The rest of the menu is very overpriced for what it is.
The one in Huntsville is trash.
Local Taco was amazing but the service sucked. I’m pretty bummed about them closing. I ate the hot chicken tacos weekly.
Bartaco is mediocre but women love going there for the aesthetic.
Love the La Paz takes.
And Rojo would be amazing if they actually waited tables. I always feel like a moron standing in that line while trying to dodge outgoing plates and not block the door. Also standing in line to grab another beer is such a buzzkill.
Skip the line and walk up to the bar. That being said, I’m with you on not being a fan of the “wait in line to order” type restaurants.
The boutique taco situation in Birmingham was hilariously over saturated. A little birdie told me bar taco was profitable but fell way short of their year production goal (which was apparently a little over ambitious) so the plug got pulled. Probably had something to do with setting up across the fucking street from an existing successful taco shop.
Pivoting. I found this story about the cut through Red Mountain on 31 really interesting. I’d love the new administration to get behind the attempts to restore the old trails.
Cantina in pepper place is sneaky delicious Mexican and the prickly pear marg is one of the best in bham. However, last time I ate there I nearly cracked a tooth on a calcified piece of something from their flattop that made it into my taco. The purpose of that lunch was closing a job offer with my current employer and would have been fucking disastrous. I think I would of just powered through, it scared the shit out of me.
Nice humble brag on being employed
And on having teeth.
bartaco not having cheese dip is the original sin for Mexican place.
The only time I went there our waitress walked across the street to Taco Mama to get us some. We Venmo'd her for it. That plus the $12 half a margarita meant it was never going to last there.
The field trip to Red Mountain Museum that included a walk along the cut trail was a peak moment of one two's dinosaur obsessed elementary aged existence.
the restaurant is aight but the food truck is waaaaay better imo
their cuban sandwich is incredible
Had the cuban taco for lunch, can confirm. Black bean was also swell.
Prater made The Daily Mail
Mark Prater, 49, was arrested at his home in Moody, Alabama, on Wednesday
A woman had filed a Protection From Abuse request against him claiming that he was threatening to take her daughter away from her
Prater allegedly called the woman 17 times and sent her 37 emails on Tuesday morning before showing up at her home - at which point she called the police
He spent 10 years as chief meteorologist for CBS 42 in Jefferson County before abruptly leaving the job in April
Guy sends a lot of emails
He deleted a lot of tweets after I e-cucked him.
U go girl
I'd like to come back and point out that another unacceptable sin for a Mexican restaurant is to charge for chips and salsa.
I don’t think El Zun Zun is gonna make it. Satterfield might keep dumping money in it to keep it alive for a while, but it doesn’t seem to be going well.
I’ve enjoyed it when I’ve gone (always at lunch), but I’ve heard others complain about it.
