It’s been a few years since law school, so there may be more nuance than this, but it seems he was convicted of “felony murder.” Felony murder is a crime that essentially permits a defendant to be tried for the murder caused by someone else in pursuance of a common felony. For example, if you rob a gas station with a buddy and he loses his temper and shoots the clerk, you can be tried for murder of the clerk. Only twice before in Alabama has a felony murder conviction resulted in a death sentence, I believe. This was the third. May be wrong, but that’s what seems to be the case based on news articles I’ve read today. I’ve also had the better half of a bottle of wine.

The felony murder rule is problematic because it does not require an intent to kill. It's been abolished in several states and virtually every other English Common Law jurisdiction.
