Yeah, I'll get that black eyed pea salad pretty regularly too. Place is underrated, they have a solid product.
I like wings plus three but never heard of this (also haven’t been there in awhile) As far as local fat ass meals Fried spicy chicken sandwiches are money from Eugenes and Saw’s Soul Kitchen has a p good one now wings from Moes Double cheeseburger from Milos Trash can with a lid from Salem’s also love the Bham special dog scene with Greek tasting meat sauce
oh and the colonel sandwich from saw's soul kitchen is one of the most underrated items in bham sweet tea fried chicken topped with pimento cheese. fucking magical.
I had their new sweet heat chicken sandwich last Saturday. Also worth a try. Spicy seasoned sweet tea chicken with slaw and ranch.
Do it. I’ll also say Saw’s Soulfood in Avondale is going the extra mile. They’ve got side window to pick up from. Owner himself was there Saturday working and they put on fresh latex gloves to hand you your order and wipe the pen down with disinfectant before handing to you to sign
Got Bamboo curbside Friday and they're also doing a hell of a job...sanitized pen, face masks, etc...
I like this support local momentum we’ve got going in here. Anyone picked up any cocktail packages they’d recommend? Also I know we are all trying to toe a fine line between helping local business and respecting shelter in place. If you can afford it and aren’t keen on getting out at least donate to or buy merch from your favorite spots. A lot of these places have links on their websites to help out. /end soapbox
Vulcan Roll New Moon Roll Nigiri Salmon Momos - turkey Tuna Tataki Bottle of Sauvignon Blanche Menu http://www.bambooon2nd.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Bamboo-Food-8-13-2019-email.pdf The spicy Miso bowl is fire too, but doesn't lend itself to curbside, so I didn't get it.
Lots of mexican places are doing gallons of Margarita. I have done some cocktail kits at Queens Park. Queens park will also sell you syrups, freshly squeezed lemon/lime juices so you don't necessarily need to buy a "kit" if you already have the liquor and some competency making drinks. You can order online, pay over the phone and pick up curbside. I have been buying beer from Cahaba with their online platform. Also have bushwackers always been 15 dollars? Saws food is cheap and I drink a lot there and never really look at prices. I have picked up bushwackers a few times and 4 (2 for me and 2 for my gf) I paid like 80 bucks after a nice tip. I like supporting the place but I was like oh fuck probably need to slow this train down.
I was ordering from somewhere a couple of weeks ago and was like “why the fuck is a side of fries $4” and then I remembered the virus
Miss the Terri Sewell donation in there? It looks like he’s donating to winners/incumbents, which is hardly rare.
Same with the Rotary Trail and keeping a shit ton of non-profits solvent. I'm admittedly biased because he was a friend of my father's, but that was a pretty hot take.
everyone donates to terri sewell. she represents the one gerrymandered district for dems, and if there's gonna be one, they're gonna be damn sure she's the most corporatist dem possible. fyi he's a "friend" of my father's as well.
The praise for these supposedly benevolent rich people in Alabama is one of our biggest issues. They’re happy to shell out money for initiatives that look nice in a newspaper clipping but the second you bring up that maybe more of their profits should go to public funds they balk. It’s a smaller scale version of lavishing praise on the Bezos of the world for shelling out a fraction of their private wealth for charity.
I know who Terri Sewell is and which district she's in. The point was that the list of donations you posted is very likely motivated by something other than ideology.
You can object all you want to, but I don't think it makes one a "right-wing dickhead," nor do I think it's feasible to live in a world where you avoid any person/entity that makes political donations to politicians and causes you oppose. Might as well smash your iphone and start walking your ass to work.
also just to humor this—Doug Jones is an incumbent who has certainly had zero impact on royal cup or back 40’s bottom line. If smith isn’t motivated by ideology, why did he nearly max out to the third place finisher in the republican primary? Wouldn’t Jones be the exact sort of politician that would be digestible to this non ideological guy?
i think the disclaimer I added to my post was pretty clear. and of local businesses, there are certainly ones with less baggage than that shit.
Smith was the fundraising chair for the Strange campaign. I personally cannot stand Luther Strange, but that role is obviously why he didn't donate to Jones. He did, however, support Jones over Roy Moore. Not that it took any kind of martyrdom to do that.
i don't really think our versions of a "right wing dickhead" align. i'm well aware that people like hatton smith. he's nice and quirky and yada yada. i find the way he wields his influence and (inherited) wealth to be pretty gross and a good indication of why alabama is so fucked up (but that's a longer discussion for another day). edit: and also, yeah, we all make concessions in our day to day life on what we allow in our consumer choices. do i think i'm making some brave stand? no. i will still go there occasionally with friends, but if i have full agency over it, i avoid the place.
I'm just saying, it doesn't receive the recognition it deserves and never gets much play on these types of Birmingham lists.
Random, but does anyone have a local source for Japanese gardening expertise? Specifically, Japanese maples. Probably going to consult the guys at Shoppe.

Caught the second half of that “True South” series on Espn. First episode was on Birmingham. Thought it was ok. Produced by John T. Edge and that non-Marty Smith southern guy that works for ESPN with an equally embellished accent whose name escapes me at the moment.
Got it tonight. Incredible. Living walking distance from Juke Joint I never go to the Avondale location.
I know what you were doing, and I couldn't disagree more. Call me biased, but I think the area around Fox Hall is a great place to raise a family. No recruiting necessary, imo.
