Heard a COVID story recently about kids going to summer camp at Camp Laney. Kids had to test negative three days prior to arrival and then test negative upon arrival as well. On Day 2 of camp they had 5 kids test positive and had to cancel the whole session and send everyone home. I imagine schools won't be much better.
I ran with Dr Mark Wilson this weekend. He’s the Health Officer for the Jefferson Co Dept of health. His outlook for the school year sounded bleak. Firmly believes this could’ve been averted, as well, had vaccination rates been higher.
It’s hard to say since the scarlet letter worn by the unvaccinated was hard to see on top of everyone’s tie dye shirts and patchwork pants, but my guess is that it was higher than the 40% vaccination rate around the state in general. Everyone I knew there was vaccinated
I’d take my chances without a mask at this past weekend’s phish shows before doing the same at a big box retailer in Hoover or Mobile (with similar density of people). I saw very few wooks in Pelham and Alpharetta. A few, but not many. There were 300 Ole Miss fans for every wook.
I trust the wooks more… You’re probably right, but I was pretty disappointed at the cheering at the “mask off” line in Sigma Oasis.
I have no idea, but Id imagine it was generally inline with whatever the Otey’s ratio is (at least in terms of my personal exposure). I saw a lot more middle-class, party-bus, weekend “hippies” than hardcore lifestyle wooks. There’s a low hanging LSD/doses vaccine joke in there somewhere…
Randall had a presser this morning and stressed getting the vaccine because “we may have to re implement masks” etc. I spoke with a Bham councilman (no not the Brookie) and they are hesitant to reinstate mask mandate if the State won’t do it. I have a hunch it’s bc the election is coming up and they are worried re implementing mask mandate might hurt some businesses. Regions bank is following UAB’s advice and re instating masks indoors it’s building for vaxxed and non vaxxed people, doubt it’s enforced though. TL;DR I don’t think you’ll see any city wide Covid policy changes until after the election
It also sucks for some hostess at East West to be the mask enforcer. Just wish people would get vaccinated.
sure someone itt may have more details but have seen/heard rumblings that highlands and the atomic are about to both be kaput the atomic one didn't surprise me cause i'd heard that the owners were getting divorced but didn't know anything about highlands
Thinking of coming out and playing the RTJ courses in October. Is there a good part of town to stay with walkable restaurants or should I just get as close to the courses as possible?
This is my opinion but the courses are about 15 minutes outside of town, you would have more fun staying closer to Bham and driving to the courses as opposed to staying right by the courses.
I agree, probably should take Covid into consideration when planning however there are some cool rentable houses out by the courses
True. Hotel wise we have a few nice ones downtown but if it is just golf with some guys the Fairfield Inn & Suites on 1st Ave. N. would be a good option that is walkable to bars/restaurants without breaking the bank.
Heard the Highlands rumor last fall and then was told that was bad info. Not sure if you’re hearing a continuation of that or it actually has legs.
If you want to stay close to the courses, I’d recommend staying at the Renaissance Ross Bridge for sure. Like Mal said, the courses are about 20-25min from downtown and all the restaurants and bars. If that drive isn’t a big deal, stay downtown. Valley Hotel (brand new) or ALoft in Homewood would be other good options.
Like everyone else said, if you are only interested in playing golf and don't mind eating at hotel restaurants, stay at the Renaissance Ross Bridge. If you want to enjoy Birmingham without being too far from the courses, stay downtown or in Homewood.
Pretty much just want to play golf and eat good food. Maybe doing take out if covid is a cluster. Don't mind staying in town and driving to courses.
Is the area where valley hotel is better than like around the barons stadium in terms of walkable restaurants? Are there breweries anywhere?
Probably better in terms of walkable restaurants. There’s are good breweries right next to the Baron’s stadium (Good People, Monday Night) and a good pizza joint right there too. There are some ok/good restaurants if you walk up railroad park which is adjacent to the Baron’s stadium. I would stay there over Homewood.
Breweries on the small X’s along with Tortugas pizza. More restaurants on the long X. And of course a walkable BDubs
You'll have The Grocery there for a brewery/bar and Little Donkey are both within walking distance. Plus that whole stretch of 18 St right there is a cute area. More family oriented/laid back though. Stay closer to Regions Field/downtown if you want a more lively experience. Like SCSA said, a few breweries within walking distance of each other. And tons of restaurants, pretty much anything you want. edit: stay downtown. Just looked at the map again. Good People, District, Monday Night, Paramount, Pilcrow, Essential, Collins, ZaZa, East West, and Neon Moon are all within a 20 minute walk of each other. If you hit half of those in a given weekend you'll have a great time.
I just figure breweries probably have some outdoor space and I'm less likely to get riddled with covid. Great chance I'll end up playing two rounds of golf each day, grabbing takeout from whatever the best restaurants are and watching college football in the hotel roomy.
